VOTE YES!

If I do vote, I will vote NO as my property taxes just went up, so why do I need to contribute more money to a failing school system who wants to build a new stadium! Perhaps if the money went to something important like the actual education of our children, I might feel differently.

Turnout will be low for a number or reasons:
1) Special ballots traditionally have a low turnout.
2) So many of us spend so little money in Lamar county, that an increase in the sales tax is negligible.

Anonymous said...

what is the sales tax now will it stay the same or go up ?

Anonymous said...

I will vote no, if a new stadium is built our Athlectic Director will run up another HUGE debt outfitting the stadium and team while our classrooms need textbooks and computers. If it passes I will shop out of town. I already purchase all my gas and groceries out of town. I'll just add a drugstore and a couple of resturants and I'll be set.

Anonymous said...

9:59Pm and 6:30 AM say it all i too buy everything out of town and this will just prove everybody else should also

Turnout will be low because SPLOST suppoters deliberately schedule these votes at times to get a low turnout which makes it more likely that they will win. Ruin their plan. Get out and vote no to a football stadium.

The sales tax will stay the same it WILL NOT go up! I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would vote no for this. All everyone keeps talking about is a new football stadium. Do you have all the facts or are you going off hear say? This is exactly the negative talk that other people hear about our school system. There are pamplets that answer the questions to all of these comments. They are in alot of the business' go down town pick one up and read it before making your final decision. Alot of the comments being made are incorrect. The school needs books and new computers, etc. If you vote No your property taxes WILL go up, why because of the bond that still needs to be paid off at the middle school. The SPLOST money that we have received has been paying the bonds, with no SPLOST money who do you think has to pay the bonds? The home and landowners of Lamar County do. So if you choose to vote no when you get your tax bill this year and it has gone up then you have only yourself to blame. So before the 18th everyone please check the facts before you vote No to something you may not fully understand. Thanks:o)

If all you care about is your property taxes going up then who in there right mind would vote no. If the SPLOST does not pass your property taxes will go up to cover the cost. If the SPLOST passes then your taxes will not go up for this reason. But if you do not have a problem with your taxes going up then by all means vote no.

6:30 & 7:41, you both make a great point as to why we should have a splost. When you do all your shopping in surrounding counties you are directly supporting the splost that those counties have. That is exactly why you have a splost, where everyone shares in the tax burden even the out of town shoppers, not just the property owners.( doesn't sound like yall really understand the principle of the splost or you don't have all the facts) I am sure the property owners in the counties where you shop appreciate you coming. Keep up those intelligent posts!!

9:05 am I to assume that the SPLOST money that has been collected has been misused?

When a SPLOST is enacted, it is put together and voted on and in the contract it is stated that the money collected will be used for a purpose. At the end of the term for which the SPLOST was contracted, the purpose is supposed to be paid.

Now you are saying that SPLOST didn't pay the bill it was voted on years ago to pay. That screams misuse of funds.

I'll be voting NO. Until proper management of funds is in place for the collected money, and the money is used for actual EDUCATIONAL purposes, everyone should vote NO.

ESPLOST should benefit every student in the school educationally. Please tell me how building a 10 million dollar football stadium will do that? The (requested future money mismanagement) will only benefit a small percentage of the students that are involved in some sports.

Folks are getting fed up with high taxes. Wars have started over less.

are they realy going to change the name of buggy days to CRACKER DAYS?

Anonymous said...

I understand that the tax will not change if I vote yes. It will go down 1 cent if I vote no. If I vote no it will be because I believe the money they are taking from me is being misspent. Just because the BOE wants the money and even needs the money is no reason to give it to them. My child is not allowed to spend money frivously so why should I give my money to someone else who will misuse it. Following someone blindly will only result in someone getting hurt.

Summers Field was old and needed renovating. True. It would cost less to renovate it than to build a new one. New books are nice to have but the books I learned with were sometimes 10 years old or older. Some even had tape holding the binding on. Basic math and grammar hasn't changed in ages but yet we need new books. I learned to read with Dick and Jane and Spot and I would be willing to bet I can read better than 99% of the students graduating today. So new stuff is not always needed. Sometimes the old just needs refurbishing. Use what we have wisely.
Every time we turn around they need to build a new school. I saw school buildings in England that were hundreds of years old but still in use. We pay more but get less for our money. I'm just getting tired of folks saying give me more, when they don't use what I give them properly.

Anonymous said...

I think you either misread or don't understand what was said before. The money has not been misused. They money is being used for the many purposes that it was intended to be used. Once again the Summersfield is not the issue that I am trying to get across. That is not at the top of my priorties. However my childrens education is my greatest priority! And if you have children that are actually in the Lamar County public school system then you should care as well. From what I have been told regardless of the whether we receive the SPLOST again or not a new stadium has to be built. Not because the BOE is misusing money but because if I have my information correct then the City now owns Summersfield and has plans for the use of it.(if I am wrong on that then sorry) So once again why not let other people that come in Barnesville and college kids that go out to eat, buy groceries, gas, etc. help. I am not going to beat a dying horse anymore, but you do what you feel is right and I will do what I know is right.

A stadium would be good for the schools. Its not like anyone can do anything with a diploma from a Georgia High School anyway...

I fully understand people have a right to vote the wat they feel and everyone thinks they have valid reasons for voting the way they do. I just hope that no voters fully understand they are voting for a property tax increase. That is a fact, reason being is because of bond debt that has to be paid that is currently being paid with splost funds. No splost then those debt payments have to come from the school system budget I believe. Where does that budget come from? (property taxes I believe) New stadium or none of the other improvements will be done without splost.

I don't disagree with some posters that bad decisions have been made by some of our elected officials. Personally, I believe the time to voice this is when it's election time for them. Who will we really be punishing, a handful of elected officials or all the property owners in Lamar County?

taxes never go down.....just change who pays for it....it is a foregone conclusion that this will pass.....if they didnt think it would pass, they wouldnt have brought it up for a vote.....they aint gonna let it fail.....they want to use that extra money......the businesses are for it, because some will collect it and not turn it in....

Anonymous said...

a new stadium WILL BE BUILT!!! what will it take to get you idiots to see this??? the old stadium is as good as gone so there has to be a place for the team to play whether you support it or like it or not. one of the best things ever done, so far, was the building of the athletic complex at the middle school. the kids that play out there have a sense of pride in having a place to call home. in its first year, aldora field hosted the first ever state playoff baseball series in school history. the lady trojan softball team is not far behind. and once the new football stadium IS built, the trojans will return to the state playoffs soon after. so vote yes, vote no, dont vote, whatever. a new stadium is on the horizon like it or not.

IT'S APPARENT THAT SOMEBODY COUNTED CHICKENS BEFORE THEY HATCHED. THE ILLEGAL LAND DEAL THAT THE ELECTED ONES DID NOTHING ABOUT HOPEFULLY WILL COME BACK TO HAUNT THEM NOW. I TRULY HOPE IT DOES AND I HOPE IT OPENS THE EYES OF SOME OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTY.

HOWEVER, IT'S THEIR PROBLEM. SOMEBODY TRIED TO STOP IT BUT HAD VERY LITTLE SUPPORT.

NO VISION WILL BITE YOU IN THE BUTT EVERT TIME. DON'T EXPECT THE CITIZENS TO ANSWER FOR THE STUPIDY OF THE COMMISSIONERS AND THE CHEATING WAYS OF THE CITY AND BOARD OF EDUCATION.

so did it pass.....anyone know???

Vote NO, then cry some more when your taxes increase. Go shop in Griffin, Macon, Zebulon, Thomaston, Atlanta and help their "superior" schools by contributing to their SPLOST. Check out the GA DOE website. NONE of the surrounding counties schools are too much further ahead than ours. So instead of helping your own commnunity schools, you just help the other public school systems buy books, computer equipment, and support their athletics. How smart does that make all of you NO voters?

anonymous said...

Summers field is something special, I played there 21 years ago and never will forget the memories but the time has come for a new stadium. But the splost fund is not about a new stadium. If you vote YES there will be no new taxes. There will be purchases of computers and system wide technology upgrades. Purchases of buses, transportation and maintenance vehicles and equipment. There will be new textbooks, furishings, band instruments, vocational equipment, and physical education equipment. Improvements to athletic facilities, including a new stadium, track, and addition to the LCHS gymnasium. So if you want to vote NO then you might want to research what the SPLOST fund is all about. If you vote NO and the splost does not pass your taxes will go up and the kids of lamar county that go to public shools will suffer the outcome.

Anonymous said...

You people have been brainwashed into ignorance. You think your taxes will go up if you vote no. You're saying that the people you elect won't listen to you and will do whatever they want. But, you will go to the polls and put them back in office. Now whos fault is it?

Don't believe me? Go to the dictionary and look up the word stupid. The definition: See Lamar County voting citizens. Those people who worry about taxes but do nothing to change it. Those people who try and talk other people into being stupid too.

SPLOST is good to help with education when it used for that purpose. This SPLOST is being used to only benefit the students involved in sports (namely football) or less than 5% of the students.

Sorry to say that this time the board of education has their head in the wrong place and stuck there.

Vote NO and if they want to increase taxes, replace them.

I think you will find that almost all citizens support education. Not all of them support misuse of the funds they are entrusted to work with.

With our ranking, we should put our money toward education, not sports.

Anonymous said...

STUPID: One who continues to state that SPLOST is only going to be used for sports.

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry, but I believe that the BASEBALL fields were payed for with monies from the SPLOST. That is not football. Once again it isn't about the sports for me it is about what is best for my children and their education. If you harbor ill feeling's toward the land swap, then don't take it out on the kids. Because ultimately they will be the ones to suffer. I am not talking about sports either. I am talking about computers, books, supplies for the teachers, playground equipment, etc. I will vote YES for my children and their education because that is what matters most to me. If you care anything about the children in our community, then I ask that you put your feelings of the land swap aside for just a bit tommorrow and do some good for the kids. They will be our future some day:o)

What a moron!

On the other hand I think you the moron to vote yourself more tax. Moron.

The only cry babies are the ones that have kids in school and they want somebody else to help the bill.

I think everyone should pay their part property tax for education but that the majority of any other money should be paid by those still getting a paycheck and not living on a fixed income.

Guess how much that 1 cent adds up to on a 25K vehicle, $250.00

Now if you spend 25K a year, at the end of the 6 year term you contribute $1500.00.

Wow that 1 cent adds up. That means 1 out of every 6 years I have saved enough to pay my property tax by voting NO. Or I caould vote yes and be $3000 in the hole. Or would it be $4500.

1500.00 Splost
1500.00 Additional tax paid 1500.00 lost liquid assets (Tax)
$4500.00

$3000 lost $4500 realized

I read the last post a few times, I am still unsure of its meaning. Did you mean that since I work that I should have to pay more, and that people that don't work and collect assistance should not have to? If so, please enlighten me as to how that is fair. My children are in public school here, I own my own home and I pay my taxes. How am I crying if I get up and go to work everyday while my children attend school here? Me voting yes is what is best for my children and the children of our community. I don't know if Walter has on her a copy of what the ballot looks like. I saw it on another site earlier and it spelled out what the monies for the SPLOST would be used for. If you haven't, go exploring on the internet and find it for yourself.

Hey Moron, I'm not voting to tax myself more. i am voting to keep it the same and give myself help on my property taxes.

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry, but I believe that the BASEBALL fields were payed for with monies from the SPLOST.

906 the Trojan Athletic Complex, at which the baseball and softball fields are a part of, were paid for largely by an anonymous donor NOT splost so if anyone wants to anonymously build the new football stadium we'll make sure you get lifetime season tickets. otherwise, tax dollars are going to pay for it. the stadium WILL be built, whether by splost, those who shop Lamar County, or by inflated property taxes. vote YES and everyone that shops pays. vote NO the property taxes get jacked to pay for it. it's really simple people.

Anonymous said...

Splost funds paid for the new Athletic Complex. That is the problem with these blogs, people posting don't know the facts.

Anonymous said...

9:07 you set the example. SPLOST and E-SPLOST are different and have different rules on how the money can be used.

GET THE FACTS YOURSELF!

Anonymous said...

I am not opposed to the idea of a SPLOST itself, rather the way the money is to be spent. Renovation to the board of education offices? If my memory serves me correctly, I attend high school 10 years ago in those same classrooms, now being used as offices. We were told back then that a new high school was in the works.

We might see a new high school by the time my 4 year old gets there. Hopefully so.

907 the city of Aldora fit the bill for AT LEAST the baseball field at the athletic complex. thus the name, ALDORA FIELD. you are the one who needs to get your facts straight before you start opening your pie hole here
