OMG! This is terrible. What an embarassment for the city of Barnesville.
The video really speaks for itself I think is a shame that we as Americans still live with this type of negativisms I don't think Barnesville should allow this to go on. A festival should be for all not one race. This video is a real embarrassment for me as a citizen. I really think that our elected leaders should take a look at this and see that this is not needed. I have lived here for several years and not one time have I been to buggy days and heard white people running around saying that its white folks day and the times that i do go there is a lot of black people there so that is crazy that someone would even comment that way. As a firm believer in my lord and savior I pray for these young people on this video and for the ones that are having to live in a world where people allow this to happen
Scoop, since you brought this to the attention of all of us, what is your opinion of the video and of the state of race relations in Barnesville? We obviously have more of a problem than we care to admit. Can we fix it? Dialogue is good and maybe this subject needs the air you gave it but if the scab just grows back over the sore, you accomplished nothing.
I couldn't care less as to what these refer to their festival. I didn't know Lamar county had a NAACP chapter. However, I am without words to describe the stupidity it takes for someone to stand on the railroad tracks while the crossing lights are blinking and the bell is ringing. At my rough estimate, I had about 20 people standing on the railroad tracks about 2 minutes into the film. I think before we start worrying about what people can and can't say, we should teach a little common sense.
Not all of the individuals in the video stated that it was "N-word day." There were individuals that knew the significance of the day being celebrated. In fact, the three young ladies at the end are my neices and not one time did they indicate or state that the day was "N-word day." They held firm to the fact that the event was "The Black Arts Festival." Also, another young man on the video continued to indicate that the day was "Emancipation Proclamation...Negro Day...Black Heritage Day...African-American Day..." and I applaud him as well. There was not a cross-section of individuals from Barnesville's Black community that were represented. Only an ignorant subculture that did more damage to themselves than to the overall community. I am from Barnesville...born and reared. While I no longer reside in Barnesville (or Georgia) I know that what was on that videotape IS NOT indicative of Barnesville's Black community. My heart goes out to all those that the tape showed were misguided. I will forever hold my head up and proclaim my hometown. If the actions of a few make you hang your head, then what does that speak of your integrity? We all have "brain fart" moments (unfortunately). However, that videotape is NOT a sad commentary on Barnesville. Rather, it is a sad commentary on the failure of parents to properly direct their own children about their specific heritage. To paint the overall Black community in Barnesville with a broad brush stroke is, at the very least, racist...and at the very most, just plain ignorant.
Where's the integrity and dignity of the cameraman? Why didn't he offer to correct those few, sad, often misguided individuals? All he did was make a mockery of them to carelessly (and irresponsibly) make a name for himself. In fact, I noticed that he asked the same people the same question over and over again hoping to catch them off guard so that the first thing from their mouth to describe the event was "N-word day." There were people that clearly and blatantly ignored him. Also, how long was he at the festival and how much footage did he tape and how much did he edit? I sure hope that he just did not settle for ten minutes worth of footage to prove a point. Then, he throws up his credentials as though someone should be so overly impressed and not willing to challenge him.
I am proud of my hometown. For those that showed THEIR INDIVIDUAL SELVES in a bad light...shame on you!

I too would like (expect) to receive comment, concerns, solutions from our Mayor who is the leader of Barnesville for all of us. We, the white community, supported him and still do. If I was a black leader of this town I would be questioning what we have done wrong and try to fix the problem. If a white leader tried to do anything about it he would be called a racist. So I hope the the festival organizers and black leaders would call a meeting to fix the problems. I also believe the police need to take more control before it gets so out of hand the we turn into Clayton County.

did he make money off this film. I watched it for free and didn't see a single commercial. Maybe he doesn't see the subjects of his film as being "of his own color", or maybe he doesn't believe that his "color" is off limits and a taboo. What civil right was that again? They have freedom of expression. So does Dr. Mike. And both of them have a freedom to look as ignorant or as intelligent as they want. Having someone point out your apparent faults is not a violation of your rights. And since when is our right of expression conditional on how ignorant it makes us look. They also had a right to be educated and informed on the day's events and they had a right to keep their mouths shut instead of demonstrating their absurd lack of knowledge and class. However, they chose to waive those rights. Do they have a right to express their ignorance, yet not be called on it?
Dr. Mike caught the black community of this town with their pants down. The sad part is that instead of accepting responsibility, many of you are trying to point a finger and play the film's subjects as "victims" (of what, their own ignorance), or sitting and complaining that the government isn't doing enough for these young people. It's not the government's job to raise your kids and ensure they don't make asses out of themselves. Here is an idea. Hold yourselves accountable for you own actions and don't give people a "pass" or an excuse for theirs because they are black. There will always be someone to blame other than yourself if you look hard enough.

for the person who posted that there should be a good basketball team for these people to play on, we have one. it's called the lamar county high school trojans. the school offers many constructive ways for our young people to express themselves and participate in meaningful activities. all they have to do is go to school, do what they are supposed to do while they are there and many doors are opened to them. our school's sports programs are usually average or below average because there are so many kids who are potentially gifted athletes who cant play because they dont want to pay the price. it's not that hard folks.

No, not all black people act this way, but unfortunately, the largest majority of black youth in Barnesville act this way. Young men need positive role models and the truth is, there are very few positive role models in the black families now days. If you noticed, there were mostly young people in this video. I teach or have taught these children; they are people! Some of you talk about them as if they are dogs. Yet, people of different races certainly come together for football games. Why is that?Disagree with their perspectives...teach the young people you know a better way.
Most of these were 14-18 year-olds who learned this attitude from their parents or relatives. Is it any different for the Whites? I see many white children in my classes whose parents have passed down racist attitudes. As for blaming the school system, trust me we are doing our best every day; we need support from the family and community.

I am against our current public school system as much as the next gov't fearing citizen. However, I totally agree that given what they have to work with, our teachers are going above and beyond. The parents and families are letting these children down, and blaming it on the schools. You can't raise an ignorant child and send them off to your free schools and expect a model citizen to get off the bus that afternoon. Some people know it as GIGO; garbage in, garbage out.

I am quiet concerned that the Mayor hasn't stepped up to the mark and apologised to the majority of Barnesville residents who, irrespective of their color would be appalled by the type of behavoir shown in this video. Its such a shame that this video will probably never be shown to the organisors of the "African Heritage" day, I'm certain that questions would be raised.

There is a double standard. When a white person uses the "N" word he is villified in the press. Marches are held. Protest are organized. Press conferences are called. Jesse Jackson can call New York "Hymie town", others can use the word Honkey, but when whites protest the double standard, the whites are called racist. I agree that racism is a problem and not just in the South. But whites aren't the only racists. Many of the black leaders today are extremely racist. And they don't see that they are actually creating a larger gulf between the races. It takes two to argue and sometimes if you let something slide, it will smooth its self out. Really this just goes to show that Black History needs to be focused on more than one month. Teachers spending more time teaching about Black History would show these young people where they came from and the struggles (the hills and mountians) their ancestors had to go through to have their lives as well as it is now. This also goes for the parents too...tell your children about their roots and how important Education is, KNOWLEGDE is something that nobody can take away. Get it (knowledge) we need it just like we need air.

I think that kids these days need to be educated on black history and what their ancestors went through to get us where we are in society today. I couldn't care less as to what these refer to their festival. I didn't know Lamar county had a NAACP chapter. However, I am without words to describe the stupidity it takes for someone to stand on the railroad tracks while the crossing lights are blinking and the bell is ringing. At my rough estimate, I had about 20 people standing on the railroad tracks about 2 minutes into the film. I think before we start worrying about what people can and can't say, we should teach a little common sense.

Not all of the individuals in the video stated that it was "N-word day." There were individuals that knew the significance of the day being celebrated. In fact, the three young ladies at the end are my neices and not one time did they indicate or state that the day was "N-word day." They held firm to the fact that the event was "The Black Arts Festival." Also, another young man on the video continued to indicate that the day was "Emancipation Proclamation...Negro Day...Black Heritage Day...African-American Day..." and I applaud him as well. There was not a cross-section of individuals from Barnesville's Black community that were represented. Only an ignorant subculture that did more damage to themselves than to the overall community. I am from Barnesville...born and reared. While I no longer reside in Barnesville (or Georgia) I know that what was on that videotape IS NOT indicative of Barnesville's Black community. My heart goes out to all those that the tape showed were misguided. I will forever hold my head up and proclaim my hometown. If the actions of a few make you hang your head, then what does that speak of your integrity? We all have "brain fart" moments (unfortunately). However, that videotape is NOT a sad commentary on Barnesville. Rather, it is a sad commentary on the failure of parents to properly direct their own children about their specific heritage. To paint the overall Black community in Barnesville with a broad brush stroke is, at the very least, racist...and at the very most, just plain ignorant.
Where's the integrity and dignity of the cameraman? Why didn't he offer to correct those few, sad, often misguided individuals? All he did was make a mockery of them to carelessly (and irresponsibly) make a name for himself. In fact, I noticed that he asked the same people the same question over and over again hoping to catch them off guard so that the first thing from their mouth to describe the event was "N-word day." There were people that clearly and blatantly ignored him. Also, how long was he at the festival and how much footage did he tape and how much did he edit? I sure hope that he just did not settle for ten minutes worth of footage to prove a point. Then, he throws up his credentials as though someone should be so overly impressed and not willing to challenge him.

What civil right was that again? They have freedom of expression. So does Dr. Mike. And both of them have a freedom to look as ignorant or as intelligent as they want. Having someone point out your apparent faults is not a violation of your rights. And since when is our right of expression conditional on how ignorant it makes us look. They also had a right to be educated and informed on the day's events and they had a right to keep their mouths shut instead of demonstrating their absurd lack of knowledge and class. However, they chose to waive those rights. Do they have a right to express their ignorance, yet not be called on it?

for the person who posted that there should be a good basketball team for these people to play on, we have one. it's called the lamar county high school trojans. the school offers many constructive ways for our young people to express themselves and participate in meaningful activities. all they have to do is go to school, do what they are supposed to do while they are there and many doors are opened to them. our school's sports programs are usually average or below average because there are so many kids who are potentially gifted athletes who cant play because they dont want to pay the price. it's not that hard folks.

Young men need positive role models and the truth is, there are very few positive role models in the black families now days. If you noticed, there were mostly young people in this video. I teach or have taught these children; they are people! Some of you talk about them as if they are dogs. Yet, people of different races certainly come together for football games. Why is that?Disagree with their perspectives...teach the young people you know a better way.
Most of these were 14-18 year-olds who learned this attitude from their parents or relatives. Is it any different for the Whites? I see many white children in my classes whose parents have passed down racist attitudes. I totally agree. The ignorance that has been portrayed on this blog has surprised me, even for barnesville. Not because I didn't think it existed, but because I find it hard to believe that some of these idiots can turn on a computer.
I am against our current public school system as much as the next gov't fearing citizen. However, I totally agree that given what they have to work with, our teachers are going above and beyond. The parents and families are letting these children down, and blaming it on the schools. You can't raise an ignorant child and send them off to your free schools and expect a model citizen to get off the bus that afternoon. Some people know it as GIGO; garbage in, garbage out.

I am quiet concerned that the Mayor hasn't stepped up to the mark and apologised to the majority of Barnesville residents who, irrespective of their color would be appalled by the type of behavoir shown in this video.
Its such a shame that this video will probably never be shown to the organisors of the "African Heritage" day, I'm certain that questions would be raised.

ALL OF THIS IS COMPLETE IGNORANCE. I can honestly see why I left Barnesville. Truth is, I am a young black male and I see ignorance on both parts, white and black. I do agree that some of the people in the video presented our race as being crass and ignorant for condoning to the N-word and showing a unnecessary way of representing the black race. However, to see some of the comments that some individuals of the white race left, only made me come to the conclusion that the only reason why some of these black people act this way is in defense to the racism recieved from the white race. Although the younger white generation are slowly getting over the racist issue, it is BULLSH*T to say that it is over. As far as the N-word, I don't use it, or condone to it at all, but I think that if someone can take a negative word and change it into something postive then we are one step closer to getting rid of dumb ass racist flaws in life. There is a double standard. When a white person uses the "N" word he is villified in the press. Marches are held. Protest are organized. Press conferences are called. Jesse Jackson can call New York "Hymie town", others can use the word Honkey, but when whites protest the double standard, the whites are called racist.
I agree that racism is a problem and not just in the South. But whites aren't the only racists. Many of the black leaders today are extremely racist. Really this just goes to show that Black History needs to be focused on more than one month. Teachers spending more time teaching about Black History would show these young people where they came from and the struggles (the hills and mountians) their ancestors had to go through to have their lives as well as it is now. This also goes for the parents too...tell your children about their roots and how important Education is, KNOWLEGDE is something that nobody can take away. Get it (knowledge) we need it just like we need air.
I want talk about anybody from that video I will just pray that they wake up and be mature enough to realize what the real reasons are for this heritage festival.

I think that kids these days need to be educated on black history and what their ancestors went through to get us where we are in society today. As far as people calling it "nigga day", I myself has taught my child "emancipation proclamation" which explained to him that this originated from president Abe Lincoln who signed a new bill that declared slaves to be free and slavery abolished. I also feel that not enough black history is being taught in the school systems (at least not in Lamar Co.) and that all cultures and races should be taught instead of just one race.
Tell us K.W. what you have been taught about slavery.
