is litter a problem in your area...

if so, commissioner george brown suggests you call the sheriff's department to direct inmate labor to your problem area. call captain chris webster directly at 770.358.5151.

what do you consider to be the most littered areas of the community?

what can be done to halt it?

as an aside, the commission discussed the recently reconstituted clean community commisison. one of those appointed by the county to the CCC said the group is dead in the water and has never met. is the CCC a waste of time and effort? is litter an unconquerable problem?

discuss...

Litter, in my opinion, is a problem on almost every road in the county. All you have to do is ride and look. The number of plastic soft drink and water bottles is enormous. The plastic is not biodegradeable in our lifetimes, so it is an on going problem for even the next generation. Why cannot someone clean it up?

stop looking for someone else to solve the problem, change starts with you

Litter thrown out of a car window is very hard to police and people will probably never be convinced to put it where it belongs but keeping a clean yard is another matter. Ride down Church Street and look at one yard in particular. There are proud families in the neighborhood that work hard to keep their yards clean and safe and then there are some who need to be cited for endangerment. There is one resident who could fill up 10 dumpsters with what is in his front yard. It is unbelievable.

If you will recall, when Joe Buice was elected sheriff he pledged to prosecute litter bugs. However,he obviously did not come through with that pledge. Don't bother to call Captain Webster because he does not have adequate personnel to oversee the cleanup detail. Bottom line...if you want it picked up you will have to pick it up yourself or wait until hell freezes over.

Buice didn't do anything about littering after 20+ years as a game warden don't expect him to do it now.Littering and illegal dumping are part of enviromental issues that d n r investigates as well not just game and fish laws.

1:13PM I pick up all around when I live, and I live in the country not in town. Lizards like you are probably the ones who are throwing out the plastic bottles.

you have to agree with 1:13 PM, change does start with each and every one of us,just who do you think should clean it up?a statement like that sounds like a transplant yankee to me

All the damn inmates should clean it up. They are sitting in jail using our tax dollars for 3 hotts and a cot. Why not let them do work details? They can get their exercise that way.

Two of the worst eyesores are right in the center of the City of Barnesville. New to Barnesville, I decided to pay my utility bill by driving up to the window at City Hall. Right there next to City Hall is a gargantuan pile of trash\scrap which appears to belong to Balamo's Hardware. What a site? One would think those of all citizens should lead by example. Another unattractive site is that car place across from Giant Mart. It is disgusting! How and why are they allowed to disgrace such an otherwise beautiful historic city?

its barnesville thats why , look who is in charge of the local goverment

Local government's responsibility is to represent its' citizens; therefore, they are not a representative government or the citizens are uninterested and don't care enough to voice their opinions about cleaning up their community.
What could be other reasons why these two businesses do not clean up their property?

You want ugly and unkept? How about the homes on Zebulon St. on the opposite side of the street from the Baptist Church. They are unsitely and probably harbor rats, etc. They could not be up to any code..both are in various stages of 'construction' which has been underway for many years.

Litter is a big problem and I know that the sheriff should not have to police it. People should show some respect for other peoples property and stop riding down the road throwing out trash I really wish that there was a way we could make the sorry so and so's who throw out their trash get out and pick it up I also live in the country and keep my yard litter free. just ask the people who visit me if they can throw out a cigarette butt. Why should anyone feel it is their priviledge throw trash out for someone else to have to clean up. Start having some respect for your fellow man.

Amen, on the comment about the dump and oil pit at Lamar Auto. Clean that crap up and make a place to store your junk behind your building. Just a concerned citizen.

I feel the penalty for littering should be a fine and automatically 10 hours of community service, picking up litter only.

What about a petition asking the city to enforce a clean up code for Balamo and Lamar Tire? What is an alternative solution?
