from the new york times today:
President Bush has insisted that those secret “enhanced” techniques are crucial, and he is far from alone. The notion that turning up pressure and pain on a prisoner will produce valuable intelligence is a staple of popular culture from the television series “24” to the recent Republican presidential debate, where some candidates tried to outdo one another in vowing to get tough on captured terrorists. A 2005 Harvard study supported the selective use of “highly coercive” techniques.
But some of the experts involved in the interrogation review, called “Educing Information,” say that during World War II, German and Japanese prisoners were effectively questioned without coercion.
“It far outclassed what we’ve done,” said Steven M. Kleinman, a former Air Force interrogator and trainer, who has studied the World War II program of interrogating Germans. The questioners at Fort Hunt, Va., “had graduate degrees in law and philosophy, spoke the language flawlessly,” and prepared for four to six hours for each hour of questioning, said Mr. Kleinman, who wrote two chapters for the December report.
Mr. Kleinman, who worked as an interrogator in Iraq in 2003, called the post-Sept. 11 efforts “amateurish” by comparison to the World War II program, with inexperienced interrogators who worked through interpreters and had little familiarity with the prisoners’ culture.
The Intelligence Science Board study has a chapter on the long history of police interrogations, which it suggests may contain lessons on eliciting accurate confessions. And Mr. Borum, the psychologist, said modern marketing may be a source of relevant insights into how to influence a prisoner’s willingness to provide information.

The thing about using torture is what goes around comes around. The US should be above stooping to the tactics of terrorists.
I read an article in Leatherneck magazine about an interogator from WWll who did not use torture but was extremely effective. He took the time to know his enenmy and was able to use that knowledge to great benefit.
Of course we want to brutalize our enemy but we must not succumb to the lust for blood. The US sets the example. Nations might hate us but they look to us for direction and examples of the right way to do things. If we stoop too low we will have lost any credibility we have left. We will become them.
I hope and pray that we're better than that.
9:32 am said "Nations might hate us but they look to us for direction and examples of the right way to do things" the only thing that other countries look at us for is AID and envy they are looking at us thru a gun sight,we are the worlds target get ready they will be back and this time it will be a whole lot worse than 9/11!!!
I totally agree with anon 9:32. What goes around comes around & there is no reason to sink to the same level as the terrorists.
The US has always been the world's leader in human rights and must lead by example. To torture will make us no different than Saddam.
We need interrogators who not only speak the language, but understand the culture to be effective.
oh lets all just get friendly with em'. BS!!! you give me a tennis ball thrower and a few pounds of baked potatos and ill get you some intel. spuds at 300fps fired up their a$$ should produce some rather interesting facts. i bet i could find Hoffa!

aside from my previous post, i once heard that german soliders were so hungry that US soldiers would interrogate spies in the mess hall. the smell and sight of warm food was enough to get em talking after a few days.

If what goes around comes around is truly how the world works, were are the decapitated Muslims? They have been doing this for a while and I have yet to see a film on our soldiers choppin' away at those pigs. Torture them when its necessary and don't let em' tell anyone, kill em' when your done! This is how the WORLD does it and according to the democraps we shouldn't be trying to change the world through our western ways, so lets just join em'. Hey, were not interfering with their culture that way. How do you want it democraps? Lead the world or leave it alone?

i can't beleive this panzy crap, you do what you got to to win war is not a game of rules, how many of you making those post have ever even been in combat?and trying to reference events that happened during ww2 is nuts, that was a whole different era,the only way you win a war is to kill more of them than they kill of you and keep doing it until somebody quits thats it!!
12:57 ----thats the whole ball of wax right there folks
the biggest load of crap i have ever read.
as109 i am refering to the website listed above.
So being a 9 year vet I can speak on this with some validation. The whole treatment of detainees is not as cut and dry as you may think, becasue we are a super power, other countries do look to us for some guidence and also they look at us and hold us accountable for our actions. How pissed are we that US citiznens and allies are being mistreated on freakin Gee-haad TV, its an outrage and the normal reaction of the average person is "go kill that S.O.B." Thank you for not enlisting and making things much worse. we are governed by rules of engagement and are held accountable for what we do, we are soldiers of freedom not destruction, there is a difference. I took the job seriously and glad I did, and no one can tell me that i am not a patriot. As far as being worried about being envaded on US soil again, all I can say is not on your life. Bring em on!!
WE WILL BE INVADED AGAIN. Sad but true. We will walk away from our responsibilities and in time the jihad will catch up to us again. We are the only country on earth that will give sympathy for the Devil. He didn't mean it, he was just raised that way,(you know who I'm talking about).

You must be Rosie O'Donnell's gay lover. You are an idiot!
Rev.MJB
5:39 was pretty good, but this whole idea of 911 being a government scheme, to throw us off balance, to give into letting some of our freedoms go, that is way out in left field for me. How do these people plan to prove this? If this is true, then all further presidents would have to be complete puppets and past presidents also, I know money has controlled our Government more now than ever, but this would go past the point of greed. You would have to convince hundreds to thousands of people to plot this and then pay them millions more to cover their mouths for the rest of their lives. This is were the human condition would come in and people would begin to talk, this would not be easy to live with. We the people need to gain control of an out of control government, but playing the whole 911 card is really hurting any such attempt. Getting people to stand together is a lot easier if you leave out the conspiracy theories, and until huge amounts of proof are there, this is what it is. The media is controlled by a select few, regardless of party allegiance, joining any multi-country union is a huge mistake and will cripple if not destroy us, government education is the greatest plot against our own people ever documented (my personal opinion and it is recorded in history), and last but not least, a government issued intelligent ID card is scary as hell and I will never stand for that, and last but not least, the democratic party has brainwashed people into accepting socialism as the only hope for our nation and both parties are playing politics with this war. And legalizing drugs is a great idea, it will hurt at first, but responsible people will be the mass of our society once again. I apologize for not reading the second website before my fist statement today, but after the first website I figured it was crap. Pretty good.
Rev.MJB-
i don't agree with it all but it has a lot that i do.
Yes Rev. MJB there is hope for you!
Too bad the multitudes cannot think on the same level as you and a few, especially in B-ville.
It is hard to imagine to what degree and how the powers that exist have eroded our way of life. It’s obvious I don’t write much but I do read a lot, probably too much. I just wanted you to know that I value your opinion.
open letter to Chris Matthews
Dear Mr. Matthews,
What has happened to you? On your Sunday show this past weekend you showed you remain in lock step with all or most of your colleagues and continue to demonstrate ignorance rather than the facts. How can you be so grossly out of step with most of the world on the question of the assassination of JFK? Why do you and most of the mainstream continue to ignore the findings of our own government which revisited the assassination in 1979 when the House formed the Committee on Assassination?
Acoustical and scientific evidence led to a conclusion of ‘high probability’ for conspiracy in the killing of Kennedy. And it might behoove you to take a another look at the video where the evidence is overwhelmingly clear.
Back and to the left.
Back and to the left.
Back and to the left.
That’s what happened to Kennedy’s head when a bullet hit him fired from the front of the car. It’s clear as day for anyone to see on the video made from the Zapruder film. The House Committee in fact determined there was a second shooter.
So, Oswald did not act alone. Period. And the bastards got away with it because of the complicity of people like you who for whatever reason cannot contemplate the kind of evil and power that could commit such a crime and get away with it. The same blindness and deception by the media has allowed the truth about 9/11 to remain obscured with key facts ignored and important whistle-blowers silenced.
While I have respected you for being amongst the best hard nosed interviewers on television, that respect is rapidly eroding, and for good reason. First, so far at least, you have utterly failed to challenge Rudy Guiliani’s hero status relative to the events of 9/11 allowing a frequent guest on your show to claim that “he [Guiliani] owns 9/11″. And now on your Sunday show, in the wake of new books on the subject, you insist that Oswald acted alone and in so doing commit a most egregious form of irresponsible journalism. Ok, yours was not an investigative report but neither you nor a single guest on your show today represented fairly the views of most Americans not to mention the findings of our own government which found Oswald did not act alone. How can we Americans have any respect for a fourth estate that continues, year after year, anniversary after anniversary, to elevate deception in the face of countervailing facts? The House Committee on Assassinations found hard evidence for a conspiracy behind the killing of John F. Kennedy. See a summary of the findings here: http://www.archives.gov/research/jfk/select-committee-report/summary.html
It’s far past time for you and your talking-head ilk inside the beltway, granted the honored position of having a much louder voice in the affairs of this Republic, to do your homework, or at least to give a voice to those who can make a reasoned case challenging the minority view’s status quo. Given fair treatment and equal time there is no doubt that you and this country will wake up to the evil in this country that led directly to the political assassinations of the most esteemed leaders of the 20th Century. This was not the evil of lone deranged men. As for JFK, please read the report of the Committee on Assassinations for starters. As for Martin Luther King Jr. please read, An Act of State, by William Pepper. The overwhelming evidence is clear and the fact is the mainstream media has been complicit in covering up or ignoring facts which would have led to very different conclusions about who was behind the murder of these great leaders. And in regards to the attacks of September 11th I challenge you to read, “Debunking 9/11 Debunking” by David Ray Griffin and invite him on your show in advance of the 6th anniversary. If you think 9/11 conspiracy theories have no merit or perhaps are dishonoring the dead as some have said, why not put that position to the test and invite Dr. Griffin to join you on Hardball?
You are like a band memeber on the Titanic, trying to play a comforting tune for the doomed passengers, as the ship (our nation) goes down. Please for the sake of our Nation and its Constitution, wake up, do your homework and have the courage to challenge your views and your beliefs, about the political assassinations of JFK and King and about 9/11. Please do your homework or at the very least give fair time and opportunity for opposing views. Only then Mr. Matthews will you begin to earn the respect I wish I could give to you and to our country’s now failing Fourth Estate.

P.S. I would be remiss in not mentioning Senator Wellstone. Privately poll his fellow Senators who survived him and I would wager a significant majority would believe it was a political assassination. And yet there is no call for an independent investigation. Perhaps they fear if they did they would become target for the next letter with US weapons grade anthrax.
btw...Rev, what do you think about this?
http://www.bilderberg.org/2007.htm
Kyle,
Do you also believe that Ted Kennedy murdered Mary Jo Kopeckne?
12:30
Boy, that was a long boring blog. Whackos come out of the woodwork sometimes. I think that happened more than 40 years ago. Anybody involved is dead or dying. Yet we keep brining it up like its going to change something now. That's like apologizing for slavery is going to make everyone feel better. Even though no one is alive today that experienced it. Get over it and get a life. There are things going on today that need our attention.
Ditto 9:16...You said a mouth full...
ROME
Kyle,
Do you think Hillary Clinton killed Vince Foster, or had him killed?
Conspiracy theories are the same as staring into a dark room, you stare long enough, you swear you see something. Now is something in the room? I don't know and you don't know either, you are disregarding Government and popular thought (which there is nothing wrong with that if you want another view), but you then cling to another persons opinion and think since its so far away from the popular belief, it must be true. Neither one of us have the resources, our selves, to solve any of this, so you absolutely must take this and all else we are told with a grain of salt. The Government lies, your children lie, and yes- your momma lies too! I personally think that 911 was not a conspiracy, it would have been too risky of a plan. And if the reason for this was to blind us while Governments attempt global unity, there would have been too much at stake if info leaked. You want to talk about ruining the Governments plans, watch the world as we know it change in an hour's time if they would have dropped the ball on this one world government attempt, can you imagine the room for error in this plot. It's a hella-va-lot easier to fire a gun from a Library window than it is to coordinate explosives with airliners.
Just don't vote for Clinton or Obama, they have socialist minds and that aint' no conspiracy!
Rev.MJB
"Do you also believe that Ted Kennedy murdered Mary Jo Kopeckne?"you damn right he did he wlaked around on that bank worrying about his political future while she drowned
