The Georgia state pardons and paroles board has denied clemency for John Hightower in the killings of his wife and two stepdaughters.

Parole board spokeswoman Scheree Lipscomb says the board denied clemency today, meaning the execution — for now — will go forward.

It is scheduled for 7 p-m today.

But Hightower still has appeals pending in state and federal court.

Hightower's attorneys are trying several last-minute appeals — including the clemency petition and a request to the U-S Supreme Court for a delay — to keep him from the death chamber.

Appeals lawyer Jack Martin asked a Superior Court judge yesterday to delay the execution on the grounds that the state's method of execution is inhumane. The judge denied that request.

Absent any relief, Hightower will be given a lethal injection tonight.

The 63-year-old Hightower was convicted for the July 12th, 1987, killings of his wife, Dorothy Hightower, and his two stepdaughters, Evelyn Reaves and Sandra Reaves, at a home in Milledgeville, in middle Georgia.

If carried out, the execution will be Georgia's first in nearly two years.

Thw way Hightower took the lives of his family was not "humane". I can't believe they are concerned about his execution being humane, when his crime certainly deserves punishment.

Not one of the protesters have lost a loved one to a cold-blooded killer.Feelings would be different then.

the man deserves to die for what he did

what gets me is he spared the youngest because he didn't do anything to him, and what in the hell did the other three do to him...

They did fry him...or at least that is what wsb just reported. Good riddance. He did apologize to the victims family before he died.

According to the Macon paper: After visitation ended at 3 p.m., Czachowski said Hightower was served his last meal, four fried pork chops, collard greens with boiled okra and boiling meat, fried corn, fried fatback, fried green tomatoes, cornbread, lemonade, one pint of strawberry ice cream and three glazed donuts.

Doesn't he know that stuff will kill him?

Why do they give a physical just prior to the execution?

To prevent any chance of mistaken identity. Or at least that is what I read from news report on some dude that just got executed in Tx.

I think we should allow the medical doctors to retrieve stem cells from those being executed.

Is that possible?

Or for that matter, any usable organs.

He had twenty years more than he should have! He did not allow the victims twenty years. Why should he be allowed any more appeals. Don't let any person convicted of murder any more than the time it takes to prove hime guilty then PULL THE PLUG!!!!!!
