National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc., urges Congress to reject
Southwick nomination to U.S. Court of Appeals
“It would be unconscionable for Congress to confirm Leslie Southwick to a lifetime seat on the federal bench.”
                          — Matt Foreman, Executive Director, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc.WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 — The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc., is urging the United States Senate to reject the nomination of Leslie Southwick to a lifetime seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. The Senate Judiciary Committee last week voted 10–9 to send the nomination to the full Senate for consideration, which it is expected to do following the August recess.
In 2001, Southwick joined an egregious concurrence in a custody case that asserts that sexual orientation is a choice and an individual who makes that choice must accept the negative consequences, including loss of custody of an individual’s biological child.

Statement by Matt Foreman, Executive Director
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc.
“It would be unconscionable for Congress to confirm Leslie Southwick to a lifetime seat on the federal bench. That fact that this nomination has gotten this far is an outrage, given Southwick’s highly troubling civil rights record.
“On Thursday, Senator Dianne Feinstein joined Republicans on the committee to send the nomination to the floor. Congressional Republicans have recently asserted that all controversial matters should require 60 votes. This nomination clearly constitutes such a controversy. A nominee to the federal bench bears the burden of demonstrating a commitment to rigorously enforce the principles of equal protection and due process for all Americans. Southwick’s judicial record makes clear that he cannot meet that burden. It also makes clear that the individual and equal protection rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families would be in real jeopardy if he is confirmed.

“As this nomination moves to the full Senate, we urge all members to vote 'no.'"

when are we going to start judging people by the contents of their hearts and not by the color of their skin, or who they sleep with.....when will this county and country start living in the 2000's and not the l910's

Hello anon 6:17 PM,

Would you judge a person if:

1) he or she sleeps with his or her brother or sister? (consenting adults here)

2) he or she sleeps with his or her mom or dad. (consenting adults here too.)

3) he or she sleeps with minor children?

4) he or she sleeps with members of another species? (adult with consenting or not consenting property.)

The bottom line is, we're being told that we have to accept something that is unacceptable. Sure we can love the sinner but we will not condone the sin.

International Redneck...Very good post! These types of lifestyles are indeed wrong, and they do hurt others not just the ones involved in them. Just because the temptation to live this way is there doesn't make it an acceptable lifestyle.

Internation Redneck, that is a great post, because it is to the point that 6:17 seems to miss.

Don't worry one way or another about this or any US Court of Appeals judge ever being confirmed. There are currently 50 vacancies, one of which has been vacant since 1994! In the last 3 decades, judges have been blocked or confirmed only due to political beliefs, not judicial skills or knowledge.

THE BIBLE PLAINLY STATES THAT IT IS A SIN FOR A MAN TO LIE DOWN WITH A MAN OR WOMAN TO LIE DOWN WITH A WOMAN. IF YOU ARE A TRUE CHRISTIAN HOW CAN YOU THINK THAT, THAT IS ALRIGHT. IF YOU ARE NOT FOR IT YOU ARE AGAINST IT AND YOU CAN NOT BE ON THE FENCE. THAT'S WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE COUNTRY TODAY TOO MANY PEOPLE COWTOWING TO THE IMMORAL MAJORITY. STAND FOR SOMETHING OR FALL FOR ANYTHING!!!!

anon 11:23

Translation of "you shall not kill" should be "you shall not murder". There's a difference between a capital punishment killing and a murder. The OT law even advocates capital punishment for certain offenses. One of which is murder.

The OT law does not say anything about resting on Sunday. It was Saturday.

Yes of course we can (and should) forgive. A paraphrase of what Jesus said is: any sin can be forgiven.

The point is, we as Christians are called to not live in sin. When Jesus healed and forgave, many times he said, “Now go and sin no more”. (What a hard thing to do!) We should strive to eradicate sin from our lives. This is a long and difficult process of constantly dying to self.

As Christian Americans, we oppose this post Christian doctrine of ‘let’s accept any life style so long as it doesn’t interfere with me personally’. To be frank, that life style is a corruption of our culture. I think that a good front for this battle though is an open discussion like in this blog.

The reason why so many people oppose that life style is because it just goes directly against the grain of our culture. Against the core of how we’ve been raised. An argument to that would be to throw out what we’ve been taught. How can we throw out that which has stood the test of time?

Jesus Christ is so radical that He changes the hearts of the most corrupt; a by product of that is a changed culture.

sounds like murder is a legal term not a bibical term....i bet we could get someone to "interpet" the bible so it is ok for a woman to have a wife....the mormans interpet their bible to have more than one wife.....killing is killing....like we are doing in Iraq.....someone will have to answer for it....maybe not the tigger puller, but someone....

The bible also says an eye for an eye so if someone commits murder then he too should be killed, When a person is committing murder does he take into consideration how his victim feels? why should anyone who has been proven guilty be allowed any more time than it takes to hook him up. Does he think about the family members who suffer the loss? No so why should be think about his rights?
