I have no problem with her swearing on the Koran. It wouldn't make much since for a Muslim to swear on the Bible.
Why does this have to be news? I think what ever religion a person is they should have to swear their oath on the doctrine of their religion. No big deal
The Bible is sworn on because it stands for truth. There is no truth in the Koran. By the way, the Koran has words in it to the effect that if you do not believe the Muslim way, you are an infidel, and should be killed. Now, how do we like that in America?
America can be taken down easily without much resistance because we are so tolerant. Little things like this is how it begins. When a nation puts The True God on the level with all of the false gods, that is the sign of a weak nation. We are getting there fast.

As free thinker pointed out many elected officials haveused other religious writings to be sworn in.
One of the beauties of loving in American is religious freedom and freedom of choice, and he is exercising those rights.
The Bible stands for the truth for certain people. The Koran stands for the truth for others. Don't be so ignorant as to think what you believe in is universally accepted as "truth".
Your talk of the "True God" sounds very familiar to radical muslim talk about their God. When it comes down to it, there isn't a whole lot of difference between radical Christians and radical Muslims.
Religion needs to be taken out of politics completely. The Republican party's refusal to separate itself from the Christian right is the main reason they lost the mid-term elections. If they don't start to separate themselves from these wackos, i can assure they will continue their slide in the 2008 presidential election.

Fact is fact...there is but one God and He is the One of THE BIBLE. I am not an extremist but a realist. If you are a Christian, that is your life, and cannot be separated from every other part of your life. If a person is an atheist, I assure you that it will show in every part of their life, too.

That is why religion should be made separate from politics. Believe it or not, but I AM a Christian. However, I do not feel that it is my duty to preach and try to convert others to my "right" religion.
Realistically speaking, it's not our duty to judge and condemn others for there supposed nonbelief.

As a Christian I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and asked Him to come into my heart and forgive me of my sins. As a Christian it is my duty to share the gospel with the lost people of this world. Jesus told his disciples to "go and spread the gospel to all the world and then I will come." As Christians, we are the disciples today. It is our ministry to lead lost souls to salvation. So many people call themselves Christians today, but they haven't a clue.

What is Religious Intolerance?
Webster's New World Dictionary (1995) defines intolerant as: "not tolerant; unwilling to tolerate other's opinions, beliefs, etc..."
Webster's defines tolerate in part as: "to recognize and respect others' beliefs, practices etc. without sharing them"
A working definition of religious intolerance is a combination of the above: "not respecting the fundamental human right of other people to hold religious beliefs that are different from your own."
See yourself? Religious bigotry is still bigotry and it is founded on ignorance and fear.
Mr. Ellison, America, not you, decides on what book its public servants take their oath. Not because of any American hostility to the Koran, but because the act undermines American civilization.
Naive people do not appreciate that America will not change the attitude of a single American-hating Muslim by allowing Ellison to substitute the Koran for the Bible. In fact, the opposite is more likely: Ellison's doing so will embolden Islamic extremists and make new ones, as Islamists, rightly or wrongly, see the first sign of the realization of their greatest goal -- the Islamicization of America.
When all elected officials take their oaths of office with their hands on the very same book, they all affirm that some unifying value system underlies American civilization. If Keith Ellison is allowed to change that, he will be doing more damage to the unity of America and to the value system that has formed this country than the terrorists of 9-11. It is hard to believe that this is the legacy most Muslim Americans want to bequeath to America. But if it is, it is not only Europe that is in trouble.

To thetruthasiknowit, please read Matthew Chapter 28 verse 19. All Christians have the responsibility to follow this verse and tell all we come in contact with about our Savior. Oh, by the way that verse is in the Bible.
I find it interesting when one's own religion describes their God as "omni"(all) and yet doesen't seem to understand that any one religion can only preceive a fragment of God. The really sad part is that they will go through their entire life with this lack of understanding and use it to drive a wedge between themselves and others.
Religions are mind controlling....you have a point, but your mind must be controlled by something, and I prefer mine to be controlled by Jesus Christ. We didn't just happen to be here, but were created by a God who made our minds. When we start wanting to run the show, that is when we become self sufficent and start messing up the world that He made. He does have a plan though and He will carry it out in spite of humanity who think they know more than Him.
Of course we are free to change what America is. That is the nature of democracy. We no longer allow slavery. Women may now vote. Presidents may only serve two terms. It is the very strength of this country that it can adapt and change to the realities facing it. To do otherwise is to be reactionary and blind.
Sorry I have been a little late in responding to these posts. There is nothing wrong with spreading the gospel, however forcing the Bible down the throats of non-believers is extremist behavior. In my opinion radical Christians are no better than the Muslim extremists that we condemn.
As Cameron Frye pointed out Christians there is a fine line between "spreading the word" and forcing it upon someone.
Rev. Mr. Black, I believe that I have a clue what Christianity is about. It is a religion that teaches tolerance and respect for humankind. As we both know it is not our duty to judge others.

Thank you Frank. Communication is much better between individuals. I too am grateful for our individual freedoms and I know that I am misunderstood on this issue. In my opinion, the American people as a majority will hold this person much more accountable to an oath on the Holy Bible over an oath on the Koran; an oath on a book that sees us as infidels and inferior to their religion.
Imagine for a moment that you are president of a major company and one of your new employees refuses to agree to company policy and demands that his/her own policy, which greatly conflicts with existing policy, be recognized. Will you succumb to those demands or insist that the policy already in place be adhered to?
The majority of the American people, which are Christians, recognize the Holy Bible as the already established rules to follow. If his oath is on the Koran, and he murders an American infidel, according to his religion, he has committed no crime. And, our ignorance allowed it.
I have nothing against this man being a Muslim. That is his choice. However, if he is going to join our company, he will abide by already established policy and obey the rule book of the employers (the people) that hired him.
