trojans win at soggy summers field...

19-14 over meadow creek.

lamar, deciding not to just kneel with the ball, fumbled or bobbled the ball on three of its last five and five of its last nine snaps deep in meadow creek territory to give the mustangs new life. the official timer, who failed to start the clock at halftime, made the same mistake twice in the final minute of the game.

the trojans sealed the win with an interception in their own endzone as time expired.

pigskin prognostications return...

now in a format where you can join in the fun.

here we go.

lsu@mississippi state: this is tonight's tv game and many believe it is les miles' first win on the way to the sec championship and national title game. the bayou bengals are ranked #2 but they lost all-world qb jamarcus russell to the nfl. lsu will win this one but the other bulldogs and their fans will be fired up with the espn crew in starkville. of course, anything bigger than a four-car funeral fires up starkville. my jury is still out on miles. lsu 37 mississippi state 27.

ole miss@memphis: ole miss just earned a top 10 party school ranking but the football there hath sucketh since archie manning left town. the rebels are just 2.5 point faves on the road. memphis has talent and puts it together in this one. memphis 21 ole miss 20.

troy@arkansas: the former troy state goes to arkansas where quarterback controversies abound and stud wideout marcus monk is hurt. however, houston nutt has darren mcfadden and even i could hand off to him. arkansas 61 troy 6.

marshall@miami: randy shannon will try to restore the fire in the hurricanes - a daunting task in a town where support for his team is tepid at best. miami will struggle again this year. miami used to win with speed and attitude. everybody has that now. miami 31 marshall 18.

louisiana-lafayette@south carolina: steve spurrier suspended quarterback blake mitchell for this game. some punishment, huh. some think spurrier can win the sec east. not me! still, lafayette gets the guillotine. south carolina 77 little league 3.

wake forest@boston college: reigning acc champs are 6.5 point underdogs on the road at bc. methinks the wake will be better this year than last plus i owe them for spanking tech in the acc title game. wake forest 24 boston college 23.

kansas state@auburn: the wareagletigerplainsmen have upgraded their season opener from hurricane katrina leftover high in new orleans to kansas state. k-state hangs its hat on the fact it beat nebraska last year in lincoln. they will hang with auburn for a half before they hang their heads. auburn 41 kansas state 27.

tennessee@california: credit to the vols for avoiding the opening day creampuff. shame phil fulmer is not so diligent at dunkin donuts. phil will need some comfort twinkies after going all the way to california to get his top rocked. california 35 tennessee 29.

georgia tech@notre dame: one of the more intriguing matchups of opening weekend. charlie weis, who never met a buffet he backed away from, runs his mouth, plays mind games with his players and fans and has yet to win a big game. chan gailey is, well, the man who started the fatally flawed reggie ball for four years. calvin johnson is gone and touchdown jesus is still hanging. notre dame 27 georgia tech 24.

oklahoma state@georgia: the cowboys bill theirs as the world's most powerful offense after averaging over 200 yards on the ground and in the air last season. they will spread the field and throw the ball all over the place. they will complete some. the dawgs will pick four. matthew stafford serves heisman notice and knowshon moreno scores twice. georgia 51 oklahoma state 20.

fayette to get major chinese industry...

from the fayette citizen:

A "major Chinese company" may well be coming to Fayette County, judging by an invitation extended to The Citizen Wednesday afternoon by the Fayette County Development Authority and two other regional development organizations.

The invitation does not name the company nor how many jobs it is expected to add to the economy, but a formal announcement on the matter will be made by Gov. Sonny Perdue Sept. 12 at the Georgia Capitol.

According to the invitation the company will be making "a large investment in Georgia."

Local development officials are remaining tight-lipped on any details related to the project.

No other details on the pending announcement are available, but one could surmise the business will provide a significant amount of jobs given the Governor's involvement in the matter and that of the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.

richard jewell dead at 43...

Former security guard Richard Jewell, who was erroneously linked to the 1996 Olympic bombing in Atlanta, died Wednesday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. He was 44.

Jewell was found dead in his west Georgia home, GBI spokesman John Bankhead said.

He died of natural causes, said Meriwether County Coroner Johnny Worley.

"There's no suspicion whatsoever of any type of foul play. He had been at home sick since the end of February with kidney problems," Worley said.

The GBI planned to do an autopsy Thursday, Bankhead said.

per reader request...the sad state of sorriness

from the 8.14.07 print edition of the herald-gazette:

the imagery is from talented cartoonist ric leonard who formerly lived here on greenwood street.

By Walter Geiger
How sorry can you get?
That’s the question I asked myself after stumbling over testimony in what I found to be a disturbing case in court recently. I was there to report on another matter but this one reared its ugly head.
A father and son - Senior and Junior - were in court on a theft case - a petty theft unless, of course, the stolen goods belonged to you.
It seems Senior and Junior had pulled well off a state highway to relieve themselves near a shed on private property adjacent to a commercial venture that is active primarily on weekends. The theft occurred during the week.
While near the shed, Senior and Junior stole some items they said they thought had been “abandoned” and loaded them into their van for resale. Well, the plans for resale went awry, somebody spilt the beans and Senior and Junior ended up in the crossbar motel.
From the testimony, I knew the exact location of the shed. The property has not been abandoned. Additionally, Senior and Junior were within two miles of two separate convenience stores with restroom facilities, casting further doubt upon their account of events.
Senior and Junior were in court to plead guilty, take their punishment and get on with their lives.
Senior, pushing 50, told the judge he was disabled in an automobile accident as a teenager and has not worked since. He draws supplemental income from Social Security.
This testimony raised the hackles on my back.
This man was well over six feet tall and, perhaps, a stolen ham biscuit shy of 275 pounds. He did not appear disabled in any way.
He and Junior had loaded some relatively large items from the shed into their van without any apparent problem. The scam alert and sorriness warning devices in my head began sounding the alarm.
Is this, I asked myself, what Social Security is supposed to be about? I was convinced the man was no more disabled than myself and had been running a game on the taxpayers for at least 30 years.
Do the people at the Social Security Administration even bother to verify such claims or do they just hand out the money of those of us who work and pay into the system without regard for the truth or giving a damn?
I sized Senior up as one sorry SOB of a Dad engaged in leading his son down the same path to sorriness. From the looks of him, Junior was taking well to his birthright.
We see sorriness around us every day. We see so much of it, we have grown to expect it - become immune to it.
People fake disabilities all the time. They brag about “getting a check” and others look up to them for it. Our government promotes sorriness with countless entitlement programs we are told are necessary but are not.
We, as a society, lack the intestinal fortitude to stand up, shout ‘enough is enough’ and demand people make at least some semblance of an effort to support themselves before the government opens our wallets against our wills and supports them with our hard earned money.
These things ran through my head in the courtroom. My blood boiled.
Fearing a contempt of court charge, I did not stand in the courtroom to protest.
I regret that now.
Sorry Senior and equally sorry Junior left the courtroom with a slap on the wrist.
They’re probably under a shade tree right now, beating the heat with a cold one purchased in part with my money and yours while planning their next heist.
I count myself among those to blame for their sad state of sorriness!

virginia tech insults its students....

from the augusta (ga.) chronicle:

"Shoot 'em up. Just shoot 'em up. Kill, kill, kill, murder, murder, murder. Shoot 'em up! Just shoot 'em up! What? Kill! Kill! Kill! Murder, murder, murder. Got yourself a gun. Yo I'm livin' in this time behind enemy lines. So I got mine. I hope you got yourself a gun!"

- Rapper Nasir Jones, a.k.a. "Nas"

This is a guy whom Virginia Tech has invited to perform at a Sept. 6 "healing" concert - to help take some of the sting out of the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Not surprisingly, a lot of folks don't think it's a stellar choice. Count us among them.

"Songs that glorify murder do not belong at a concert for the friends and families of murder victims," editorialized the Virginia Tech student newspaper. "Not only was this decision inappropriate in the first place, it is disturbing that the university has not yet removed him from the concert even after a victim's family member has openly condemned the decision."

Adds Chuck Griffin of the University of Georgia Red & Black student newspaper, "anyone with a rap sheet like Nas has no place taking the stage at Virginia Tech, despite the good intentions he may have."

Indeed, family members from over half a dozen of the 32 victims of the April shooting have complained bitterly about the inclusion of a rapper featuring such violent lyrics being included in the free concert.

As of this writing, the university stubbornly stood by the outrage, adding significant insult to inestimable injury.

Vincent J. Bove, a spokesman for seven of the victims' families, called Nas' lyrics "indicative of the moral decay in our society that contributes to acts of violence. For a university official to condone it or to be clueless of what this person's track record is, it's unconscionable beyond belief."

Alicia Farrell, a sister of one of the victims, according to the Washington Post, "said she believes there is a time and place for such music - but not at a concert meant to commemorate the victims and comfort the survivors of the worst shooting in U.S. history."

We agree with the last part, but not the former.

If there's a time and a place for lyrics glorifying murder, we'd like to know when and where that is.

this could get interesting: peta vs. the naacp...

letter to the editor received today...

Dear Editor,

In its rush to defend Michael Vick, the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP has done the unthinkable: It has insinuated that forcing dogs to fight to the death and electrocuting those who don’t “perform well” is acceptable behavior. In no state in the country is that the case.

Atlanta NAACP President R.L. White implies that people who chain dogs to buried car axles and repeatedly subject them to appalling torture and abuse should get a pass because, he says, hunting is acceptable. I can assure Mr. White that hunting animals for fun is not acceptable to a lot of people. Less than 5 percent of the American population hunts, and many people believe that shooting animals with guns or, worse, crossbows is a cruel and cowardly pastime.

Using one form of cruelty and subjugation to defend another has been done for centuries, but it has never been right. Just because some atrocities continue unabated doesn’t mean that others should not be stopped or that the perpetrators shouldn’t be punished. It is disheartening to think that an organization dedicated to defending the rights of the oppressed would even dream of siding with the oppressor.

truth is stranger than fiction....

to quote television evangelist earnest ainsley, "send me $20, put your head up close to the tv screen and i will heal you".

from the new york times...

Juanita Bynum, a televangelist who has won a national following with sermons about women's empowerment, was badly bruised in a fight with her estranged husband as they met in an attempt to reconcile, police said.
No charges were filed in connection with the confrontation between Bynum and preacher Thomas W. Weeks III, founder of Global Destiny churches, police said Thursday.
The fight happened early Wednesday in the parking lot of the Renaissance Concourse Hotel near Atlanta's airport, and a hotel bellman pulled Weeks off Bynum, Officer Ronald Campbell said.
''She was bruised up and battered,'' Campbell told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. ''She had purple bruising around her neck and upper torso.''
Weeks did not return a phone message or an email request for comment Thursday by The Associated Press. A call to Global Destiny was answered only by a recorded message with information about the ministry.
Campbell told the AP on Thursday he was unsure if investigators had spoken with Weeks.
Asked about the fight, a woman who answered the phone at Juanita Bynum Ministries in Waycross said, ''We're not at liberty to discuss it at this time.'' She did not identify herself.
Bynum is a former homemaker, hairdresser and flight attendant who became a Pentecostal evangelist. She got a break when Bishop T.D. Jakes invited her to speak at one of his conferences several years ago.
Her ministry blossomed after her ''No More Sheets'' sermon about breaking free of sexual promiscuity at a singles event. She writes books, records inspirational CDs and preaches to millions through televised sermons.
She married Weeks in 2002 in a televised wedding.

a good read - particularly for some of you...

this letter was in today's macon telegraph:

I have spent most of my adult life trying to find ways to build bridges and confront my own prejudice, as well as pursuing paths that could help me to find healing from the wounds caused by racism. It has not been an easy road, but it has been a good one and it has led me to this place today.

This is a place that allows me to speak about some of the issues facing us in this country regarding race and to try to help others to have hope about overcoming their racial woundedness.

Also, I have been thinking about the terminology that we have used for so long regarding the effort to build racial bridges. I have come to realize that "racial reconciliation" implies there was a previous relationship that has been breached in some way, but the truth of the matter is, that is not true. There was no authentic relationship between blacks and whites in this country and in too many instances, there are not any authentic ones now.

I think that this is true, because I see how difficult it is for the average white person to relate to the average black person as one human relating to another. I find that most interactions are limited to interrogations designed to determine if the person standing in front of the interrogator is really worthy of recognition. So I think we need some new ways to talk about what we are trying to achieve and that a place to start is with "acknowledgement."

Whites in America need to work on learning to see a black person as a worthy human being regardless of their achievements, and to decide that an interaction with that person can occur; because as one human being to another, a connection can be made.

Blacks need to do the same thing and to learn to expect to be acknowledged as a human being and to learn to be careful not to fall into the role of answering questions and explaining enough to become worthy of acceptance.

Thus, my intention is to work toward making sure that there is "racial acknowledgement," instead of racial reconciliation, because when that occurs, the chance to form a genuine relationship can occur as well.

Our ability to replace the racial monologue in this community with a racial dialogue, depends upon all of us being willing to take a deep breath, and to accept where we are at the present time. Then we need to make a conscious decision to make the necessary changes.

In order to do this, we all need to look at who sits in our living rooms with us, because true acknowledgement and dialogue are likely to change who is in the living room of a lot of our houses.

It is clear that this is a change that needs to happen if there is ever going to be substantial and sustainable systemic change in our community and in our country.

gordon shooting editorial...

from 8.21.07 print edition of the herald-gazette:

Law enforcement,
judicial systems should
deal harshly with GC gunmen
An otherwise promising fall semester at Gordon College got off to an inauspicious start last week when shots were fired in a dormitory parking lot and through a housing unit common area.
Fortunately, no one was hit by any of the multiple bullets but we could very easily be writing this week of multiple dead students, staff and bystanders. This incident apparently stemmed from an earlier shooting at a party at a home on Greenwood Street in Barnesville where multiple shots were also fired.
From all indications, this was local thugs shooting at a student or students. Reports that the intended victim did not cooperate, at least initially, with authorities cast aspersions on his or her character as well.
Now six suspects are in jail for questioning in this matter. Once the factual wheat is separated from the evidentiary chaff, our law enforcement and judicial systems should deal with them harshly.
Frankly, we don’t want to hear anything like ‘he was in the wrong place at the wrong time’ coming from anyone’s mouth in connection with this attempted murder - and that is precisely what it is.
Charges should be the harshest possible. Bonds should be set only at the maximum level allowed by law. Ideally, these people with a wanton disregard for human life will stay in jail until trial and in prison until old age or longer following their days in court.
This is an opportunity for some folks right here in Barnesville-Lamar County, Georgia to set an example by getting tough on crime.
Let’s see if they do it or if they roll over!

snake nightmares for me tonight...

after reading this from associated press:

PROSSER, Wash. — Turns out, even beheaded rattlesnakes can be dangerous. That's what 53-year-old Danny Anderson learned as he was feeding his horses Monday night, when a 5-foot rattler slithered onto his central Washington property, about 50 miles southeast of Yakima.

Anderson and his 27-year-old son, Benjamin, pinned the snake with an irrigation pipe and cut off its head with a shovel. A few more strikes to the head left it sitting under a pickup truck.

"When I reached down to pick up the head, it raised around and did a backflip almost, and bit my finger," Anderson said. "I had to shake my hand real hard to get it to let loose."

His wife insisted they go to the hospital, and by the time they arrived at Prosser Memorial Hospital 10 minutes later, Anderson's tongue was swollen and the venom was spreading. He then was taken by ambulance 30 miles to a Richland hospital to get the full series of six shots he needed.

The snake head ended up in the bed of his pickup, and Anderson landed in the hospital until Wednesday afternoon.

Mike Livingston, a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist, said the area where the Anderson's live is near prime snake habitat. But he said he had never heard of anyone being bit by a decapitated snake before.

"That's really surprising but that's an important thing to tell people," he said. "It may have been just a reflex on the part of the snake."

If another rattlesnake comes along, Anderson said he'll likely try to kill it again, but said he'll grab a shovel and bury it right there.

"It still gives me the creeps to think that son-of-a-gun could do that," he said.

bustin' slack/sagging will be outlawed in forsyth...

if julius stroud has his way...

from the macon telegraph:

If a Forsyth man has his way, those who don't keep their pants pulled up to their waists could risk more than tripping over their trousers.
If they are sagging in Forsyth or Monroe County, he thinks they should receive a citation or fine.

Julius Stroud, retired from the military and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Tuesday night asked the Monroe County Commission to adopt or amend an indecent exposure ordinance to make it illegal for people to wear sagging pants.

"When I see these young men with their pants down on their hips or lower with their boxer shorts showing, or sometimes the tops of their butts, I tell them to pull them up," he said. "Most of them do. I've done it enough, they see me coming, they pull them up. But some don't. They just look at you.

"What they don't understand is it isn't just a fashion. They go to apply for a job, nobody's going to hire them dressed like that. They need to learn to respect themselves and others by dressing properly. If we enforce this ordinance, we'll be helping them."

Stroud said he has long wished there was a way to make young men wear their pants at their waists. He said the idea of an ordinance came from an article he read in Jet Magazine that described a similar ordinance being enacted by Delcambre, La.

"It has fines up to $500. That may be too much, since it is mostly boys and young men who wear the sagging pants," Stroud said. "Maybe you could give them community service or something. Make them understand they should take pride in their appearance."

Stroud brought the same issue before the Forsyth City Council last month, asking it to adopt an ordinance to outlaw sagging pants. The council referred the request to its ordinance committee.

Councilman Hal Clarke said the committee will discuss the issue at its meeting this morning. He said rather than adopting a new ordinance it may consider amending its current ordinance on indecent exposure to include language addressing sagging pants.

"The problem would be in enforcement. I don't think how people wear their pants is something we want to be dictating, unless they are exposing their naked behinds," Clarke said.

The county commissioners also had reservations about enacting and enforcing such an ordinance, though most agreed with Stroud that they wished young men would keep their pants pulled up.

"A little bit (of a sag) might not be so bad, but when you are standing in line at the store and the guy in front of you reaches down to his ankle for his wallet, that's too much," said Commissioner Jim Peters.

Commissioner Larry Evans said he was afraid the county could face lawsuits if it tried to enforce such an ordinance.

"It would be up to the interpretation of the law enforcement officials if the pants were too low or too much of their behinds showed," Evans said. "We could be sued and have to go all the way to the Supreme Court to decide something like that. We can't afford fighting cases like that."

In the end, the commission referred the question to county attorney Mike Dillon to research if sagging pants would be included in the county's existing ordinance outlawing indecent exposure, and whether such an effort could be enforced.

Commissioner Jim Ham had the last say.

"Would this also cover plumbers?"

forgotten cops?....

from this week's print edition...

Calling themselves ‘forgotten cops’, a group of correctional officers from various Georgia Department of Corrections facilities are seeking pay increases.
The group has written letters to Gov. Sonny Perdue and various media outlets regarding their plight.
The letters include a petition purportedly signed by dozens of corrections officers, including some who live in Barnesville-Lamar County and work at the Lamar Pre-Release Center off Gordon Road.
The petition alleges officers at one Georgia prison facility staged a sit down strike and were immediately granted a 20% pay increase. The group argues that pay increase should be extended to officers in all the state’s correctional facilities.
The officers seeking change note they keep prisoners year round without benefit of weapons or protective gear but earn far less than state patrolmen, municipal police officers and county deputies.

vick dog chews...from the ajc

Hey dog lovers, chew on this.

The latest creative entrepreneur trying to capitalize upon Michael Vick's legal woes is selling — that's right —, Michael Vick chew toys for dogs. Get it?
We weren't able to reach anyone from the corporate headquarters of www.vickdogchewtoy.com, which is apparently a Jacksonville, Fla.-based enterprise. But the creative minds behind the merchandise are clearly troubled by Vick's alleged involvement in dogfighting, as evidenced by the polemic on the Web site.

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc., urges Congress to reject
Southwick nomination to U.S. Court of Appeals
“It would be unconscionable for Congress to confirm Leslie Southwick to a lifetime seat on the federal bench.”
                          — Matt Foreman, Executive Director, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc.WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 — The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc., is urging the United States Senate to reject the nomination of Leslie Southwick to a lifetime seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. The Senate Judiciary Committee last week voted 10–9 to send the nomination to the full Senate for consideration, which it is expected to do following the August recess.
In 2001, Southwick joined an egregious concurrence in a custody case that asserts that sexual orientation is a choice and an individual who makes that choice must accept the negative consequences, including loss of custody of an individual’s biological child.

Statement by Matt Foreman, Executive Director
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc.
“It would be unconscionable for Congress to confirm Leslie Southwick to a lifetime seat on the federal bench. That fact that this nomination has gotten this far is an outrage, given Southwick’s highly troubling civil rights record.
“On Thursday, Senator Dianne Feinstein joined Republicans on the committee to send the nomination to the floor. Congressional Republicans have recently asserted that all controversial matters should require 60 votes. This nomination clearly constitutes such a controversy. A nominee to the federal bench bears the burden of demonstrating a commitment to rigorously enforce the principles of equal protection and due process for all Americans. Southwick’s judicial record makes clear that he cannot meet that burden. It also makes clear that the individual and equal protection rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families would be in real jeopardy if he is confirmed.

“As this nomination moves to the full Senate, we urge all members to vote 'no.'"

congressional blowup over illegal immigration vote...

from 'the politico' blog....

By The Politico's Patrick O'Connor
Note: This item originally appeared on The Crypt, Politico's behind-the-scenes blog about Congress.

In a massive flare-up of partisan tensions, Republicans walked out on a House vote late Thursday night to protest what they believed to be Democratic maneuvers to reverse an unfavorable outcome for them.

The flap represents a complete breakdown in parliamentary procedure and an unprecedented low for the sometimes bitterly divided chamber.

The rancor erupted shortly before 11 p.m. as Rep. Michael R. McNulty, D-N.Y., gaveled close the vote on a standard procedural measure with the outcome still in doubt.

Details remain fuzzy, but numerous Republicans argued afterward that they had secured a 215-213 win on their motion to bar undocumented immigrants from receiving any federal funds apportioned in the agricultural spending bill for employment or rental assistance. Democrats, however, argued the measure was deadlocked at 214-214 and failed, members and aides on both sides of the aisle said afterward.

One GOP aide saw McNulty gavel the vote to a close after receiving a signal from his leaders – but before reading the official tally. And votes continued to shift even after he closed the roll call - a strange development in itself.

Whatever the final tally, acrimony quickly exploded between lawmakers on either side of the aisle as Democratic leaders tried to plot a solution, while parliamentarians on either side argued over protocol.

Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, D-Md., eventually offered a motion to reconsider, according to floor staff on either side, ostensibly giving members a chance to recast their votes. But the maneuver sparked a chorus of angry protests from the Republicans, yelling “shame” on Democrats, while they returned fire with angry volleys of their own.

When Democrats finally moved to consider the spending bill as the last vote of the night, furious Republicans left the chamber en masse to protest the maneuver. The House eventually recessed at 11:18 p.m. But Republicans quickly discovered that there was no longer any record of the controversial vote and immediately charged Democrats with erasing the bad result.

“Obviously, the Democrats don’t want to stand up against illegal immigration – so much so that they’re willing to cheat in order to win a vote,” Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., said in an e-mail. “They’re desperate – and it shows.”

The official House website did not show a record of the vote as of 1 a.m. Friday.

a gem from our friend/colleague jim wooten...

in his ajc column today:

• No greater mistake could the state make with the HOPE stipend than to lower academic standards because about 18,000 fewer students met somewhat higher eligibility standards this year. When dolts get academic “scholarships” while requiring remedial instruction in college, the program’s a joke. Standards, in fact, should be raised so that even fewer students qualify. Nobody’s son misses out because of HOPE’s grading change. They miss out because they don’t study.

are you pleased or displeased with the tightening of standards for hope recipients?

is hope a scholarship program or an entitlement program?
