county shop misuse details emerge...

responding to rumors posted on this blog, county commission chairman jay matthews confirmed thursday that two veteran county employees have been disciplined.
“we handled it in-house. it is a county personnel matter,” the chairman said.
personnel matters are routinely handled confidentially by the county.
the discipline was meted out after a vehicle owned by a child of one employee was twice worked on at the county maintenance facility.
in the first instance, the vehicle was painted after normal working hours. the county employee involved bought all the paint and no county expense other than normal wear on equipment was incurred, matthews said.
in the second instance, the brakes on the vehicle failed and the child involved called the second employee who bought parts but repaired the vehicle on county time in the barn.
“both employees admitted their involvement. this may have happened in the past but it will not happen again. if it does, heads will roll and they are well aware of that,” matthews said.
both incidents occurred in 2007.

drug agents describe 'stop n cop' surveillance...

from the 2.20.07 print edition of the herald-gazette:

Task force officers describe
surveillance operation that took
down ‘stop and cop’ drug market
Agents with the Narcotics Task Force described last week the January 11 covert operation that took down a ‘stop and cop’ drug market in Barnesville, its alleged operators and several alleged customers.
One of the alleged customers arrested was Mary Fletcher, 27, of 126 Robinson Road. Fletcher is the reigning teacher of the year at Lamar County Middle School.
Fletcher quietly resigned her LCMS position last week.
Agents said they had received multiple complaints about three men openly selling drugs in the vicinity of 103 Kate Court. The officers involved asked their identities not be revealed due to the nature of their work.
“There was a lot of traffic in the area. It was obvious. We set up video surveillance and watched it. Then we would stop the cars as they left. We had our agents and Barnesville police working but we could not stop them all. Business was brisk,” one agent said.
The undercover officers alleged there were three men working the operation.
Tony Akins, 34, of 1321 McCollum Road was charged with sale of marijuana. Officers repeatedly have described Akins as a career criminal.
Mandrickas Buckner, 21, of 200 Southland Drive, Apt. H, was also charged with sale of marijuana.
The third alleged operator fled the scene but was later apprehended. Antonio Goddard, 22, of 339 Atlanta Street is a convicted felon. He was charged with violating his parole and his probation was revoked.
“We have him on video as one of the sellers,” the agents reported.
The alleged customers arrested were (in chronological order based on the time of arrest):
•Chase Ellington, 22, 582 Highway 18 West, Barnesville. Ellington was charged with possession of marijuana. He had five $10 bags of pot in his possession.
•Keith O’Bryan Kennedy, 50, Fullers Trailer Park. Kennedy was charged with possession of marijuana. He had four $10 bags of marijuana in his possession.
•Russell Collis, 31, 2729 Highway 109 West, Molena. Collis was charged with possession of marijuana. He had one $10 bag of pot in his possession.
Fletcher was the final arrest. She was driving a black Jeep and alone in the vehicle.
At that point, officers moved in on Akins, Buckner and Goddard.
“It was time. They were sold out,” the officers concluded.

this just in from the muslim american society

an example of the propaganda those of us here at your newspaper get from these folks:

Muslim Professor Al-Arian Continues Prison Hunger Strike, Supporters Hold Press Conference at Justice Department

Supporters Express Health Concerns and Launch 1 Day Solidarity Hunger Strike

WASHINGTON, DC - Feb. 19, 2007 (MASNET) Lawyers and supporters of Dr. Sami Al-Arian, academian and human rights activist, are holding a press conference on Wednesday, February 21st, 2007 at 11:00 am in front of the U.S. Department of Justice at 9th and Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, DC. Dr. Al-Arian is now on the twenty ninth day of a prison hunger strike, and despite serious health concerns have vowed to continue.

Dr. Sami Al-Arian embarked upon a hunger strike to protest his legal treatment, incarceration, and current eighteen month jail sentence for his refusal to testify testifying before a grand jury. This verdict was rendered against him despite a plea agreement he had with the government, which included a no-cooperation clause. (For more legal information about the case see: http://www.masnet.org/takeaction.asp?id=4010 )

The press conference is sponsored by the Muslim American Society (MAS) Freedom Foundation and includes Dr. Al-Arian's lawyer, Peter Erlinder, family members, religious leaders, human rights organizations, and other national Muslim organizations. The group has expressed serious concerns about Dr. Al-Arian's current health. Dr. Al-Arian, who is diabetic, collapsed while at the Northern Neck Regional County Jail in Virginia and has since been transferred to a prison medical facility in Butner, North Carolina.

Dr. Al-Arian's legal representatives have indicated that they are calling upon U.S Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to review the conduct of Assistant U.S. Attorney Gordon Kromberg. Attorneys for Dr. Al-Arian have indicated that Kromberg's subpoena of Dr. Al-Arian before the grand jury is a violation of a previous plea agreement. Additionally, in an affidavit filed by Attorney Jack Fernandez, it was indicated that Kromberg had expressed strong anti-Muslim bias and should recuse himself from the case.
