ems in crisis here?....

care ambulance is moving its supplies to atlanta, according to several close to the situation.

you can read more here or in this week's print edition of the herald-gazette.

have you or someone you know had to deal with the ems lately? were you satisifed? did you have patient care or response time concerns? were there billing issues?

lamar county taxpayers pay out huge sums to offer this service which is abused by some (mostly not taxpayers) who call emts to their homes for headaches or to treat childrens' minor colds, fevers etc.

how do you feel about this?

does barnesville-lamar county need to start planning for its own hospital and ems operation?

That's something that should have been done long ago. It can be 100% funded from federal funds if its need can be justified.

It would have complimented Gordon College. Future local health care, emergency room, possible research money and jobs.

However, there are so many people that can't see beyond a week. Now that's vision for you.

We don't need a hospital but we certainly need to be able to call an ambulance during an emergency. It's a shame the no pays force the taxpayers to subsidize the service.

ems units are as vital and needed part of government as police, teachers, firemen, and politicians...we should not even try to do without them.....what ever the cost to the county, it iw worth it,,,,and we should not try to blame the poor for the cost...if you do not think the poor pay sales tax, you are crazy...they pay taxes like every one else....maybe not property tax, but if you want to eliminate property tax and increase sale tax....go to it...maybe we need to eliminate tax breaks on farm lands, or historical homes, or antique cars....

pres bush signed a gun bill today that lets the government give up 1.5 billon dollars to make it easy for gun dealers to check on mental status of buyer.....why not put the law in effect but make the gun dealers pay for the check system.....would make guns more expensive but that may be a good thing....and the 1.5 billion could be sent to rural counties to helf with the ems system

charging the gun buyers more money will cost the republicans votes. we all have to subsidize the cost of criminal checks in taxes so some can have guns to protect us from tyranny.

What the hell do you mean about the EMS system being abused by non-tax payers. That sounds like an opinion to me, without an ounce of fact to back it.

Could you show the statistics, Walter?

Walter doesn't publish facts, just opinions. You know what they say about opinions? He tells the blogers to play nice and then he fans the flames. As my pastor said: If somethings on fire, would you throw water on it or gasoline?"

so you are saying it is ok for the government to help out the gun sellers and the gun buyers......but the repubicans would want to help out the sick people......ok for gov. to help out the big drug co. but not help out the little guys who cant afford to buy meds.....we have really got our priorities screwed up

I am a police officer and I have responded to these call's with ems. If someone shove's these people they want to be checked out by the ems.So take it easy on walter. Iknow for a fact what he is saying is true.I agree with you that we need ems. Maybe there should be a penalty for people who abuse the 911 system.

The gun dealers did not make the law so why should they have to pay for it? Something like that could put our friend "bone" out of business. I wish that girl in the ga mtns would have had a gun. If so she could have easly defended herself against a man with nothing but a asp.

"EMS abuse" is common throughout the country, not just Lamar county & I'm not sure any community has learned how to effectively deal with it. It is just one more symptom of the health care issues the country faces.

I do not think having our own EMS operation will be any more efficient or less expensive than contracting out to a company like Care. Creating our own would require a huge capital expense for purchasing vehicles & supplies. Then we would need to hire & train a staff & maintain the vehicles. While there may be some government grants available to offset some of the capital expenditures, the taxpayers will still be paying for the day to day expenses. I don't see how this would be cheaper or better than using a contract company.

you would'nt have the EMS problem if you took all these FAT SLOBS that sit around all day watching that COW OPRA and stuffing their gut with potato chips and cokes and told them to go haul their own fat ass to the hospital everytime they had a gas attack or a headache

Anonymous 8:25 AM,

You certainly meet the qualification requirements of a dumb ass redneck. It wouldn't suprise me to find out that you just painted a self made picture of yourself and that you are pissed because you had to haul your own ass to the hospital because you didn't know the number to 911.

I have a question if the county pays a subsity for the ambulance service to be here, why was my bill so high. I was charged 1100.00 to be taking to the hospital.

with a national health care, we would be having this discussion....everyone would be entitled to not only free healthcare, but free rides

Walter G.,

I'd like to take this time to thank you for a wonderful newsaper and for getting the blog going again. I realize there are two online news sources but the powerful combination of Internet for those who don't like to read lengthy articles and printed media for those that do is unbeatable!

Please do not let the little children discourage you or affect your actions. They will put things on your blog to try to drive people away or to force you to turn it off.

Most of us know who they are and can ignore the immature way they attack you and the great things you do for this community. If you weren't number one they wouldn't try so hard to go after you.
