draft: another reader suggested topic...
do we need a military draft?

you darn right we need a draft! think of the far reaching benifits of the draft. we would actually be turn responsible men back into the coummunity to become responsible fathers rather that sperm donors. not to mention the fact that you OWN America for the freedoms that you enjoy.
I don't think a draft should serve the pupose of teaching our young to be responsible men. Why don't you do it yourself? If we are thrown into a conflict that would constitute a need for a draft, then I am all for one, but our military isn't a fall back plan for government schooling and poor parenting.
I believe we do just fine with a volunteer army. With no conflict to provide the demand for more soldiers, why should the tax payers be forced to pay the upkeep of an unneeded military force. Why should men and women be forced to enter the service during times of peace? In this day of equality, I am sure women should be included as well. Should all young men be included in the draft, or just those that don't confine to your dress-code and your idea of responsibility?
When they're old enough to be drafted they're also old not to be forced to listen to their parents. Military bases need to be kept spruced up to so use slick sleeve draftees to perform all the hard labor. If a person drops out of school they should be faced with a real fear of being drafted to perform hard labor while being forced to obtain a high school education as a miminum. This will usually encourage them to seek higher learning too. It will teach them responsibility and keep them from being bums on the street. If they don't perform, the only way to go is downhill into harder restrictions and more work for less pay with less access to things that will get into civilian jails. The military can be a rewarding experience and it can also be a wake-up call to young people that are looking for a free ride.
one thing for sure....if we had a draft....the president would be forced to end the useless Iraq war......there would be alot pressure put on him by his own party to stop the war...
i would suggest a 2 year minimum of service to the branch of your choice. as a veteran of the USMC, i can assure you that they would learn levels of responsibility that are hardly learned anywhere else, they would receive training in a specific field for which they would be suited, and enjoy many life experiences that can only be had in the service.
Anon 6:01, You missed my point. We don't need to use our military as a means of "parenting", for lack of a better word, our young adults. If we revamp our welfare system, then the free ride you are talking about will not be available to able bodies that chose to drop out of high school. Also, that will save us tax money, instead of costing us more. I thought we were a free people. That means the freedom to be as great or as sorry as you want to be. If John Dumbass wants to drop out of school and dig ditches 2 days a week for the rest of his life, I couldn't care less. Just don't ask me to pay for his housing, food, healthcare, and retirement.
I didn't quite understand the following sentence, "If they don't perform, the only way to go is downhill into harder restrictions and more work for less pay with less access to things that will get into civilian jails." It sounds to me, though, that you want the draft to only affect high school drop outs. And if that doesn't teach them anything, you want them to be deprived of basic "luxuries" offered to criminals in jails. You want someone who chose to drop out of high school, and not listen to his drill seargents to face a harsher penalty than a rapist or murderer?
As someone who has never served in any of our branches, first, I thank you for your service; second, I am just as reponsible, if not more so, than my friends that have served; have great training in a field that suits me just fine; and have had many great life experiences without the government forcing me to do so.
Once again, I am all for a draft if a millitary conflict calls for one, but not as a means of further government controlled education.
The overwhelming majority of US military leaders are against the draft for a couple of reasons:
1) Morale - People forced into service generally have a bad attitude which will spread and have a negative impact on the effectiveness of the entire army.
2) Technology - The armed forces have changed radically with the advent of technology over the last 20 years. The need of large infantry forces are no longer required. What is required is a highly trained, motivated technical force.
All the draft would do is increase the casualty rate & decrease are ability to effectively fight.
Find a different mandatory employment program for the misguided youth.
I believe we need a draft, but not like the one we have. I personally believe that in order to receive any kind of government funding (Welfare,etc...)or the right to vote, you must give two years in a government type job. Either military, or if you dont want to join the military then garbage pick up, mowing yards, etc... I believe we take our citizeship for granted. I dont believe that just because you were born in the USA youare "owed" anything. It must be earned.
also, are midgets in more danger from landmines that their taller counterparts or does their low center of gravity and dense form aid in their survivability rate?

If anything, we have created more crazed individuals who hate us and will plot against us in time. We should have gotten Osama before we entered the quagmire of Iraq.

Unfortunately, no nation, especially a democracy, has yet to be victorious against terrorist attacks unless the they choose to eliminate large population groups through genocide, which has never been a US strategy anywhere including Iraq.
With the media being made up of 80% liberals, I highly doubt a spin doctor has changed or altered a Republicans mind. The Universities of the US are just the same with their left winged indoctrination of students. Still after all this unbelievable "leaning" in the media and on almost all college campuses the Republicans still have a very strong foothold in this country. Back to the point, walking around believing that no country has yet to defeat terrorism shouldn't be the mind set of the American people, (no one ever flew until two American brothers decided to put their minds to it), and leaving this alone is not going to solve anything. If we walk away then all the crazies are going to have an easy, clear path to converge and plot against us with no resistance at all because the people in Iraq will be right back under some other idiots thumb. If you draft the women into the army they should also have to fight because if they choose to make the money that the men they should do the same work.
Midgets do in fact float. Also, midgets make great building materials. They can be used for boats, air strips, temporary bridges, artillery placements, and whatever else is needed.
