My assessment was so filled with errors it wasn't funny. Attempting to appeal was a joke. Who do these people think they are?
I wonder where this collection of fools think the money for this fantasy increase is supposed to come from? Everything else is cutting back except for the stupid government.

I warned everyone last year! Only 5 people protested the tax increase because they only shafted 1/3 of the digest!!!

The total tax increase last year was $1,300,000 and there will be a big increase again this year!!!
If you do not protest the valuations and then go the the Commissioners meetings and force rated reductions at least equal to the % increase, you will get what we got last year!!!!
YOU MUST PROTEST THE RATES WITH THE COMMISSIONERS!!!!!
You must also protest rate increases with the School Board.

Commissioner Hardwick is on record stating he would support a roll back of the millage rate to make up for the increased values.
This is ridiculous. Tax assessors be ashamed. Suicide is up...wages are way down...food is up...gas is up...water is up...electricity is up...how can you do this to us? Is it because assessor begins with ass?
Government hungers people...we must feed it. Hardwick needs to make sure the digest is rolled back and the school board needs to reign in their spending too. At the very least we need to tread water for a little while until the economy stabilizes. We need to have our belts so tight right now that our toes turn blue.
From what I hear there's one woman in the tax office who's trying to raise us to Peachtree City's tax level so that she can single-handedly run off the riff-raff from Barnesville. Anybody know anything about this?
My house taxes went up 40% from last year. This, ironically, after I've had roof shingles blown off from storm damage a few months ago. We ought to all paint out houses hot pink in protest. Oh, yeah. Can't afford paint now. Dang.
I don't know about hot pink houses, but I could quit cutting my grass in protest.
I've been screwed year after year. They lie and say they hit one area and then another, but they screw me virtually every year.
Protesting is a joke. One year I went in to appeal and they raised it even more. None of the idiots on the board knew the first thing about real property values.
Look at what happened this year. Property values are DOWN now, not up. Everyone knows they are down. They reappraised me last year and raised mine, they did it again this year.
I need to get on the commission or some other thing so I can steal money **and** have cheap taxes.
Good luck protesting. When I tried it the people, none of which had any idea about property values, raised mine even more.

Im young dumb, but isn't the value based on fair market value. With the current housing market conditions, especially in barnesville, on what basis can an appraiser raise the value of someone's home? If you could only sell your home for 100k in the current market, that is fair market value.
Also, do any of you ever wonder what you are getting out of the money spent on the local school board? If you were buying something in the free market, would you pay more for something that is giving you less and less return each year? I think the school board should show us some improvement in the quality education our kids are getting. If their budget went up, shouldn't there be a direct increase in the test scores and number of kids going to and succeeding in college? I bet there won't be. All this money will be eaten up by beauracrats.
My house went down about 20%- maybe they were correcting an overvalued assessment from years before??? Sure don't want to think that my house's value plunged that much in one year.....
The value of any property is determined by the owners ability to resale to a persective customer. With the housing market in the toilet and being the worse since decades with increase of over 30 percent is totally unreasonable.

The truth is anyone who gets in office starts pandering. When the pandering starts the people get stiffed.
Just look at how the local Government works.
Most of it is bad management, not spending on welfare. Like that mismanaged war Bush started, or on a local scene mismanaged things like the Ag Authority. A group of FINE citizens in the clique gave big money to the city against the law and the chickens in the county just let it happen.
Another thing will be this Chinese factory. We will give tax cuts and loans and pay for training just to move a few jobs here from other areas of our own country. Most of the value will be exported to China, and result in a net loss of AMERICAN manufacturing jobs.
This has been going on for 30 years and is finally catching up with us. We have a bunch of idiots running authorities and the goverment. They somehow think we can cut our veins open and bleed money into the rest of the world and become healthier in the process.
This is the entire Government, NOT just the Democrats. We can't even fix the stupid stuff in Lamar County, so we have little hope of fixing Georgia or the USA.

The "assessed" value of a home rarely, if ever, is directly related to the true value of the home. It just a value the tax people use for the collection of revenue. To determine the value of your home, you need it appraised, not assessed.
Not just in Lamar, but most of the USA.
This is happening everywhere. There was a story in the Atlanta paper the other day and on Channel 2 last night about houses assessed at $100 or $200k that are selling for 70 or 80 thousand. People are not buying because they do not want the tax liability or cannot get a loan. Raisng assessments when values are falling like a stone is typical of the big government mentality which holds that all money is theirs except what they decide you can keep.

You technically don't pay taxes to your county or local government for your house, but for the property that it sits on. Although your houses assessed value is taken into consideration it has no baring on what your house is actually worth. We would all be screwed then!
Your tax bills are different than mine are.
My tax bills charge me for the land and for the buildings on the land. Add a pool, the tax goes up. Add a shed that is not portable, and the tax goes up. Blink your eyes and the tax goes up.
Then there are the tractors and cars and boats and everything else that are taxed. You pay sales tax when you buy it, you pay a value tax every year you own it.
I once stood in line behind some fool that had an old Chevy Impala and she said "my car is going up in value now because the taxes went up". Bullcrap. The taxes went up because people passed a school tax. She was too dumb to know when the Government or local paper says "this will increase the tax on a $100,000 house $10" they are not telling you your boat, car, and everything else goes up.
I'm sure most people realize an assessment is NOT an appraisal, but the assesment is supposed to be based on the true value of the property.
What a group of people need to do is ban together and sue the county and force them to value land and homes at the true vale, not what the new tax-Nazi spews. The days of $10000 an acre land in large tracts in most of Lamar are GONE. The silly spending spree is gone.

I am a business owner in downtown and my building not only doubled, but tripled. I cannot speak for anyone else, but I know the recession has had a negative impact on my business. How can the county justify increasing taxes when revenue is decreasing? Do they really expect me to be able to sell my building now and get 3 times what is was worth before the real estate market became stagnant?
When home values go up, the county is always quick to say that rising taxes are reflective of that value. Funny how declining values are not reflected now. Vampires maybe?

The amount of tax you pay is determined by the county Commissioners and the School Board not by the assessors.
The Assessors are required to fairly value property (they do not cost you taxes, the Commissioners charge you taxes).
Do not get caught up in the smoke screen that the Assessors are increasing your taxes, that can only be done by the County commissioners.
They are required by law to reduce the tax rate by the %increase of the digest or to hold 2meeting and raise taxes! This would mean no increase in taxes.
THEY DID NOT DO THAT LAST YEAR(only 5 people complained last year and they raise taxes over 15% on the people that were reassessed) AND WITHOUT COMMUNITY PROTEST, THE COMMISSIONERS AND THE SCHOOL BOARD WILL INCREASE YOUR TAXES AGAIN THIS YEAR AND EVERYONE WILL BLAME THE ASSESSORS.
WHEN and WHERE do we ALL meet to combat this? Date time and address. I cannot sell my home for the fair market value posted. My home, in fact, went down in value.

If the school board wants to save a ton of money just start parking some of the buses and make one pass through an area picking up kids from all class levels. Bus them to a central location and then transfer them to buses designated for the proper school.
This is what we did when we were in school and it saved a bunch of money in gas, equipment and drivers.
Government needs to start thinking.
If you have and issue with taxes, talk to the County Commissioners and the School Board.
If you believe that the value of your propery is higher than it should be(i.e. more than you would sell itfor), talk to the assessors.
I believe the assessors are trying to be fair, it you have a question, go talk to them.
