I just turned 62 and will begin drawing my social security in April. I'm not waiting until 66. Too many of my friends are dying early and not seeing any of their social security. My benefits will be adequate..but only because I have another monthly retirement check that takes care of all the bills.
Social security was NEVER meant to be a sole means of retirement income.
Social Security is train wreck waiting to happen. There are alot of options to protect it today, but it will require a little pain. However, our elected politicians will not address the underlying flaws because its to dangerous politically.
Instead, we are likely going to 20+ years till it nearly bankrupts us and then attempt to solve the problem with draconian measures.
Social Security is the worst department in the federal government.Bar none. If you dont think so go spend a day waiting for someone to call you to talk to a rep behind their glass cages and they must send them to monotone school to learn to talk. They need to hire big time!
Government controls it and government is responsible for it. If they don't have it when it's time for me to draw it, they better start printing some more at the mint.
Cameron - I don't care what it devalues or what it inflates. I put it in and it's mine. I worked for it and I didn't make it a donation. It was forced on me. They damn sure better have it when it's my time. Everyone should feel the same way that paid into it for so many years.
g mccall - it is precisely attitudes like yours that cause the problem to not be resolved. This is a serious matter that no elected official wants to touch because of irrational ignorance such as yours (e.g., print more money).
All the money you put in is gone. It was never put into an account. It was spent the minute the government got their hands on it.
The solution is really quite simple. We can either:
1. Raise taxes
2. Cut Benefits
3. Raise the retirement age
4. Some combination of the options above.
But in order to do this, there has to be some pain somewhere, and everyone wants somebody else to feel the pain.
By the way cameron, private accounts are not the answer. We have that ability now with 401Ks, IRAs, Roth IRAs, etc. Perhaps the government could mandate that everyone contribute to an IRA.
The government is immediately spending the any surplus that might be collected from payroll taxes. The surplus is being used to lower the federal deficit. If you take a portion of payroll taxes and place them in private accounts while continuing to pay the same benefits, the result will be a larger federal deficit and more government borrowing.

If you want to call me an irrational idiot, at least have the guts to use a name when doing so. I would respect you more for it. I can only assume that I am addressing another liberal democrat that believes raising taxes is the answer for everything. When the money runs out, tap the people for some more. Well in my opinion, that’s ignorant.
Why cut benefits on the working class while those in office secure a tidy package. I urge you to check out your elected officials (congress and senate) retirement packages.
Oh; this is a brilliant idea. Increase the retirement age so more people will never be able to use it. So they can pay more money in to inflate the above mentioned plans making them even tidier.
Have you ever heard the term (holding government accountable)? I doubt it because, this term would be alien to a tax and spend liberal. If our leadership was forced to survive on it, they would fix it damn quick. And, don’t waste your breath assuming I didn’t plan ahead and that’s all I’ve got. You would be wrong. I can survive without it but, there is millions of other that couldn’t.
People pay into a system all their life and expect a return when it’s time for them to retire. Telling them to work another 5 years and pay more taxes with less benefits may be a liberal’s way out but, it certainly is not the way of a responsible leader. What I have attempted to say is that there are NO acceptable excuses government can use to release them from the responsibilities of managing a forced retirement plan. If you think otherwise, perhaps you should redefine the term ignorance and where it fits the best.
Cambo! I think you just got put in your place, little man. Gary! You da man.
Cameron - read between the lines. There are no excuses for governments misuse, mismanagement, or whatever you choose to call it. There talk about the subject is just a first strike at the people. The people must not allow any cuts or tax increases, or anything else for that matter to their benefits.
If there is a problem, they have an opportunity to start an independent plan for begining workers now. But no; they prefer to sit around with their thumb up their butt and talk about it, likely with an idea of dropping a bomb on the people later. Well this is not acceptable and GOVERNMENT need to be held accountable.
You can stand around all day long and offer solutions - but they mean absolutely squat.
If you are new to the workforce - you should be screaming for an independent plan. If you are not - you should be holding the people you elect accountable. You can rest assured they took care of themselves.
And don't preach. If you have the answers - get elected and fix it. But if you want to do it by screwing the people over, we already have enough wealthy liars in office.
As G. Sr. said; "Read My Lips".
There are NO EXCUSES.
we have to continue social security as it is now....too many people are not able to save and invest their money...without the goverment forcing them to save, we will end up with massive nnumber of people getting to be 65 with no money.....then we will see what was very prevalent in the 50's...that being the county "poor home"....which was like nuring homes but only for the poor that had no family to care for them.....The answer to fixing the problem is simple....just enforce the payment of social security tax....make sure every person recieving salary is taxed.....we have millions of workers who do not pay in...and the one to blame are usually the employers....we need to get tough on the people who are violating this american way of life....
it is slowly going bankrupt only because everyone earning money is not paying into the system, and because the government has been using the funds for other uses
to c. frye....if you dont like my thought on s.s.,,,,you really wont like my suggestion on the national health care need...you need to liberal up some....if we can afford Iraq, then we can afford national healthcare and social security
that explains why Geo. W. is always compromises...
you right wingers always want the government out of the healthcare business but dont mind them building roads for the rich to drive on.....you want them to build roads, lakes, sewer systems, industrial parks, fire departments, police forces, ; but heaven probide that they provide health insurance or social security......you want to think we live without government interference then try to burn trash without a permit, try to built a building on your own property with out a permit, or try to sell booze on Sunday....we arent as free and you right wingers like to think....yall have made socialized medicine and communisum a bad word.....when in fact deep down all people want everyone to have equal right and benefits....

What's a right wingers. Is it anything like a hum dinger.
Maybe you could answer a question.
Considering those that have already announced their intentions, who is the next best person to lead this country?
Just Curious...
since we cant have Bill Clinton, then the next best person to lead us out of the hole we are in, is Hiliary Clinton....unfortunately she is not electable....too many will vote against her, not for her apponant.....the best person for president that is electable is Rudy Gulliani.....thats my liberal opinion
didnt answer the question about what is a right winger.....It is a person who listens to the talk radio and to fox new(really isnt news, but is 24 hr propaganda for the republician party)...they are told by these outlets that they should believe or act a certain way because it will help the country. or that it is the Christian way...And unfornantly, the people who end up supporting the right are the people who are getting hurt the most by the legistation the right passes....The poor, low income, and uneducated white or hispanic people are voting rep. and dont know that it is hurting them the most......the republican party looks after the top earners and the big business only..
I am a republican, and I wouldn’t say Hillary is unelectable. She is definitely not my choice though. I believe she could do tremendous harm to our country. Not because of being a woman, but because I feel she is dishonest with a lot of past to keep hidden. I feel she would stop at nothing to keep the past hidden too.
I think I would prefer a person that is not attached to either party. It just seems there is just too much at stake for one party to win and one to lose so, nothing ever seems to get accomplished that really amounts to anything. They get up in Washington and play politics. If they could ever really learn to work together then perhaps a lot could get done. Democrats have some good ideas. Republicans have some good ideas. If they would put those ideas together, set down together, work them together, I’ll bet they could arrive at some good solutions together. However, the democrats work on their little ideas and the republicans work on theirs. Then they battle each other to see whose idea gets the good seal of approval and the people are always at the losing end. In a nutshell, that’s kind of how I see it now.
I would like to see the U.S. fix our own problems at home before we start offering solutions to someone else.
i have never heard a republican make that much sense....i believe you must have some democrat in you somewhere....i bet you were once a liberal democract and now call yourself a republican so you arent in the minority...i bet you think you wouldnt fit in if you called yourself a dem....we got to show people in ga. that liberal is a good thing
first we got to work on that c.mcfrye....he has got to liberal up
When you referred to me as liberal I almost fell out of my chair. We (you and I), must have different meanings for the word. I think you use the term on a broad-minded scale whereas I associate it licentiously and willing to give everything away.
Just for fun – take the party test. See where you fit in.

Cameron - if you are addressing me, I have no idea what you meant with the comment about miminum wage.
to mccall....took the test 92% democract....I certainly dont want to give everything away...but I believe down deep that everyone wants a bigger government not a smaller one....we want the gov to protect us, build roads, test our drugs, pay us for not growing things, provide relief in disasters, fight our wars, build museums, build schools and educate our children......but then why in the world do we not want the gov to insure our retirement or provide us with healthcare
Cameron makes more sense on this blog than usual. I can see some of his point. However not every person is capable of investing money, and the government has taken care of them all their lives so why shouldnt it continue to do so. That is how they look at it. If the politicians we elect could only be held accountable we wouldnt be in this mess.
Why is it that the younger generation balks at paying social security taxes, when its the tax payers who are footing the bill to tke care of all of these illigitimate babies all these little ragtail girls are having. I say pay the people who worked all of their lives and contributed and let the girls having these babies worry about how they are going to get taken care of! I am also glad that peachcare for kids is becoming bankrupt. I am sick of taking care of everybody else, with food stamps and welfare. Why is it the person who works and pays taxes has to everyone else who is too lazy to work, bills. The bible says he helps those who help themselves. Stop depending on everyone of the tax payers to help you get out and work for yourselves.!
