cool weather fuels buggy days attendance...

all reports are saturday's crowd was as big as ever at parade time. what did you think?

Maybe the crowd was "big as ever at parade time" but there didn't seem to be nearly as many folks as usual during the morning hours or at the pig chase.

By the way, what will they do with the pig chase once the city turns Summers Field into a duck pond? Surely the school system isn't going to let them do that on that high dollar turf in that high dollar stadium.

the best b-days ever! well organized. best parade we have seen in many years. past few years parade was very short. can't wait till next year. the weather was custom made for a chamber event.
thanks: scott, tim, t.j., amanda and all those who were involved behind the scene.

I thought it was less crowded than usual & a number of vendors were complaining about how slow business was.

Anonymous said...

Seemed packed to me.

Thought the $10 wristband admission for the kids park was a great idea. Also liked the Craftsman Village section and and the demonstrations.

Anonymous said...

Why didn't we have anything for older kids. Like last year. The Bungee Jump was alot of fun. $10 is alot for the chamber to charge its free At Rock Springs Church twice a year and they have a bungee and alot more.

Anonymous said...

We decided against the $10 admission. That was to high for my family.

Anonymous said...

Well the Chamber had to rent the things that they had in the Kids Park and I'm sure that Rock Springs gets the bungee jump and alot of other stuff donated. So if you don't want to pay the price then go to Rock Springs twice a year and have fun for free. All I heard were great things about the Kids Parks and how it saved parents a lot of money.

Anonymous said...

Rock Springs pays for the equipment. If all you heard was positive- why are you so defensive? Last two blogs were not positive. $10 can be to high for some families. Sounds like you work with the chamber. 40 min. wait time on one ride. Could it be you tried to make money and found out a few cheap attractions didn't get it done.

Anonymous said...

It would cost ten dollars in gas to drive to rock springs

Anonymous said...

did the Chamber run the Kids Park last year? It seemed like there was a lot of different groups or people running things in previous years. Why the change?

Anonymous said...

The Chamber took over the Kids Park to try to save money for families. Before you had to pay $5 to $7 for each thing that your child wanted to do and this would help save families money. I heard one parent say that $30 for three children to play unlimited time was alot better than $24 for them to do one thing. This particular person said they could easily have spent $100 in the past years. And no I do not work for the Chamber just a parent of two myself that can not afford to go to Buggy Days or any where and spend $100 a day for my children to have fun. I do however think that they should look into getting things for the older children to do.

Anonymous said...

3 Times 7 =21 not $24

Anonymous said...

Oh, I'm sorry my bad I mad a little addition error. So anyways $21 is better than $100

Anonymous said...

Hey what happened to the High School Rodeo the weekend before Buggy Days this year?

Anonymous said...

Did not even miss the rodeo this year. I think we are about rodeoed out for a while. Can't we think of something different beside a rodeo every 6 months. I know my business was asked to sponsor again but I finally had to say not this year. My business neighbors feel the same way. Please stop expecting a few business to carry the load for everything that goes on here. My business has never generated a sale from any sponsorships of events here. I don't mind doing a little every so often but not all the time please.

When all is said and done- It has nothing to do with saving kids families money! The Chamber wanted to make "MONEY" and in doing so Kicked a Chamber Member Out. A local chamber member had done the event for 4 years. Funny the bid process you used wanted all kinds of things for the BBQ Blues festival. But ended up getting a few cheap items from out of town. So much for this Chamber referring & using only chamber members! We gave a honest bid for Buggydays that would have added more but the chamber got greedy and used out of town stuff again. You keep bringing up $100 but say you would never spend it on your kids to have fun. What do you spend it on: Street Dances and beer? You say you don't work for the chamber but the info you know says you work with them or know someone who does. Some families can't afford even $10 as stated in another blog-But they had a larger variety last year. It included Stuff for all age groups. On average more families had more choices. No one used a all day arm band for the whole day so if they wanted to do just a $5 or $7 atrraction you over charged them. We both have the interest of Lamar County in mind but through a certain Committe member we let the kids down.

Anonymous said...

Okay 9:26, what's your problem? I think the Chamber actually listened to the parents and were willing to go out on a limb and try something new to save money. I heard great things about it. People loved the fact that they could get an arm band, stay a while and come back later if they wanted. I didn't see long lines at all. There were more than 10 things to do in the park this year - all for one price! The Chamber tried to work with the organizations that rented booth space in prior years. They tried to help those non-profit organizations or civic clubs earn money in other ways. I bet you are not a non-profit organization or a civic club, but a business...Try doing something for your community and support Barnesville!!! The Chamber did a great job this year. They worked hard and tried to listen to the people and bring what they wanted - there is nothing wrong with that! This coming from a parent.

Anonymous said...

I agree with 11:44. And no I do not spend my money on beer or cigarettes. I do not drink or smoke and my kids do have fun. Also, if children had just wanted to do one attraction they did not have to purchase an armband they could have just paid for that one atraction.

Anonymous said...

Whats your problem? Can't handle the truth. In a free market place consumers deserve a chance to chose how they spend hard earned money. We have volunteered our time for 18 year in Lamar County. The kids deserve the best! Yes we are a business and we paid to be in every Buggydays Event we were in. We started our business because our kids didn't get a Rock Wall every year. What happened to the out of town one this year? You say all you heard was great things reread all blogs including your own about having stuff for older kids. The Chamber had a monopoly. They set themselves up to live up to having the biggest kids park ever. We all know 6 =6 Inflatables and the other 4 doesn't =What was at last years kids park. Also I think the scout only charged $2or$3 last year for some activities! It still boils down to money. Yes-If it was all about saving the parents money; why didn't it become free after the chamber made enough to pay for it. The Chamber got greedy didn't they!

Anonymous said...

My wife worked 15 hour days last year and still found time to help with Buggy Days set ups. Thank you so much for showing how little you know and avoiding the main issues.

Anonymous said...

No long lines according to the paper 40min for one ride. Maxium capacity for another 2 at a time. But had twenty kids and unsupervised at one point Sun.

Anonymous said...

Another problem is the 10 employees of Lamar County that you put out of work for 2 day. They all say thanks for saving people money and making it yourself.

Anonymous said...

If it was so great an ideal why did you change it so they could pay to do just one thing. Sounds like the chamber just wanted a monopoly. Could have had it both ways but chamber got greedy! Didn't do anything to promote a local business. One of the main reasons for the chamber.By the way I don't think I would be insulting the local business that make up most of your membership. They pay for most of Buggydays anyway. I spend alot of money with them and I think they would side with me.

Anonymous said...

to 2:38 p.m. I don't understand your word "siding". What are you talking about? I didn't realize that anyone sided with anyone. The parents wanted something cheaper and the Chamber gave it to them. You have anger issues. Why do you want to try and bring down a new idea? Why don't you volunteer your time instead of bitching about what went on? Get involved. Do you even live in Lamar County?

Anonymous said...

2:04 - if you think it's all about money, then why don't you let the Chamber use your things for free? Maybe you and the Chamber can donate some of the money to a good cause. Or are you just full of hot air like your jumpy things?

Anonymous said...

321 I have ask about the chamber donating the proceeds 1 st are they full of greed. Read all I have said we have lived here probably alot longer than you . we have been involved. learn to read.We have raised our kids here and been involved with more than just the chamber. Your statement is true I am full of hot air. But I don't keep avoiding the issues.

Anonymous said...

By the way 321 bring your check book and see who's full of hot air.

Anonymous said...

I still don't understand what the problem is...why should I bring my checkbook? I'm not the one fussing about it - you are. I don't see a problem with offering parents an option that's never been offered before. The Chamber still did the parents of this are a great service!!!

Anonymous said...

321 you are the one that said I was full of hot air and should back it with my money all i suggested is you do the same or are you full of something. Go back and have a kindergardener read all the blogs to you- the chamber offered less; made alot of money and avoid all the main issues. They want us to erect a monument to them. They would have you believe that it was about saving families money. Funny they brag about how much they made at BBQ & Blues. Show up and get informed. I was at the meetings.

Anonymous said...

559 do you know what a monopoly is? It means "NO" Choices. So what favor did the chamber give you.

Anonymous said...

I would like to start by saying I'm sorry for some of the things I have said to some bloggers. I have been trying to inform you of this years situation concerning our kids park. My main goal has been that our kids deserve the best!!! I am fighting for every kid that has grown up in Barnesville over the last 30+ years of Buggydays. They do not have the same chances as kids from bigger town to see stuff like a Spider Bungee Jump or Rock Wall at the local mall or outside a theater or have a bowling alley or skating ring.I'm fighting for all the parents that said they were parents in some of your blogs kids too. Again OUR KIDS deserve the BEST. They got cheated this year. Did they have fun; yes -I'm sure they did. Did any of them get a Moon Blast, learn to flip, or say that was "sweet" "awesome" or the greatest thing I have ever done. I do not think it was said as much this year. Did anyone hear a "sceam" of excitement and a kid fly 25+ feet in the air. Answer NO. This is sad. How many kids made it to the top of the Rock Wall for the 1st time Sat. None it didn't show up that day. My main goal is to tell you that certain chamber member sold out to greed and our kids did not get the "best"! Anyone who says they did need to only ask their own kid. On the subject of the $10 arm band you get what you pay for and what you paid for was not the best. Argue good times or bad times $10 is always going to be to much. So we cheat our kids under the pretence we are saving families money and brag at chamber meetings how much we made. Very Sad. My kids deserved the best. They didn't always get a Rock Wall-If I'm not mistaken it only came twice when they were growing up here. Since we got in the business -it had been here every year. We added the Bungee Jump the second year and more every year since. Buggy Days is like a homecoming is not true in my case. I live here 365 days a year and IT IS My HOME everyday and has been since I was a kid. I raised 2 kids here also. We have been involved with more than the chamber not like some people keep trying to inply. I'm never going to be the citizen of the year my business requires up to 80 hours some weeks. But in my business -I go to more festival than any know it all -how great things were this year. Give credit were it is due. Buggy Days claims to be a top 20 event and it is. The kids area fell to a bottom 20.They had less than any event I have been to this year. Again sad our kids deserve the best. I also think until something better comes along The Jumpie thing that I was compared to as being -full of hot air will remain the best, most exciting closest thing to a roller coaster ride that can come to a small town. So Why wasn't it part of the kids park. Again ou kids deserve the best. Once again greed is the answer. I have stated I am a business and some people tried to make that sound like a bad thing. I had 10 Lamar County People lose 2 Days work - In hard times that is the bad thing. Back to prices 20 years ago you could do a moonwalk for 3min for $3. When we did it last year the price per min. was 50% less. When the Rock wall came for the 1st time it was $5 we still charge $5. Bungee was $7 every year but the 1st.Prices have gone up on everything -we have lowered or stayed the same. I understand the cost and wish it could be done for less. The Chamber could have come up with a better solution but again one member saw Dollar $igns. TIM you did a great job for your 1st year. You will never make everyone happy. But unlike you I hope and me some of your committee member let you down for Dollars and I don't think it was the person in charge of the kids area. We both want what is best for Barnesville. The Street Dance was a good ideal. The beer sales was not-it will alway, always have to much chance for bad things to happen. The Craftsman Village was one of the best ideals I have seen or heard about at any other festival. Great Job on that. Your parade was very good but my favorites of all times will always be seeing my dad lead the parade carrying the flag. Many close seconds with my kids in the parade. I'm sure this will go down as alot of people's favorite for the same reason. We are a small town and I hope we never lose that quality. Buggydays is looked forward to by almost everyone who lives here. It brings in out of towners and is a tradition. The torch has been pasted to you Tim -by Dick who did a great job for all preceeding Buggy Days. Again you will never make everyone happy but If you love Barnesville as much as I think you do -you will do the right thing next year. Make it the best and keep the greedy member out of the equation. We could have easily been charged a fee for the Spider Bungee Jump and Rock Wall and rented the stuff to the chamber for half of what you paid for it. But the commitee decided to go with a monopoly situation and it was made at BBQ & Blues. You Could give all 10 pieces away and we would still do great with the Bungee Jump. That tells me if you can give it away and people would still pay -it must be the best. Our kids deserve the best. So work with your local members and when asking for bids compare the best to what you got. It can be a win win for eveybody.

The choice I had was to either pay $10 for many attractions in the park or pay seperately. That's the choice I was talking about. Since it was $10 to have an arm band and there were more than 10 things to do in the park, that's less than $1 for each. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that's a good deal. I'm not familiar with what the Chamber does at BBQ & Blues, but from what I've seen so far, I'm happy with the kid's park. I don't know what meetings you are talking about. The bottom line is - I'm fine with the Kids Park and I hope they do it again next year. For a single parent it was a good thing.

Anonymous said...

Maybe they shpuld have gotten Monroe Academy to sponsor it like they did BBQ & Blues festival. Now that is really promoting local business!!!

Anonymous said...

1019 It sounds like the guy apologized to you in his 855 blog. Did you not read that. He said over and over he wanted the best for all the kids. Sounds like you just want to down him. The point is alot of older kids didn't have things to do. What choice did they have. Sounds like he willing to work with the chamber and has put the ball in their court. By saying $10 for 10 things is rocket science on your part doesn't address all people choices does it.

Anonymous said...

Who's this guy wanting the best for our kids lets tar and feather him. I'd much rather know my kids are partying at the cemetary. Next thing he might want my kids to go to college and even make good grades. Works 80 Hours a week not for my kids a little hard work would kill them. I would rather they learn to not want the best. Settle for less.

Anonymous said...

This is the stupidest blog i have ever read. The kids could care less, as long as they had something to do. Im sure they are not still sitting around bitching about their jumpy ride not being fun.

Get a grip people. Grow up!

Unknown said...

12:18 Thats because Rock Springs is a non profit Christian organization that they had it donated. It is tax deductable under charity contributions. Buggy Days is not tax deductible for donations and not non-profit. Some on e had to pay.
It was actually a better deal.

Anonymous said...

Martha you wrote 4 lines and they makes no since. Rock Springs Pays for the equipment in blog 634. Yes they are a church but Buggydays is sponcered by the chamber - they don't have to show a profit and are supose to promote Barnesville. Give the name of the person at the chamber that paid for this stuff- I Bet it was paid with a chamber ck. I'm guesing the church paid with a church ck that used offerings or maybe a member paid for it but the only way it was a tax deduction for anyone would be if the equipment was donated then the busines could take a deduction or to the person that wrote the church a ck. The church didn't get a tax deduction . You are totally confused. As for the chamber Do they pay sales tax on the amount they paid to the companies and the sales or on collections after they pay for the equipment? Wonder if they might need audited with a Tax professional like you keeping all this straight. So buggydays pays for equipment with I'm asume the chamber's money. I pretty sure the chamber is non profit to. if not who owns this company. Can I buy stock.

605 They did have something to do. Didn't your kids get an invite to the cemetary party.

Anonymous said...

605 is it a jumpy ride or a jumpy thing.

Anonymous said...

605 If you don't know what it is how do you know what the kids are b- about.

Anonymous said...

605 who are you that you don't know what your kids like. Half the things that could be called jumpy things fall under the 10 things that was in the kids park. is that the jumpy things you are talking about or are you mad that this guy wants more for you kids and mine than you do???

Anonymous said...

605 Kids could care less? Good parents should know beter. Most kids have a favorite food. Ask them Pizza or Spinach. Favorite TV show-Hannah Montana or Days of our lives. Crocs or Penny Loafers. Pretty Pink for girls or Blue for boys or dull brown. Kids do have a strong since of what they like. Seems like you could care less! If it requires me to grow up and not care about my kids I would rather stay a kid. But thats what this is about our kids. As far as the kids not b- about a jumpy thing parents like you didn't give them a choice.

Anonymous said...

My momma said stupid is as stupid does. Means your blog didn't allow it to stay the stupidest long did it.

Like I said before, im sure the kids have already forgot about buggy days...it is you dumb ass parents that want to fuss about something. You didnt have to go to buggy days and you didnt have to pay the ten dollars. It was your choice.

Anonymous said...

I know that's right 10:43. You hit the nail on the head. The kids have forgotten about Buggy Days and moved on to other things. Put your big girl panties on and deal with it.

You know what, some people in this county just amaze me, the county could mail you a $500 rebate check and you would bitch because you had to walk to the mailbox and get it!

You got that right and then they would bitch because they had to use their gas to drive to the bank and cash it.

I'm single and I would not want to bring a kid into this world unless I could give them the best. I plan on going to college and working hard to be sure I can do this.

Anonymous said...

Well with my $500 I can't drive to the bank- The nice police man took my license when I couldn't walk the straight line.

Anonymous said...

Did I read it right seemed packed to me or did he say a six pack for me? had one to many at the street dance.

Anonymous said...

What kind of parent would say the kids could care less as long as they have something to do. Go play in the street is an old saying - thats something to do -look for food in a garbage dump as many kids in third world countries have to do- is something kids can do. The point is if you don't want the best for your kids maybe the problem is you. Other things for our kids to do are Drugs , drinking, droping out of school, having sex , joining gangs, stealing, killing, extreme yes but read the blog on the cemetary. An uncle stated it very well. Our kids need the whole comunity to help raise our kids- when we as parents don't give a darn ( insert a stronger word here) but kids may read this also; kids will find something to do.We must draw a line in the sand. Our kids deserve the best goes further than the kids park but its a good start. Have you talked to them lately? Taken them to Rock Springs Church or any other local church even if it takes $10 to get there. Read a book to them. Got involved in the rec. dept. Gone fishing. Join the Scouts. Some one else said the best things in life are free. I know I was blessed with two great kids. Sit down and watch an Andy Griffin rerun. We live in a small town and it has great values but our kids deserve the best and we should never settle for less. To the uncle do not give up on your nephew. i will be praying for him with the love of his family it is never to late to change.

Anonymous said...

The point is that buggy days happens once a year and you are upset because your kids didn't get the best..in your eyes. Get a grip. You have a loose screw. Most people do want the best for their kids. And yes my kids go to church, I read books to them, they have had the very best that I could give them.....and you know what, sometimes they were disappointed when Santa didn't bring them everything they wanted....but guess what that is life. They need to know that life is hard and they will not always have everything handed to them. But don't dare get on here and say that I do not care about my kids because buggy days was not a big deal. You don't know me or my family. There are far more important things to get upset about. Buggy Days kids park was not one of them. Like I said, it is over and done with and if YOUR kids are still upset about the lack of choice then you have gone wrong somewhere down the line. And one more thing...its not up to everyone else to raise your kids. Thats what is wrong with this world. Why dont you go out and buy them all the jumpy things you can find and put them in your back yard. Maybe that will help them out and they wont be so traumatized over buggy days.

Anonymous said...

One more thing. My kids turned out great. They have jobs and are in college. They never got in trouble with the law nor did they join any gangs. They never got into drugs, but i'm sure that drank at a party now and then....and what is so great about this is that they grew up here in B'ville, went to buggy days every year, and as long as they got a bottle of colored sand they were happy.

An inch is an inch til someone changes the ruler then it is 2.54cm. A kids park is a kids park until its not about the kids- then it is a kids industrial park were kids work long hours for low pay in sweat shops. In a global economy we buy stuff from other countries made with kids sweat. In my world I want my kids to play in the best kids park we can have .Please bring back the best stuf for our kids.

Your kids must be spoiled brats! Or are you the spoiled brat? Lady,
grow up. If you are so concerned, build a skating rink or bowling alley or something...then you can charge $10 for all day fun. Or move to a big town where you can make sure your kids have something to do 24/7.....better yet, why dont you go play in the street!

Raising "everyone's" kids is not my problem...that is the whole point. Parents need to take there own responsibility. It is not society's place to make sure you have a good kid and he grows up happy. 9:23 You have to be a Democrat with that “it takes a village” BS.

It all comes down to having morals. That is what is wrong today. It is not taught at home, in the school and I don’t have a lot of confidence that the churches are doing it either. Everybody walks around not wanting to hurt anybody’s feelings instead to telling them there actions are not acceptable.

9:11 I am going to assume that your comment is directed to me which was 9:52. Your right I am forced to pay taxes to be a law abiding citizen. I don’t have kids so therefore I did not home school them nor do they run around naked. But I have yet to figure out how a doctor and a store help raise your kid with morals. Oh, and sorry I have never bought a lottery ticket in my life. But I am glad that your kids got the Hope maybe they can learn to spell Community since you rely on it so much.

9:35 PM I am sure your kid looked funny anyway with Billy Bankston cutting his hair. Sorry you think I am a hermit or monk, actually I am quite active in the community. The answer to the question is how the child was brought up all along formed who the person is, it is not how you treat one incident in how you solve the problem. I too would pray for him, and you better figure out a way to teach him to pray for himself. Because that is where his true guidance should be from.

9:52 (above) You can keep trying to place this responsibility on everyone, but it still comes down to parents taking responsibility and giving consequences when something is done wrong and I am not saying after they are 10 or 12 or teenagers it starts at infancy. It is called Parenting.

1047 My problem was never with you! It seems like you have said everything i have but with different terms or phrases. I 'm sorry that half my blog is not going in as typed . you will have to do the best you can with the spelling or just ignore them. Billy did give some funny hair cuts - a rats tail for one; but he was here a long time too and is still missed. Billy cut 4 generations of my families hair. How do you explain it if one sibling becomes a preacher and his brother a hell raiser. How can some kids come from a broken home become doctors and others murderers. If it was only the parents that influence a kid these things would not happen. I had a teacher tell me how they could do it all they had degrees and such. Well this teacher has a kid for 1 hour a day with 20-30 kids in class is going to make a diference if the parent doesn't care. No but together they stand a better chance.A parent is #1 but I'm glad I had backup from parents teachers, coaches and preachers. Grandparents aunt and uncles. I have said the chamber should be held to the same standards. Selling beer is wrong. If everybody is for it what hapened to all the honky tonk and beer joints. They died a long time ago. They want to know what hapened this time . I know I was praying nothing. But next year I hope you can ask me the same question and give the same answer but what wil you say to me if you Husband or wife 'son or daughter Mom or dad are kiled by someone drinking . Its not that you got away with it this year watch the old ads on tv . UREAL # KILLED BY DRUNK DRIVERS EVERYDAY. What are you going to ask me then. Again call up MADD and brag give your name you are so proud. Again this was never about you 1047!

About taxes I'm glad to pay my share (not more) and do not feel forced to do so. I drive on very good roads, my kids did get a good education not great but with parents & teachers working together they will be able to make a living doing anything they set their minds to. Even if they did not I did. My parents paid taxes too. We live in a great Country- we can choose to live anyplace do anything or do nothing and the government will use my hard eaned gladly paid tax $. But they need to make parents acountable . Big Business and Politicians acountable. Please get out and vote.

WOW 735 you put me in my place. you brought up some very good points. Since I don't know you or your family> i assume you have grand kids. Your passion for this kids park humbles me. ON the other hand if you don't have grand kids why are you so passionate about something that does not personally involve you. Could it be you are fniancially rewarded by the chamber. A stock holder in this Fantastic corp. So I would hope if your kids are grown its not a big deal. or something is wrong. The other reason is you were traumatized by a jumpy thing as a kid. I will not go into other possibilities. So which is it . Or have you just taken your head out of the little bottle of colored sand and wanted to put your 2cents in. The only price to play in this kids park is $10. I'm sorry we didn't have a blog when your kids were little or you could have been warned about oxygen deprevation for burying your head in the sand so long. Why wouldn't your kids go to bdays every other year. you act like its not special. The braves for years were lousy -not many fans but they start winning and the real fans can't get in. If your kids didn't think it was special and more inportantyou didn'y why did you go? To much fiction on you part!

You are an idiot. Again you have totally missed the point. It is no big deal. Thats what I have been saying. You are the one that acts like your kids were so deprived. If buggy days was not good enough for your kids YOU NEED TO GET OVER IT! Take them to six flags or Disney. You have way too much time on your hands if you have nothing better to complain about.
