Dear Editor,
In its rush to defend Michael Vick, the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP has done the unthinkable: It has insinuated that forcing dogs to fight to the death and electrocuting those who don’t “perform well” is acceptable behavior. In no state in the country is that the case.
Atlanta NAACP President R.L. White implies that people who chain dogs to buried car axles and repeatedly subject them to appalling torture and abuse should get a pass because, he says, hunting is acceptable. I can assure Mr. White that hunting animals for fun is not acceptable to a lot of people. Less than 5 percent of the American population hunts, and many people believe that shooting animals with guns or, worse, crossbows is a cruel and cowardly pastime.
Using one form of cruelty and subjugation to defend another has been done for centuries, but it has never been right. Just because some atrocities continue unabated doesn’t mean that others should not be stopped or that the perpetrators shouldn’t be punished. It is disheartening to think that an organization dedicated to defending the rights of the oppressed would even dream of siding with the oppressor.

This is a crock of sh*t.Comparing hunting with dog-fighting is idiotic. For those dumba**es that believe this, I eat what I harvest. I dont go kill an animal by brutal methods for pleasure and that "it didnt perform well". This kind of leadership of the black community (NAACP) is what keeps up racial tensions.

In the first place these persons need to compare apples and apples.

I'm black and I must say hunting has nothing to do with dog fighting to me, when you hunt you eat what you kill and dog fighting is just for someone's sick pleasure.
I am going out on a limb here but I have to side with Josey Wales on this one. I hunt on a regular basis, I butcher and consume what ever I take. It is done for sport, but also for meat for me and my family. If you are going to compare hunting, then surely fishing has to be taken into account. But there again, you do not take what you are not going to eat. I harvest nothing that I do not consume. Dog fighting is done strictly for sport and profit. I think the NAACP needs to stop, think, get a grip on what they are spouting. They are seen as a bunch of hyporcritic dumbasses already...they are just fanning the flames. I also think Vick is an idiot and hope he never plays for the NFL again.

I watched Vick's public apology with my little son who USED TO wear Michael Vick jerseys to school. It is disturbing to think a certain percentage of the population is honestly going to be swayed by Michael Vick's "enlightenment" carefully crafted by his overpaid attorneys. Call me a cynic, but I don't believe a man who has been allegedly torturing animals since childhood coincidentally has a religious epiphany as a result of getting caught and losing his job. I hope I am wrong.
If there is anything good about the Michael Vick story, it is that there is an emerging increased awareness about animal cruelty and animal fighting. There is so much anger about this issue. If we channel it into a positive direction, hopefully, something good can come of it. However...
I think it is a sad commentary that we, as a culture, are using the Vick story to compare "What's worse?" "What's worse", we ask, "carelessly fathering illegitimate children, or dogfighting?". "Dogfighting or gambling?" "Dogfighting or rape?" "Dogfighting or racism?" "Dogfighting or hateful nationalism?" "Dogfighting or (fill in the blank)....?" The comparisons to dogfighting have been endless.
Dogfighting is one more piece of evidence our country is in need of a spiritual transformation (please note I said spiritual and not necessarily religious). Animals are sentient beings - they feel pain, and they suffer, just like we do. They are not more important, or less important than human beings, but like human beings, they are important, too.
Every major faith teaches its followers to be responsible stewards of animals and the Earth. Please help us get the word out that caring for animals, just like caring for people, is an important part of just being a decent person and citizen. If we make this a priority, there will be no more dogfighting horror stories, and no more pointless comparisons of evils. Let us all rise, together, to be better people than we are today, shall we?

Fighting dogs and killing poor performers is nothing like hunting. Anyone who would fight and kill dogs for sport is one step from killing other people. They are animals that should be shot.

It's always easier to ask for forgiveness than it is for permission. Of course Vick is going to ask for forgiveness. If he doesn't he stands to lose millions. No one likes a haughty person. I would like to address the idiot's statement about the NAACP addressing "Why there are no black kids in the World Series"? If he had sense God gave a billygoat he would know that the coaches choose what players to represent the team. There are black kids playing basesball but they are chosen when it comes to championship teams. Take Barnesville Recreational for example, black and white kids play together during the summer months. However, when school start up they go back to their private world, their private school and the black kids go back to the public school. Just think what kind of baseball team LCCH would have with the black and white kids playing together. So Mr. Idiot, I hope that I have given you a free lesson in small town politics and how racism play a part even in the selection process of All-Star atheletes.
