from 8.21.07 print edition of the herald-gazette:
Law enforcement,
judicial systems should
deal harshly with GC gunmen
An otherwise promising fall semester at Gordon College got off to an inauspicious start last week when shots were fired in a dormitory parking lot and through a housing unit common area.
Fortunately, no one was hit by any of the multiple bullets but we could very easily be writing this week of multiple dead students, staff and bystanders. This incident apparently stemmed from an earlier shooting at a party at a home on Greenwood Street in Barnesville where multiple shots were also fired.
From all indications, this was local thugs shooting at a student or students. Reports that the intended victim did not cooperate, at least initially, with authorities cast aspersions on his or her character as well.
Now six suspects are in jail for questioning in this matter. Once the factual wheat is separated from the evidentiary chaff, our law enforcement and judicial systems should deal with them harshly.
Frankly, we don’t want to hear anything like ‘he was in the wrong place at the wrong time’ coming from anyone’s mouth in connection with this attempted murder - and that is precisely what it is.
Charges should be the harshest possible. Bonds should be set only at the maximum level allowed by law. Ideally, these people with a wanton disregard for human life will stay in jail until trial and in prison until old age or longer following their days in court.
This is an opportunity for some folks right here in Barnesville-Lamar County, Georgia to set an example by getting tough on crime.
Let’s see if they do it or if they roll over!

Walter,
Well written and AMEN brother!!!!
Since I have little faith in the judicial system...especially, the DA and the judges...I am betting the "bleeding hearts" win the day.
I hope I am wrong!!!!
PS...looks like ole Ron Mexico is going to the dogs...I mean big the big house!!!!
I say lets take the lead and make an example out of all of them.
Let's get tough on this one. Throw the book at them. Punishing the criminals here would be nice for a change.
I just hope our DA doesnt pull out his Plea Deal Book and lets these persons get away with a crime that should be stopped by example of a strong penaly for those who commit such a crime.
It's time the DA quit wearing frilly lace undergarments and put on some men's undergarments.
Hopefully this will be one of the rare cases where he does the right thing and goes for the maximum.
Barnesville has enough people who get away with a gentle wrist slap via a plea deal, like the former B'ville Judge, Rudy, and the rest.
I hope the DA has the guts to take on a 20 year old!!!
With two shootings in a year, is Gordon a safe place to go to school?
Gordon has not had two shootings. Are you referring to the incident where someone yelled shots fired when there had not been? Let's get the facts straight. It is also important to note it's not Gordon people who did this drive by, but citizens of Barnesville.
Shootings and rumors of shootings. Citizens and non-citizens. Seems Barnesville and Gordon are beginning to accumulate a little thug culture of their own.
zda: barnesville-lamar county has had a thug culture for generations. spend some time in superior court.
usually the local thugs shoot at each other. this time they shot at students. hard to blame that on gordon.
Gordon students invite locals to parties there. Things get out of hand. Part of it is on Gordon. In the wake of the Va. Tech shootings, all college campus dorm security needs to be taken more seriously.
I think that they should make an example out of them (all involved) and give him the most harsh sentence possible for the crime that they commited. There is no justifiable reason to shoot randomly in to a college dorm. Barnesville used to be a safe place. Lets send a message to those little thugs that we intend to keep it that way.
GC has turned into Zuluville...
FOR YOUR INFORMATION THIS IS THE PERSON GIRLFRIEND. THE GORDON STUDENTS SHOT AT MY BOYFRIEND FIRST LEAVING 2 GUNSHOTS IN THE CAR. I KNOW HE WAS WRONG FOR FIRING SHOTS BACK AND I KNOW HE HAVE LEARNED HIS LESSON.I DON'T THINK AND I HOPE THEY DON'T SEND HIM UP THE ROAD SOMEWHERE. HE'S SITTING IN JAIL WAITING FOR HIS COURT DATE. I HOPE THE JUDGE DON'T GIVE HIM THAT MUCH TIME OR LET HIM OUT ON A BOND BECAUSE HE DOES HAVE A FAMILY. WE HAVE A ALMOST 9 MONTH OLD BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER TOGETHER THAT LOVES HIM DEARLY AND MISSES HIM TRULY CRYING FOR HIM EVERY NIGHT WHICH UPSETS ME. TO HEAR YOUR DAUGHTER CALLING HER DADDY AND HE'S NOT THERE AND COULD BE.
I HOPE THE JUDGE LET HIM OUT ON A BOND BECAUSE WE NEED HIM AND MISS HIM VERY MUCH.
