NO. BUT I DID STAY AT A HOLIDAY INN LAST NIGHT!

Anonymous said...

good one!

Anonymous said...

Twice, First and Last. Way to small.

Nice place to stay, but seems like a minor chain. That seems to be what Barnesville wants though. Look at the direction were going. We wont allow a large department store to develope (walmart, etc..) but we will build a place to get more prescriptions filled!! Nothing for the younger people, plenty for the older omes though!! GREAT VISION!!

YES! WAL-MART WOULD BE GREAT. I AM TIRED OF HAVING TO DRIVE TO GRIFFIN TO SHOP AT WAL-MART, EAT, BUY GAS AND SPEND MORE OF MY $$$ IN SPALDING COUNTY. I WOULD LOVE TO STAY AT HOME IN LAMAR COUNTY TO SPEND MY $$$. JUST NEED THE PLACES. I KNOW A GREAT LOCATION FOR WAL-MART. CAN ANYBODY GUESS?

Unknown said...

I stayed in one once...never again. They are okay if you are passing through and need a bed for the night, but not any good from the businessman's perspective.

Rick, Glad you made it back from Oregon.

Anonymous said...

I heard that Walmart maybe going up on Johnsonville Road near the interstate! I am also sick of driving to spalding and upson county for anything! Let's let B'ville grow and prosper into the city/county it needs to be!

Anonymous said...

Hope not because that is in Monroe County. Once again Lamar Countians will take thier $$$ outside of Lamar. We need to make a stong push to get a super wal-mart.

Anonymous said...

I HEAR RITZ CARLTON IS LOOKING AT A SITE ON HIGHFALLS LAKE.

Anonymous said...

A Wal-Mart would mean death to Barnesville. I only shop there as a last resort (and I'm all too happy to drive 20 minutes). If you need to live near bigger stores so you can be closer to their junk, move to Griffin or elsewhere.

Anonymous said...

How would that be "death to Barnesville?" It would bring jobs, economy would boost, gas prices around here would drop (from not driving as much)....Please... Tell me the down side, I'm begging you!!

Anonymous said...

Wal-mart would be death to our downtown. look at griffin and thomaston. If you want a wal-mart where you live, move there.

Anonymous said...

9:33...Iwould kill all of Barnesvilles little "down town" business. No One would shop in the little shops anymore. Just look at what used to be down town in Forsyth and Thomaston. Barnesville would be no different. Don't get me wrong, I dont live in Barnesville anymore and don't care either way, but you have to look at the facts...

Anonymous said...

Wal-Mart consumes everything around it.

Anonymous said...

As far as those jobs that a Wal-Mart would bring, I suggest you talk to someone who works at one. They don't seem treat their employees very well. A wal-mart would suck the life out of Barnesville.

Anonymous said...

Wal-Mart would be good for the consumers, but bad for the existing local businesses.

Anonymous said...

bad for the local business is right its called Competition thats what brings down prices,i'll bet the local business owners dont buy everything they need in barnesville as a matter of fact i know they dont because i'v seen them shopping elsewhere for items that are sold at local stores just like everyone else ,sooner or later the old money (whats left of it)and the old names will die off and maybe Barnesville and lamar co will grow but not before that happens

Let's put the shoe on the other foot. Why do people shop in Barnesville? Why do people from Griffin, Thomaston and surrounding areas come to Barnesville? THEY DONT!! People here need to realize, MOM AND POP needs to retire!! What BOOMING business was in Downtown? Why is it I have to travel to buy over 75% of the things I need? I would shop here if there were places to buy from!! I cant even purchase a 2x4 here on Saturday after 12! Why do the car dealership close at 6 on not open on Saturday? I WORK, I cant get off, so Im outta here when it comes to purchasing a vehicle! People need to realize that progress is coming, PLAN FOR IT!!!!! New homes are everywhere, but they too will be shopping in another county!! OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE!!

Anonymous said...

So what the long time B'villians are telling the younger generation is "We dont want your kind around here?" Makes sense because obviousley what worked 50 years ago is still relevant for today. By the way, has anyone seen the milk man in the past 25 years?? If so, tell him he missed my house!! Dont get me wrong, anytime I feel the need to "go back in time" I walk the downtown area. But then again, I didnt realize Verizion was available then!

Anonymous said...

why would you come to barnesville to pay higher prices for something when you can drive a short distance to either griffin or thomaston and have a better and cheeper selection?

Anonymous said...

Thats my point! Nobody shops here, only the people who live here buy here. And they dont buy the majority of necessitys from Barnesville! I dont understand why people HATE progress??

Anonymous said...

Another "minor" chain coming to BArnesville. Get used to it, this place will take over the Barnesville motel. Come on people, set your goals a little higher will ya!

Anonymous said...

What about the Ritz Carlton at Highfalls? Which county? (Butts, Lamar, Monroe)

Barnesville has charm, which is something the surrounding towns with Wal-marts and other big stores don't have. I hear lots of comments from people all over the state about what a pretty town it is. Why would anyone want to ruin that? Again, if big stores and huge asphalt parking lots are what you like, there are plenty of houses on the market nearby those places. And, as you say, they're probably "cheeper" than here. Typical Wal-mart shopper spelling.

Anonymous said...

Yes barnesville has charm and the downtown area is nice....but they dont have a damn thing anyone needs. People have to shop out of town....you need to take a class in reality 101.

Anonymous said...

The parking downtown is terrible! If you can find a place to park you play hell trying to leave. I stay away!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I like barnesville. I hope to get back there one day. I hope by then, all you people that post something negative about everything on this blog are gone.

Are you really complaining because Microtel is a "minor chain". Is that a quantitative or qualitative assertion? Wal-mart will come in and they will use our local government to seize land from citizens at a below market rate. Careful what you wish for.

And what kind of necks ask for a wal-mart? Most communities fight tooth and nail to prevent wal-mart from building a store.

How much junk could you possibly need at wal-mart where the 20 minute drive to thomaston or griffin is too much to handle?

"We wont allow a large department store to develope (walmart, etc..) but we will build a place to get more prescriptions filled!! Nothing for the younger people, plenty for the older omes though!! GREAT VISION!!"
If your idea of building something "for the younger people" is a wal-mart, you really need to get out more.

Why doesn't barnesville get something that every surrounding town doesn't have. Maybe small shops that sale quality goods that you can't get at a discount warehouse. Why don't yall want to give people a reason for coming here and strive for better things, instead of just trying to be like your neigboring town.

I agree that if you are tired of the drive to wal-mart, then, lucky for you, we are in a buyers market for housing. I am sure there are plenty of houses for sale in thomaston, griffin, or forsyth at everyday low prices. Probably a few houses within a rocks throw of the wal-marts there, where people with good sense moved out.

anon 5:40pm: When Andy Taylor is Sheriff of Lamar Co. then I will support the cozy little shops, apple pie, j-walking the worse crime, etc.

But the fact is this aint Mayberry no more! I hate wal-mart and all the mega stuff now but it is a fact of life now and it is our own damm fault.

Anonymous said...

i suppose those who disapprove of the hotel chain coming here are the ones who don't want to have any fun places around here....

i love the idea of paintball and having the field here in barnesville, i have been there quite a few times and it's a great place a shame not more have taken advantage of it!

we need more places, like mini golf, or go karts or something!

Anonymous said...

We may not be Mayberry, but If you were around a few months ago when the bus came to "Our" Mayberry you might feel different. These people, who for the most part were investors to keep small towns going, were totally in awe of out town and the way the people turned out to show them what we have.
FYI: Thomaston Street has almost been completely restored. Almost all the buildings downtown have been restored and are occupied by some business. The old Ritz Theatre fell in and had to be demolished, but in it's place has sprung up Ritz Park, which is a safe place to hold small to medium concerts and shows. The old train depot has been restored and now is home to Lamar Arts where there is a Gallery of art that changes every few months free for the viewing.
Our downtown is quickly becoming the "Poster Child" for small town living.
We are getting some big business here also. Protech and more will follow. Hopefully this will eventually help with our tax base if we can get the right people in office.
What I am long winded saying is; I moved to Barnesville many years ago to get away from the Walmarts and the shopping malls and the crime and traffic associated with this. I will not leave again, so I will fight to keep Barnesville "Mayberry".
Don't miss out on the best part of small town living and GET INVOLVED!
Hey, I here we even have a bikini contest now! Did you know Griffin did a nude calendar that featured many of the prominent business men of Griffin?

Why is every1 so down on Barnesville? If you are so unhappy here..MOVE then you will be a happier person. you think it is so bad here...it probably won't be any better any place else. It is what you make of it and..the negative reactions is probably cause you are a unhappy person. Move to Atlanta and you will probably be glad to call Barnesville home. Bring on new stores...gas costs too much to drive too far to shop

"Yes barnesville has charm and the downtown area is nice....but they dont have a damn thing anyone needs. People have to shop out of town....you need to take a class in reality 101."

Whoever wrote this, does Wal-mart really have what you need? That's just SAD!

Anonymous said...

If you live in Griffin or Thomaston, it would still probably take you 20 minutes to get to your beloved Wal-mart...unless of course you list in the apartment complex next to it!

Anonymous said...

Im not talking about Wal Mart. I am talking about any store in General. Barnesville is a great place. I love living in Barnesville but what can you buy in barnesville other than a hair cut or a candle. Please tell my why there is no need for people to go out of town to shop.

I've got to visit Barnesville. This place should hold a place in Ripley's Believe it or Not for have the biggest population of stupid ass jerks and uneducated dopes in the world.

Sounds like we may be 2nd to Tifton.

ANON 2:06,
If you had to write a 1 paragraph paper telling people why they do not need to shop OUT OF BARNESVILLE, what would you say? What does B'ville offer?

Anonymous said...

Come on....can anyone tell me?

I would love to know what I am missing. Why do I go out of town to buy clothes, shoes, cars, office supplies, home products, etc, etc, etc?

ATTENTION!

My family & I are headed to Griffin to shop at Wal-mart in just a moment. We will be getting the items we were unable to find here yesterday although we did do as much shopping as we could yesterday in Barnesville. I am sure we will eat lunch & fill the tank while there. We may even take in an afternoon movie. Did I mention we need a new car? (PER MY WIFE) Therefore, we will stop and look at cars today. May even buy one it the price is right. No telling what other impulse buying we (my wife) will do while there.

I will be sure to keep a total today and even break out the amount of taxes we spend that will go to Spalding (except for the auto) and report back later tonight or tomorrow depending on what time we finally get back from spending ( i mean shopping)
I say spending / she say shopping
spending / shopping:
tomato / tamata
ha ha ha: got to keep on laughing!

If Griffin is so great then move up their. I belive people forget why they live in B'ville. Why do we need to be like surrounding counties who have no pride in their own town. You live here because you like the small town feel. If we bring in the Wal-Marts and all the subdivisions then we are know different then any of the others towns that surround us. I know were not Mayberry but I don't see what wrong with controlling what comes here.

If Griffin is so great, why don't you live their?

We need the growth in Barnesville, another supermarket would be nice, and like the others have said, a small variety store like a kmart or Target, but the community can not support a Super-walmart.

Anonymous said...

how did talking about a small hotel chain, lead to Walmart? Walmart is the devil folks :)
Lamar County cannot and probably never will be able to support a super walmart, or even a smaller walmart. We are too low on the food chain for them. Target and Kmart maybe good candidates for here, but not in the near future. Sure you can get everything here but it's more expensive, and with gas prices the way they are you are paying the difference in gas when to go to Thomaston or Griffin.
The only time I ever venture astray is when I near those towns, preferably Thomaston, and do some shopping. I will admit to going to Griffin at least twice a month to grocery shop at Kroger, and hell I have even drove to Fayetteville to go to Publix. I don't mind doing that for better quality and a cleaner store to shop in. I am sure I will get "cussed" at for my comment. I really don't care. The only thing that Barnesville really needs is a better and nicer grocery store. The majority of the time Ingles and Giant Mart just don't cut it!
Did you hear that we may be getting an Applebees?

Are you saying that is what Barnesville needs or thats whats coming?

I hate to see Barnesville grow!! Leave it small!!! To all whom would like to see it grow needs to go visit places like Henry Co and others to see all the screw up they made. Growth means-traffic, CRIME, etc. I would drive miles to go shopping if needed before I would said "yes" to growth!!!!!

I was born and raised in Barnesville and left after graduation. I have fond memories of my home town: Barnesvile Dept. Store, Romeo's, Deraney's, Goodman's, Wisebram's, Mr. Shelor's Drug Store, English's, Keadle's Hardware, Dr. Traylor, Dr. Crawford, The Frosty Palace, and Pastime Grill's sweet tea!!! I now call Perry, GA my home which was much like Barnesville when my family and I moved here. We now have SUPER WAL_MART, Kroger, Red Lobster and various other big name stores and hotels. BUT, Perry still has it's quaint downtown with it's boutiques, tea rooms, cafe', children's shop, and other shops that make a town "home."
