former teacher of the year testifies to no avail...

mary fletcher (left) testified today she bought $20 worth of marijuana from mandrickas buckner (right) at a stop n' cop drug market on kate court in barnesville january 11.

buckner was found not guilty by a jury after only brief deliberation - a severe blow in a case law enforcement thought was airtight.

the drug buy and her subsequent arrest ended fletcher's career in education here.

more where you would expect it at lamar's definitive news source

What a crock of shit. Let me get this right....you have him on tape, a woman pointed him out and said she bought it from him yet he is found not guilty???? what idiots were on the jury?

Maybe that's why the DA doesn't try cases. He can't even win the simple ones.

Only in Lamar. Milam won't prosecute because of this kind of stuff. If I ever committ a crime I hope to be tried in Lamar County

Maybe the state needs to look into jury tampering

I'm not a lawyer so feel free to put me in my place on this.

Isn't it possible for a jury to find someone innocent just because they feel the law that the individual broke was unconstitutional or just plain dumb in the first place.
I'm not saying that this is the case here but I believe the jury has this power so that the law can be put into check if it oversteps the peoples idea of what is a crime.
Does anyone know if this is true?

jarad -- it's called "jury nullification" when a jury votes its feelings on the law, rather than the case....and the power to change laws lies not with juries, but is supposed to lie with voters and the legislators they elect.

Maybe if we spent less time prosecuting drug crimes and more educating our kids, Ms. Fletcher, who was an amazing teacher, would still be teaching.

Whos rights wer violated? NOBODYS! Where is the victim ? there is no victim! It would be a worse crime for her to be DUI! She broke the law, She should get a ticket but she didnot violate any bodys rights, She put nobody in danger. A speeder puts more people in danger than she did!

Another broken feather in our illustrious DA's cap!

Of course the war on drugs has been about as effective as the war in Iraq...lots of money spent & little to show for it.

this makes me want to puke just what kind of county did i move to?
this teachers life is shot and the slime bags that she bought the drugs from walks?wholy shi@# what kind of people were on the JURY?

I believe it is the jury's duty to look at the evidence, without bias, and make a judgement based on the facts. The fact is Ms. Fletcher admitted to a crime, Mr. Buckner did not. It was her decision that ended her career, no matter how great of a teacher she was, its a shame. But obviously the jury could not convict Mr. Buckner based on the evidence presented, so it seems that the court system does work, the jury did not automatically assume that Mr. Buckner was guilty until proven innocent- and I think that is great.

Can someone tell me what D.A. stand for in our county?

He was on video tape and there were wittnesses....how much more evidence do you need? I just cant get over it. Who was on that jury????

Anyway, im sure it wont be long before he is caught again.

As bad as I hate to I agree with T.J. If you throw his rights out the window yours will go behind it.

thomas jefferson said"I believe it is the jury's duty to look at the evidence, without bias, and make a judgement based on the facts" the problem with that is its lamar county, and the juriors most likely cant read!

So Mr. Jefferson, please enlighten us with your knowledge of this great reasoning of yours. If someone is caught red handed and gets arrested, but that same person does not admit to doing the CRIME they should just let them off.
Are we not lucky to have less people like you around?

You have got to be this guys buddy.
I bet you stand out on the street and sell drugs right along with him. It's the only explaination for your posting.
WOW

Kissy Kissy, I do not understand why people can not respond to the opinions of others on this blog without personal attacks, but I will explain my reasoning to you (and just to clarify, I am not buddies with this man, nor do I participate in any illegal ativities). The explanation for my posting is that Mr. Buckner did not admit to the crime so he therefore had the right to a trial by jury (I am not even stating that he was innocent, merely that he had the right to a fair trial).
I do not know all the details of the case and I have not seen the video nor heard the evidence. All I said in my previous comment was that apparently the jury (not I) felt that there was not enough concrete evidence.
For instance, humor me if you will Kissy Kissy, lets say the tape shows Mr. Buckner going to the car and then returning- as I believe Mr. Geiger reported. If the jury could not see the exchange of the illegal substance, whats not to say that Mr. Buckner was not merely saying hello to a former teacher? And I again have no idea whether of not he was guilty, he may very well have been. If he was, then he now has a second chance to do the right thing. If he was not, then the justice system works. That is all my comment meant, I hope that this clears it up for you. Thank you for your time and have a great day.

lets stop arresting drug dealers until the drug problem gets so bad that even the jury participants want to stop them

I said...

Look around - it's already got that bad. Government just won't do nothing about it.

We can get rid of an evil dictator in a foreign country but we can't get rid of the drug dealers or those bringing drugs in or producing them in our own.

It's all about money.

Mary Fletcher is such a wonderful lady. Mary Fletcher is such a wonderful teacher. I am so grateful my children had the opportunity to learn from her. Not only is she a great educator, but she gave good hugs. Her smile put children at ease. She was fair. She was patient and kind. Her students loved her. God bless you, Mary Fletcher.

dont forget "and a dope smoker" and someone helping put money in the pockets of drug dealers!!!a criminal is a criminal it doesnt make any difference what you do or DID for a living

The Government has tried for years (over a hundred actually) to stop the flow of "Drugs" in the U.S. We have spent billions of dollars on this idea of prohibition and have not made a single bit of headway.
The only thing that has changed in America because of "Drug" prohibition is our right to privacy and drug dealers willing to kill for the large profits that can be made from these illegal transactions.
People will always take drugs and people will always be willing to meet their drug needs.
Why not let the Drug Lords be minimized to who can creat the best way to get around drug tests.
Remember that just because it is legal dope doesn't mean that your employer can't fire you for it. Drug prices would drop, reducing crime, and employers would increase drug testing. This is the only way to help minimize drug use, PRIVITIZE IT!! Force Drug Lords into being pushers for Clean Pee Pee. How many turf wars will be fought over good, clean TINKLE?
This idea of legalizing drugs goes further than the desire of some citizens to legally smoke weed.
Prohibition is a great excuse for growing government and maximizing drug use.
Is it possible for our Government to learn from its mistakes?
Remember Alchohol Prohibition in the 1920's?
Great idea, worked very well.
