a gem from our friend/colleague jim wooten...

in his ajc column today:

• No greater mistake could the state make with the HOPE stipend than to lower academic standards because about 18,000 fewer students met somewhat higher eligibility standards this year. When dolts get academic “scholarships” while requiring remedial instruction in college, the program’s a joke. Standards, in fact, should be raised so that even fewer students qualify. Nobody’s son misses out because of HOPE’s grading change. They miss out because they don’t study.

are you pleased or displeased with the tightening of standards for hope recipients?

is hope a scholarship program or an entitlement program?

Great comments by Mr Wooten...

Hope scholarships have become victim of "lets not hurt their self-esteem" political correctness!!

Like so many things nowadays a great concept that has gone to the dogs because of political pressure.

Some idiots do not understand when you accept mediocrity that then becomes the standard.

Shame of our politicans and minority groups to who push for
dumbing down our society.

Third World Country here we come!!

When I have tried things, and they didnt turn out as I wished. No one was concerned about my esteem. I just got laughed at like everyone else, that makes a boo boo. Political Correctness is alot of bull.

Instead of lowering the bar, perhaps they could increase what Hope pays for, since about 7-8 years ago, too many people were on Hope & they had too reduce what each student got in regards to fees & books.

I imagine the children of some of our esteemed state legislators just missed getting a HOPE scholarship, so Daddy wants to change the rules, so he won't have to pay out of his pocket.

I'm glad they raised the requirements. It will give the students who really want an education incentive to work a little harder at maintaining their GPA's, and will eliminate some of the hassles of having students in college classes who don't really want to be there.

Raise the bar. Make it harder. If you think you got what it takes then prove it.

I've got mixed feelings on this HOPE scholarship thing anyway. Finally, for good or bad, its a tax that the poor levey on themselves. The HOPE gets its revenue from the "Stupid Tax" of idiots buying lotto tickets.

Therefore, on one hand you got the poor oppressing themselves by spending what little money they have on those dadgum lotto tickets.

On the other hand, FINALLY, the poor is paying their fair share!

HOPE should certainly not be dummied down to make it easier for kindergarten college students to use it. Instead it needs to be revamped to make those who do use it and drop out have to repay the money they wasted just like a student loan. That would offer more of an incentive to achieve as well as free up some of the money wasted to go to more serious students.

Our son qualified for HOPE but never was allowed to take advantage of it other than a few hundred dollars (a drop in the bucket) for books because he had an ROTC scholarship for his tuition. He was not allowed to apply HOPE to any of his other extensive college expenses. Perhaps a change should be made to allow HOPE to go towards room and board in cases like that.

There is also a problem with the GPA requirements between colleges, but I know that would open a can of worms to say that many kindgergarten colleges certainly do not come up to par with some of the other schools within the state, yet all require a 3.0 GPA. I'm sure it wouldn't be politically correct to point out the differences.

When the teachers have to go out and recruit people to attend a college because they get a fund from it then hope is okay but then at the end of the quarter to watch all of those people stand in line to get their pell checks is disgusting. Getting that check at the end of the quarter is to only reason most of them attend college at all.

we target the blacks with ads for the lottery.....and most of the money is from the poor and blacks....then, because we dont spend money on the blacker schools, and dont send the better teachers to the black, poor , or inner city schools; the scores are lower for the blacks......we need to give half the lottery proceeds to black college bound students and half to white studens...period

HALF the black kids need to earn a GPA high enough to qualify for HOPE if you think the funds should be divided equally. Regardless of what you say, and the spin you try to put on it, black kids have the same opportunity as white kids. The difference is more white kids have parents that encourage education and support their kids in their pursuit of a higher education. It isn't the white person's fault that too many black people spend their money on lottery tickets hoping to win an easier life instead of working for one.
