this is an open discussion forum. keep it clean. personal attacks on private citizens will not be tolerated. you may discuss politics if you like but you may not rip or endorse specific local candidates.
blow up the gas stations....this is a legal way to steal our money....they have paid nothing more for the gass than what they paid when it was filled up........this is robbery.....this is nothing, but a way to pad their balances and increase profits while screwing the consumer...i hope they all combust in their ethanol laced flames
It's a shame that all those people are telling the oil companies that they are willing to pay what ever they ask for a gallon of gas. Instead of being in line to buy gas they should refuse to buy it. And if they can't get to work cause the gas is to high - well government can't collect any tax money. It's time to tell them all to go to hell. Government and the oil companies.
This is not "gouging". This is the free market protecting your butt from an actual shortage of fuel. If the price did not reflect the perceived threat of the hurricane/refineries we would surely be in trouble if it did in fact cause gas to become more scarce. This price is a signal to all of us to prepare for the possible *scarcity* of gasoline and use the current resources available wisely. High prices during possible or actual crisis protect citizens from being reckless with a declining supply of goods, which would lead to actual dry gas pumps or no-vacancy signs in every hotel/motel window. Plus, how can someone be told what they should charge for something they are selling. Isn't this a private buyer seller agreement.
veljust goes to show you that the price you pay isnt tied to the cost of oil......all summer long the gas companies said the price was due to the cost of oil....now oil is lower and they find a different ploy......they want to get as much as they can before McCain gets in and cuts their means of extortion......Long live Mccain......
Regardless of whether it's a private transaction or not, it seems as if Ingles is taking advantage of a difficult situation to pad its bottom line. Since such actions make it clear that the corporation isn't concerned for its customers' or this community's well-being I'm sure I'll be taking my gasoline business to a vendor who chooses to act in a way that shows that it has values that are more community oriented than mere profit extraction.
Walk or ride a bike. It costs $0 to do that. The town is small enough that one has those options. Learn to enjoy want you have near by. Who says you have to drive to Griffin to enjoy a night out. Embrace local life.
10 47 You would also be an example of the free market at work. I really hate to hear comments about profits being a bad thing (anti-capitalism)`but if you think this company acted in self interest over consumer interest use your dollars elsewhere. Refer back to the mid seventies when gas prices were kept artificially low. A shortage occurred without a scarcity of gas. Beware of government intervention. Not to say you are asking for intervention but I have heard this conversation before and it usually turns out this way.
By reports on Fox News, the government is going to prosecute those stores participating in price gouging. They want pictures of the store sign showing the cost of gas along with a picture of the store. It should be noted that any significant price jump is cause for suspicion. Get out there and start reporting the crime of price gouging and let’s find out if the government is true to its word.
Not price gauging?!?!?!?!? There is not shortage...OPEC just stated they would cut supply b/c there was such an overage....how in the hell can oil be below $100 a barrell and we pay over $4/ gallon.....and you say there is no gauging.....your idiot ass probably believes that obama can fix all this as well .....free market my ass.....hell your probably own one of the stations anyways and are padding your pockets just like ingles...i think we should all boycott ingles b/c of how they tried to cheat the community and start shopping back with the local markets the most we can again.....let them feel the pain a while too....
The sad thing is that most of the gas stations are operating tax free, just a congressional incentive for foreign owners to set up business, as soon as the tax free period ends, they transfer ownership to a family member, who starts the tax free all over again. Just a new and legal form of terrorism. Who says the guys in DC don't need thier pink slips?
That's quite alright, let Ingle's gouge customers who have made it possible for them to expand, only due to our faithful business. I guess Giant Mart can use a few more customers, they still value our business and don't take advantage.
you mean all the washington people except our washington people.....you will still vote for all our rep. and our senators....everyone gripes about wanting change but will continue voting for their rep and senators.....and you will vote for the one running for president that has been a part of washington for years.......
feel sorry for all the gas and oil companies and support offshore drilling.....cause you know that will make them happy and they will give us lower gas prices....right?.......the gas companies have to make alot of money quick, cause the mavrick mccain and palin might make them lower price or pay higher taxes....go mccain
Profits are a bad thing...if they are the cause for engaging in activity that society has deemed illegal or if they run counter to the community good (i.e.-dumping toxic waste in the community water supply or some such similar action). If the behavior of one group of businesses (i.e.-gas stations) extracts too much money from the local economy by charging an unreasonably high price for an item necessary for that economy to function, then the other business owners in the community (i.e.-restaurants and the workers they employ) suffer due to a lack of disposable income. This is detrimental to the overall economic health of the community and leads to instability at a number of levels. Due to this, price gouging is illegal.
When Ingles and other local gasoline merchants are guilty of this, the response of the community should be to right the imbalance created through engaging in legal behavior that punishes the action such as boycotting the businesses. In this case, the individual who called for the citizens of Barnesville to seek alternative forms of transportation and entertainment is dead on in his analysis. If you don't like the corporate tools who think that they can steal your money legally, spend your money at local businesses who are willing to support the values of community (or, better yet, pay off your credit cards or put the money in the bank).
"I'm sure I'll be taking my gasoline business to a vendor who chooses to act in a way that shows that it has values that are more community oriented than mere profit extraction."
I agree with you. Tell me one location that wasn't screwing the consumer and I'll take all my business there too.
I was able to take my gasoline $$$ to one of the truck stops up at the 36 interchange as a part of my typical errand running and pay less that $3.80 per gallon. While it may be credibly argued that this is still a higher price than market factors might otherwise dictate, it was still significantly less than the prices charged by local vendors.
I will be able to continue to do this with the exercise of just a little creativity and planning. Perhaps Ingles could find a way to an run an apology for its reprehensible behavior if enough of us buy our gas elsewhere.
If there was absolutely no threat to the refineries but a station, or stations, raised its prices they would soon fall back down due to competition in the market place. These prices are not completely off base. If a shortage is threatening supply and prices do not convey this message to the public (through high prices) the shortage will be certain and probably prolonged by the lack of consumer conservation. As much as I hate to pay high prices for gas, or any other goods or services, this is the way prices have to be free to rise and fall for long term stability.
It is not gouging when the commodity is scarce, it is a reflection of the demand for the resource and the actual availability of that resource to meet demand. Believe it or not, this is a natural protection in a free market from people hording and over consuming during crisis. Artificially low prices (government interference or the threat thereof) would lead to shortages because people would not respect the resources scarcity until nothing came out of the gas pump, this would be too late to start conserving.
Ingles had a hefty price on their gas but it soon came down when the competition did not follow suit. Profits drive up incentive to treat consumers honestly.
we are all unhappy with the economy, high gas prices, high crime, low house prices, low stock market, high prices of food, high employment, more illegals, more imports, no decrease in abortions(even tho there is a consverative surpreme court), increase war deaths, and higher deficits......but we will still vote for the republicans even though they have had ample time to help this problem.....when will we learn that conservatives dont help the country....they only help big business, and it dont trickle down..........we went thru all this in the late eighties with reagan and first bush...had the fall of the savings and loan industry...clinton was able to turn it around....hopefully mccain will live long enough to turn it around this time
It amazes me how many people sit in line to pick up their kids at the primary school for 20 minutes or more with their car running and the AC on. Not only is it wasteful it is hard on the engines!
Thank you for contacting my office regarding energy price gouging. I appreciate hearing from you and appreciate the opportunity to respond.
I have concerns with the potential for abuse within the oil export, gas refining and retail systems. This is why I voted during the Senate's consideration of H.R.6, the CLEAN Energy Act of 2007, for an amendment offered by Senator Kohl to amend the Sherman Act to make oil producing and exporting cartels illegal. I also voted for an amendment offered by Senator DeMint to require 60 votes in the Senate to pass any legislation that would increase the price of gasoline.
I am supportive of efforts to ensure that oil companies and gas retailers do not have the ability to take advantage of consumers. I will continue to work toward that end in the Senate.
Thank you again for contacting me. Please visit my webpage at http://isakson.senate.gov for more information on the issues important to you and to sign up for my e-newsletter.

Stations are price gouging!!! Just on the TV that Ingles has lowered their gas due to being caught. Wait to buy!!!
Reliable Mart advertises a price on the sign then when you get to the pump it's more. Read carfully as the price the sign posts is for cash only.

it's easy to tell that you don't know your politics. are they going to let you vote? maybe you should do some research first.

simple... don't buy gas... everyone buying gas at once will NOT make the price go down....
