virginia tech insults its students....

from the augusta (ga.) chronicle:

"Shoot 'em up. Just shoot 'em up. Kill, kill, kill, murder, murder, murder. Shoot 'em up! Just shoot 'em up! What? Kill! Kill! Kill! Murder, murder, murder. Got yourself a gun. Yo I'm livin' in this time behind enemy lines. So I got mine. I hope you got yourself a gun!"

- Rapper Nasir Jones, a.k.a. "Nas"

This is a guy whom Virginia Tech has invited to perform at a Sept. 6 "healing" concert - to help take some of the sting out of the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Not surprisingly, a lot of folks don't think it's a stellar choice. Count us among them.

"Songs that glorify murder do not belong at a concert for the friends and families of murder victims," editorialized the Virginia Tech student newspaper. "Not only was this decision inappropriate in the first place, it is disturbing that the university has not yet removed him from the concert even after a victim's family member has openly condemned the decision."

Adds Chuck Griffin of the University of Georgia Red & Black student newspaper, "anyone with a rap sheet like Nas has no place taking the stage at Virginia Tech, despite the good intentions he may have."

Indeed, family members from over half a dozen of the 32 victims of the April shooting have complained bitterly about the inclusion of a rapper featuring such violent lyrics being included in the free concert.

As of this writing, the university stubbornly stood by the outrage, adding significant insult to inestimable injury.

Vincent J. Bove, a spokesman for seven of the victims' families, called Nas' lyrics "indicative of the moral decay in our society that contributes to acts of violence. For a university official to condone it or to be clueless of what this person's track record is, it's unconscionable beyond belief."

Alicia Farrell, a sister of one of the victims, according to the Washington Post, "said she believes there is a time and place for such music - but not at a concert meant to commemorate the victims and comfort the survivors of the worst shooting in U.S. history."

We agree with the last part, but not the former.

If there's a time and a place for lyrics glorifying murder, we'd like to know when and where that is.

walter, if you let comment #1 stand you are insulting Va. Tech students more than the rapper. As a Hokie, I am more offended by your selective blogging practices. What happened at Va. Tech in April could have (and will happen again) anywhere. Also, you will find some ignorant rapper on any given campus every weekend. Appreciate your "concern" about Va. Tech sutdents, but stick to places you have actually been in your life.

well well well so you want censered comments on a bolg page?let me guess we should run every comment by you and let you decide if it's ok to post?

Walter, I appreciate the moral courage, but I am permanently leaving this cesspool website and moving on to better blogs and publications. It's been real. Even a cesspool needs a fresh flow into it once in a while, but you all don't seem interested. What's next, blogs about holocaust deniers and the next KKK meeting? Bye.

When grossly nasty blogs appear it is almost always from someone who wants to ruin the blog or start a big fight. Nasty foul comments are a good way to drive off users of this blog. They want people to get mad and go away. That way they have power over others. The best practice is to not respond to people who are playing immature games.

As an alumni (class of 79), with the exception of the Greatful Dead in 77, Va Tech has always had the worst musician/bands play.

That said, Scoop, your opinion of the current music scene is no different than our parents view when were 18. They just didn't get it & neither to do you.

I cannot believe the school would have the gall to have someone like this, after the tragedy they have experienced. I guess my thoughts would be directed to the comfort of the student body, and the assurance that all possible would be done to prevent the tragedy again.
