Sprint Nextel Corp. said Friday that it plans to eliminate about 4,000 jobs, reduce use of outsourced services and contractors, eliminate more than 4,000 third-party distribution points and close about 125, or 8 percent, of its company-owned retail locations.
The Reston, Va.-based wireless communications provider's Web site lists 10 Sprint retail stores in the Atlanta area. The company didn't specify the effect of the cuts or closings on its Atlanta-area operations.
In a release, Sprint (NYSE: S) said it expects the actions to reduce labor costs by an annualized rate of $700 million to $800 million by the end of 2008.
The company said it expects to complete the job cuts in the first half of the year. The cuts will include management and non-management positions throughout the company.

The merger between Sprint & Nextel was much more painful than the either company imagined. They cut 5,000 jobs in 2007 and another 4,000 this year.
There biggest problem is subscriber retention. They have the highest churn rate of all the national wireless carriers. Unfortunately, this is due to customer NO-Service & reducing head count is not going to fix that problem.
this is what is happening to the usa now. we have a stock market and import economy and way to many illegals sending money out and not paying tax. almost everyone that used to be middleclass is in debt and most of us cant afford to take our kids to the doctor or heat our houses. the solution is to spend money the broke government gives the broke people. the soultion to WW2 was save bnd grow food at home and recycle and tough it out. the soultion by our president at 911 was spend spend and keep on spending. the solution to social security is the stock market. the solution to labor is illegal aliens. the solution to a busted economy that got that way by to much spending and to much illegal workers and to much import is to spend more of what the govertnment and middle class dont have.
