georgia-south carolina preview...

this college football preview was written by douglas tuttle, son of doug and lisa tuttle of barnesville. it originally appeared on the athens exchange website.

The 11th ranked Georgia Bulldogs will welcome the South Carolina Gamecocks to Sanford Stadium Saturday for a showdown between two SEC Eastern Division rivals. The Bulldogs are coming off an impressive 35-14 victory at home against Oklahoma State, while the Gamecocks defeated Louisiana Lafayette 28-14 at home to start the season. A victory Saturday would be a huge first step for both of these schools toward winning the SEC East.

Georgia nemesis Steve Spurrier is 0-2 against the Bulldogs in his first two seasons as South Carolina’s head coach, while Georgia coach Mark Richt has not lost to South Carolina since his first season as head coach of the Bulldogs in 2000.

Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford was impressive last week against OSU completing 18 of 24 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The return of senior wide receiver Sean Bailey, who sat out all last season with an injury, should help the Bulldogs to continue their success through the air.

The running game was also impressive with Thomas Brown making his way back from an injury last year to score two touchdowns. Senior running back Kregg Lumpkin broke his hand and will be out close to a month, but that blow was softened by the emergence of redshirt-freshman Knowshon Moreno. Moreno was impressive in his Georgia debut, rushing for 70 yards. Georgia’s young offensive line played well but South Carolina will prove to be a much tougher test than OSU.

South Carolina’s offense will be led by quarterback Blake Mitchell, who sat out the first game because of a suspension. Mitchell looked good late last year, and should be a good test for the Georgia secondary led by senior safety Kelin Johnson. Mitchell’s primary target will be wide receiver Kenny McKinley. Beyond McKinley, the South Carolina receivers are young and inexperienced. The South Carolina running game is led by Cory Boyd and Mike Davis. They will face a Georgia linebacking corps led by senior Brandon Miller that was impressive last week against OSU.

South Carolina always plays Georgia tough between the hedges and this year should be no different. Spurrier has made no secret of the importance of winning this game for South Carolina if they want to be considered among the elite SEC teams and compete for a title. Georgia’s hopes for capturing its third SEC title of the Mark Richt era would take a hit with a loss to the Gamecocks on Saturday. As always, this is a huge game for both teams.

If you read all the papers and the sports blogs, Spurrier is also bad mouthing his own team. IMO, it is a ploy to try and catch his opponents off gaurd. I think Richt is bright enough to see this, If you read the ajc the dumb ass sports columnist have several articles about SS. Talking about how likeable and colorful he is...Obviously they don't remember the Spurrier I remember. A snake is a snake...NEVER trust Spurrier.

And before any Dawg haters get on here talking smack. I think spurrier is a hell of a coach, not doubt he has the ability to beat anyone on any given Saturday. I just don't think he will ever have at USC what he had at UF. The talents not there!

UGA / USC is always a fun game. Normally close, I just hope for the tradition (UGA 5-0) to continue.

GO DAWGS!!!

Imagine if Spurrier was the mutt coach!!! I would probably abandon my loyalty to my beloved Jackets.

Anonymous said...

3:36 you should have already done that anyway! We don't need Spurrier to beat those beloved bugs!

GO DAWGS!

I guess this means its time for all the closet maggots to come out and tell the world how they are going whip the dawgs, like they have been saying for the past how many years? 6 I believe, so go ahead and talk your trash at least til Thanksgiving weekend that is!

Anonymous said...

Let the maggots have their fun. Let them get excited about beating up on a tiny Baptist Bible college and a terrible Notre Dame team. Their true colors, as always, will be exposed when they have to face real competition.

GEORGIA-SOUTH CAROLINA REVIEW

no matter what mutt nation thinks, they got beat, outcoached and outplayed by a better team. and if that is the best they have to offer, i see much more of the same for the poor ole pups this season. yeah, they will, more than likely, beat down WC this weekend and start chest thumping and leg humping again but, if they can't beat south carolina, who in the sec can they beat? im sure they will get a big win over some sec brethren somewhere down the road, but, mark my word, they will struggle to get a half way decent bowl if any at all.

7:44 is the exact reson you should not spew what you don't know. I am a huge UGA fan, I have been since I was a kid. And win, lose or draw probably always will be.

But just to set the record straight, check your stats,FACT: UGA is the winningest Team in the SEC for the past 5 yrs. Yes my friends, even more wins than UT and UF. We hold 2 of 3 SEC championships We were in for the past 5 yrs. How many did you team even play for? Bowl apperences every year for the past 8 I think and have beat USC five consecutive games as well as Tech I might add. USC gets one win over UGA and you guys go crazy, Thats hilarious!! God forbid we lose to Tech...You idiots would have massive strokes! And while we are talking about it, If UGA sux Soooo bad, Why can't Tech walk away with a W? Whats that saying about ya'll?

Everybody has bad seasons, some more than others. You TECH people can vouch for that. Everybody loves to talk about UGAs losses last season, but they still beat AU, GT, and VT. Lemme see...if Vandy beat us, and we beat ya'll, WOW!.. You better be glad you don't have to play Vandy.

GO DAWGS!!!

I'd rather have a defeated season as a bulldog, then to have one win as a yellow jackets. God y'all are some frickin' idiots. You know it would be ok if you guys knew anything about football, but y'all don't. All you know is hey dawgs lost woo hoo,yea whoopie. gt hasn't played anybody yet. and if you knew football and watched UGA play you have seen that UGA is a young team and those cocks could have been beat. But that's ok cause one thing about it UGA overall is lot better gt wouldn't make a good pimple on a gay team's ass. Oh did you idiots get it gt=gay team. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!

2:41 Actually being me is pretty damn good (ask your wife). I was the first to say they got what the deserved. I have made no excuses for their loss, I simply stated the facts. Wrapped your pea brain around that can you. Still none of you have answered my question...If UGA sux So bad ... Why can't you beat us? Like I said...all of you were quick to count UGA out last year, But it bit you in the ass did'nt it? This year is no different. Funny, Tech scored more points last saturday than they have touchdowns against UGA since the turn of the last century...and you think you have bragging rights?..ha ha ha. And for the record, I hope Tech runs the table(though I doubt it)...Right on up to November! See you there.

GO DAWGS!!

ROME stop bringing up the past. we're talking about what happened Saturday and that was UGA got beat by an inferior, or supposed inferior, team and you guys cant take it. you self implode, make excuses and give Tech hell like it's our fault yall suck. you may beat us again this year, which i doubt, but ill always rather be a yellow jacket than an idiot like you

Anonymous said...

4:53 as I have said. There are no excuses to make, they lost! and you are right by an inferior team. My point is all the Tech fans, are having fits about it? why should they even worry about it until they can accomplish what SCAR did? Are you not the idiots who keep throwing up last year? I think so. But only the points that back up the dilusional point you are trying to make.

ND, Samford, and Techs best players combined could'nt have beaten SCAR last week. So until you can beat UGA, lay off them or jump un the SCAR bandwagon. Point blank, Period.

You must be outside yo mind. After Tech rattles off about six or seven in a row, you'll still be holding to the same old lines. I make no bones, I hate UGA. Mike Vick is a personal hero because he executed bulldogs. If he'd killed a cocker spaniel or a German shepherd.....well that'd be different. I hate all Bulldogs and that includes Reggie Ball.

Anonymous said...

hate'em all you want, don't change the fact your still stuck in that losing to UGA rut!

GO DAWGS!!

Anonymous said...

Oh, you can just feel the pain of the bulldog nation in thier words. They come on here and respond with their usual dry Tech bashing as the tears fall into the keyboard. It is so sad that thier dreams have been crushed so early into the 2007 season. Wipe your keyboard off and go pop in the 1982 sugar bowl and dream on.

7:08 AM

ROME stop being delusional, put down the crack pipe and back away from the computer. the only SEC schools that i would think Tech could not beat right now would be FLA and LSU but id still like to see them give it a go. sorry son but it's gonna be a long year for you and it will only get longer around the holidays

Anonymous said...

9:06 you ignorant ape shits say that every year and then turn and choke! and still you return to run your mouth the next year. If you had any integrity at all you would refuse to talk smack about UGA until you could muster up a win against them! One loss and you Tech idiots start beating that dead horse again. I think last years national champions even had one loss! UGA owns YOU! accept it or get over it! Even if you pull one out this year, you'll be 1-6 for the last seven years. I'll take that record...EVERYTIME! Oh and the crack pipe actually belongs to your mother, I'll be sure to return it tonight!

GO DAWGS!!
