tarleton oaks has a new owner...

dolie mccarthy of smyrna purchased the inn/bed & breakfast on greenwood street for $439,000 at today's auction.

mccarthy is the retired former owner of a personnel agency in atlanta and invests in property.

mccarthy said she might establish a bed and breakfast of her own at the house. "i must do some serious thinking. i'm a little bit stunned. i'm surprised i got it for that price," mccarthy said.

she must pay a 10% buyer's premium and closing costs in addition to her winning bid.

the tarleton oaks auction drew a huge crowd with hundreds of visitors coming to barnesville from as far away as wisconsin and alaska. auctioneer larry troutman said over 1000 online bidders signed up for the sale of gone with the wind memorabilia owned by fred crane who played brent tarleton in the movie classic.

Hasnt been that many years ago, it sold for $50,000.

I might have considered paying that much for that house had it been on a nicer street.

nicer street??? you can put it on wheels and roll it to wherever you want it. im pretty much guessing youre used to houses on wheels

there is no way in hell i would pay out that much money and have all that junk around me...guess that comes from NOT living in a house with wheels

Tarleton Oaks?

It was someting else, like maybe the Lambdin House a few years back.
It'll always be an old house in barnesville to me.
Just 'cause somebody from atlanta bought it dont makit something it isn't.

They paid too much for it in 2000.
Now, just like P.T. Barnum said, 'there's been another one born!'
It's a mule in horse's harness, that's all.

I believe it was the Rose Inn a few years ago. Then that fluked. Barnesville doesn't seem like the place for a B&B, maybe because all of the attempts have been in the same place.

Welcome and good luck to the Lady.

Congratulation Mccarthy! You'll figure out what to do with your new investment. Best of Luck to you.

I don't believe I have ever met 2 people with a more inflated sense of importance than the Cranes. They have tried to make more hay off a 1-line bit part.

I wouldn't trust them any further than I could throw them. They were quoted in the AJC over the weekend as saying they had been offered $1.7 million for the house, even though they had it on the market for months at less than half that.

Then they start the bidding off at $1.0 million at the actual auction. It eventually sells for $439,000 and they claim they had an internet offer of $430,000. Yea, right.

The only reason they got Ms. McCarthy to pay so much is because they had planted false bidders in the crowd to run the price up.

As a previous blogger stated, they took full advantage of P.T Barnum's famous strategy "No one has ever gone broke underestimating the intellengce of people."

The price paid for the home seems fair to me. The structure is in fine shape and it has really nice grounds too. It is too bad that it isn't a little further away from that apartment complex. Greenwood Street is looking better.

she just bought something out of a George Straight song if you know what i mean. Bville needs some more people with more money thtn sense. helps fuel the economy.

I was raised on Greenwood Street. I feel that someone making a remark like that is insulting to the people of that street. Where this person gets their assumption, befuddles me. There are fine persons on that street, and cover largely the strata of Barnesville.

Anonymous at 7:53, I couldn't agree with you more.*lol* It's amazing how they're still trying to capitalize on a bit part in a movie.

I've also had the pleasure or should I say displeasure of meeting the Cranes.

anon 2:46,
Im not putting anyone down. I am simply saying that I would not pay even half that amount of money due to the property around that house. Just ride down the street and that is obvious to anyone. Some of the homes there are nice but..... The appt complex is especially attractive. Would you build a half million dollar home there if it were your money?

ahhhhh a fat blonde Scarlett O'hara
hmmmmmm

Anon 6:04 you definitely are putting the people of that street down. If I wanted that house, and the price was such, I would pay it. The esthetic value is what someone goes for on a house like that, which is pre War Between the States. Location is superflourious

I disagree with you I dont care how old the house is. It is not in a great location.

Anonymous said...

Dont think it will ever work as a B&B. And I would not have paid that for it either.

It has already out lasted your double wide.

maybe i live in the shack a few houses down

Would somebody please tell me what business of ours as to how much the home sold for or what it will be used for. Thank God there are some people that have money and want to spend it in our town. And I am truly sorry that the new owner may see these comments and judge us all as some very closed minded and disrespective people and not a one of us know her. I pray she does not judge us all by the few negative comments here. I for one say "Welcome".

How do you determine what a piece of property is worth? Answer, exactly what someone is willing to pay for it.

Anonymous said...

You are right about that. I hope she really enjoys it cause im sure she is stuck with it.

I just hope that she hasnt bit off more than she can chew. It is a wonderful old house with alot of history that should be preserved.

anon 6:04 and 12:25 could it be that you don't have that kind of money to spend on a home like that or even a shack as you put it? Envy and jealousy are two very unattractive traits!!

Anonymous said...

Wrong on both accounts! What kind of trait is stupidity?

I don't know who you people are or if you have ever been to or met the Cranes. They are nice people. He is so knowledgeable about the GWTW movie and gives a lot of information you wouldn't get from anywhere else. The house is beautiful and the memorabilia unforgettable. I stayed there and wouldn't have missed it.

What Mrs. McCarthy has done to the house is incredible. Beautiful inside and out. This house is a fantastic piece of Georgia history and deserves to be preserved for future generations to enjoy. Some of the catty comments on here just reminds me how many creeps there are in the world.

I was reading about the death of Fred Crane and looked up the Tarleton house. I thought it might be fun to visit Barnesville next time I am in Atlanta. After reading the responses to the purchase of the house, I think I will skip a Barnesville trip. What a nasty bunch of people you are! You don't know the new owner and are criticising everything about her including her weight! It all sounds like envy, jealousy and marrying your cousins once too often. There is no reason for anyone to visit such a hateful community.

As the previous poster noted , she read about the death of Mr. Crane and out of curiousity looked up the Tarleton house ! I myself did the same however my reasoning for doing so was more personal.
I was born, raised and educated in Barnesville, Ga. My mother still resides in the same home I was born in almost 59 years ago. I have lived in Texas for the past 25 years, but GA will always be home ! Like the earlier poster , I also was very disappointed in the responses . I can see how someone would conclude that Barnesville would not be a very nice place to visit based on the comments posted by the majority ! That is why I am taking the time to let all who reads this "blog" know that unfortunately these individuals are not representative of Barnesville . It sadden me to think the place I consider home was being so rudely represented . I for one am proud that a place such as Tarleton house , with all it's historical memories and value , still stands on Greenwood Street . You cannot place a dollar value on something of this nature . Good luck , Ms. McCarthy with your new venture - it may be just an old house to some however to many it is much more ! God Bless !!

I just want to thank you all who offered the kind and un-tainted comments here, those who have perceived that there are a few comments that are 'sour grapes'. What's going on is that there is one person with too much time on his hands and a bit of a grudge, who goes around the internet making snide and undeserved comments with reference to these people. This person previously utilized Mr. Crane to acquire artifacts and procure networking opportunities through him, and Mr. Crane was helpful and obliging. When he remarried, his wife was not as receptive to the assumptive exploits of this particular over-imposing fan. Since that time, he has been making cruel and undeserved comments on the internet, mostly on eBay when he lists the items he has attained related to the GWTW film. That is the basic explanation of those few peculiar snipes at the Cranes and Tarleton Oaks. Nearly everyone who has stayed with them and spent time with them have very kind words and memories of their generosity, as the majority of internet comments attest. The hope is that this particular fan will bury the hatchet and eventually remember the good times and all the benefits from knowing them, and respect the memory, someday. Thank you all for your understanding and kindness.
