reader reports tainted pet food experience....

My cats ate Special Kitty tuna cuts in gravy. My 15 yr old ate the most and she died the day before the recall. My 12 yr old got the next largest amount and spent 3 days at the vets on iv's. She will have to have special food and monitoring of her kidney levels, I don't know for how long. Kidneys don't regenerate very well. My youngest cat ate some of the food and threw it up immediately...probably saved her from problems. She has shown no symptoms. I reported to Menu Foods and also the state FDA representatves. I am waiting for my claim form packet to arrive. I don't know if you have kept up with the latest:

China has admitted to spiking the protein content for the last 15 yrs, in many ingredients.

Over the last 12 yrs. there has been a steady increase in human kidney cases.

The FDA imposed a hold on Chinese ingredients until they can be proven not tainted.

Now for the products to reach U.S. foodmakers, the importers will have to prove to the FDA that they are safe. The ingredients restricted include wheat gluten, rice gluten, rice protein, rice protein concentrate, corn gluten, corn gluten meal, corn by-products, soy protein, soy gluten, mung-bean protein and amino acids.

The FDA rule only affects human food makers. It does not directly impact imported grains to be used for other purposes such as animal food. Just yesterday, it was reported that over 2.5 million chickens in Indiana had been fed melamine tainted feed. All, but 100,000 have already been sold for human consumption. The FDA has decided against a recall since they "do not believe there is any significant threat of human illness from this"

If there is no threat from it, why are they imposing a hold?

Something doesn't jive here & I think it's our trust in the government.

just why the hell are we getting any type of grain, corn or rice from china anyway?

anon 12:45,
cheap, cheap cheap.
The same reason almost everything we own is not made here.

Because we get it cheaper and undercut the americans. The gov't should be ashamed of the way it is treating the people of its own country. There should be some type of ban on purchasing products from another country if it is available in this country.

This is exactly why so many Americans are out of work. The USA shoots itself in the foot all the time!

I thought these foods were for cats. You said your 15 year old and your 12 year old got into it and cashed in their chips. How did your cars do?

I hate PETA. They always bi23h about helping animals, but what have thay ever done for wildlife. It's the hunter who actually do thing's to help preserve wildlife.Just like liberal's! Alway's crying about something but never willing to do anything about it. I would have much more respect for those people if they would open one wildlife preservation.
