the nature of blogging...

having presided over this online endeavor since its inception, i have learned an awful lot about human nature as it impacts the blogosphere. i wish people would own up to their posts but the vast majority will not.

i had no inkling friday afternoon's post regarding the hiring of amanda rose to be executive director of the chamber of commerce would generate the traffic and venomous personal attacks it has generated.

still, it proved that there are some raw emotions out there regarding the chamber and, in the long run, it is probably good to get them out in the open. some of you would do well to remember chamber officers and board members are volunteering for the community on their time. and, i have never known the chamber to turn away a volunteer. your skills could be put to good use.

as far as my personal rules for deleting posts, i try to let the blog be as open as possible. i kill all posts with outright racial slurs. i made an exception on the black heritage festival video thread because of the nature of the video. i try to ride herd on the obscenities as much as possible.

although your right to free speech does not extend to this blog, i try to respect it and grant as much latitude as possible.

if you have questions or concerns, feel free to post them. you may also call me directly at 770.358.NEWS or contact me via e-mail at news@barnesville.com.

one final suggestion: think before you post!

Stupid is as stupid does. What the response shows is that a large portion of Barnesville was born in the shallow end of the gene pool and cannot get out.

I understand the point you are trying to make Walter, but at the same time, I do not understand letting defamitory post that are totally off topic stay on the blog.

My only criticism is post that fail to pertain to the subject of the blog topic, being posted. Sticking to the subject, in my opinion, can keep the off color remarks from surfacing.

Some people don't understand how difficult and time consuming it is to moderate a public access forum.

It's pretty easy to sit back and hand out time consuming orders to other people and tell them how we think they should run their show, but when they are giving us something free we should refrain from being too critical.

As for the quality of people in this area, it is a cross section of the rest of the world. Unmoderated blogs and open forums are always a mess. If you don't like to see what you see the best approach is to not open the page.

Perhaps 7:13 would volunteer to sit at a computer all day editing what people write, pay for the bog, and disclose to use who they are. After all, that is what they expect of Walter.

I learned a lot on this blog. I learned that in the begining God created Dane, and Dane did all the rest. I learned the Chamber is a really hot topic, which must mean it made at least a few people upset.

The only thing I don't know is who the heck Dane is.

8:52 pm HEY, FREE SPEECH IS GREAT ISN'T!!!! You and I can still say what we think!!

Looks like some of the other posters on here share my opinion, that is what make this forum so interesting. Do I expect Walter to do anything (reading from some of the stuff that he puts in his paper)...NO. But it still does not hurt for me to express my opinion here and to see how others think.

P.S. It is called a conversation!

And I completely agree with 8:37 pm. It's people that completely go off in Lala land getting their agenda across that I have the problem with.

i can't believe you don't know who dane is. he is the one and only, he is the man

I'm a blog dummy and admit it. I just heard about some of the recent ones and decided to check it out.

I guess my question is why are the posts allowed to be anonymous? People are much more inclined to be polite and not lean towards defamitory comments or make false "factual" statements if they know they will be identified, even if it is just with a computer nickname.

Some of the comments on the Chamber of Commerce topic remind me of SLAM books that kids used to keep. There was sometimes a kernel of truth in a few of the comments, and a LOT of tall tales and twisted thoughts.

Reading through those CoC comments, it appeared to me that many of the comments were made by the same few people posting over and over trying to get their slanted opinions across. At least kids' SLAM books had a handwriting to identify the different entries.

Before taking any anonymous comments too seriously, one would be well advised to get involved, volunteer their time, and make their own judgements about things.

12:17 so you like hunting do you? How would you like to hunt the most dangerous game in the world? How would you like to hunt a real human being? All electronic of course. You can match wits against an unarmed person capable of hunting you back anytime day or night. If you are touched by the person before you score a kill, the you the hunter loses. If you score an electronis kill before being touched you get the trophy.

Be advised, when the hunter is up against this prey, the hunter will lose almost all the time. Are you up to the challenge?

5 day hunt $10,000
