whining from the folks hit by tornadoes thursday night in georgia and alabama?
is it a totally different situation?
or, are the tornado victims of a totally different, self-sufficient breed?
discuss.

The scale and magnitude of the two events aren't comparable.
the mentality, you have hard working people self ssupporting people in Americus & Ala and you have goverment dependent welfare bums in Neworleans
Let's see -
Katrina - over 100,000 left homeless
Tornadoes - less than 1000 homeless.
No comparison & much less opportunity for FEMA to screw up
The credibility of this blog takes a severe blow with a stupid question like that. Are you kidding me?
Ok, first of all, the tornadoes in Americus do not compare on the devastation scale in terms of property damage nor loss of life to Katrina. So, perhaps you should clarify what you are really asking. Are you asking do working class white people whine less than government dependent black people?
you can bet your sweet ass they dont,WORKING CLASS WHITE PEOPLE dont stand around with their hand out expecting somebody else support them when katrina happened all you had to do was watch tv and look at the savages those were not humans they should have let the swamp and snakes have the nasty place back, come to think about it just how many white people did you see looting?i wish i had a built in excuse for everything
The devestation that was caused by Katrina and a tornado killing a few folks in south Georgia is not even close to being the same thing. Next topic, please.
Race baiting, W?
How can you say these two things are non-comparable. They are both natural disasters. They both took peoples lives, homes, and possessions. Everyday people like you and me woke up the next morning without a house and with loved ones and friends who had been killed or displaced. Whether it was a hurricane or a tornado both are catastrophic events for those whose homes and lives are in front of them. No doubt there is big difference in population and funds involved but both are still natural disasters which do not discriminate.
not race baiting at all. i doubt a tornado could cut a 28 mile long, three-mile wide swath through sumter county and not impact residents of all races.
in retrospect, however, i could have worded the question a bit better.
katrina impacted far greater numbers of people BUT they had days to prepare and get out of dodge. the tornado victims had little or no warning.
looters are scum no matter their race, creed or national origin.
Of course with Katrina, FEMA and other government agencies had "days to prepare" & we see what good that did! If your house is destroyed, you are devastated regardless whether you had of a couple days or a couple of minutes of prep time.
The point is that they did have at least a week to leave New Orleans. They choose not to. Sure the property would still have been destroyed but the loss of life would have been less. Think they will hang around next time?
I also think the mayor there needs to take most of the blame....he still has things completely screwed up.
FEMA was looted too.
to the few that lost loved ones in south GA, dont tell them it is any different. To each individual that lost everyhting in South GA, it is no different than the individual that lost everything in Katrina.
The difference is in the way that each of those individuals react to the situation. The differnce is in the entitlement attitude you found in the Katrina situation that ws caused heavily by the media sensationalizing the fact that government onwed them something in a situation like this. The media is did this to create a story line that viewers would watch and buy into. You are right it is differnt becasue the media knows this same type of hype will not work when it is fewer numbers effected, so there will not be as much bang for there buck get to the emotions of those effected. Also different is the mentality of people who are not spurred along by the media and told they should feel this way.
It is not the governments fault Natuaral disasters happen, and any assistance given to any of us during a time like this is a gift and not an entitlement. THe entitlement mentality inthis country is going to be the death of our socio-economic sytem.
Death of a family is death of a family whether it was with 6 or 600. losing everything is the same no matter how many lost everything with you.
Alot of the Katrina whiners are rich folks who were stupid enough to build big hopuses on the coast and now expect the taxpayers to compound the stupidity and help pay for them to rebuild. As to why there is no whining from Georgia...it's still early, give them time.
I don't think anyone is arguing that the tornadoes in South Georgia aren't a tragedy, but on a national scale, it doesn't compare to Katrina.
I do think, when a natural disaster occurs, the government should be able to step in and aid its people in the short term. I don't agree with the fact that people are still using the excuse of Katrina to still get financial support from government. This system is obviously flawed but there must be some sort of middle ground to be found here/
Many moons ago when stuff happened people were strong enough to move on without govt aid. Today people are lazy and wants government to do everything for them. It's good that our government wants to assist but they should't be expected to do it all. Friends and family are always a great help.
I do know what it's like to lose everything but the clothes on your back. I didn't get much help but I bounced back because I wouldn't allow myself to stay down.
The only difference between Katrina and Georgia is the size of the event. Those in N.O. had enough warning to get out of the way whereas those in GA had none.
After Katrina people complained about the time it took for assistance to arrive. Had they left the area when told no one would have been there to complain. Those in GA had enough warning to run outside and get blown away.
All in all the event in GA is just as bad as the event in N.O. areas.
Wow what a stupid question Walter? There is absolutely no comparison between these two events. The scale and magnitude of Katrina KILLED thousands whilst the tornadoes contributed to the deaths of like twenty people. Hurricane Katrina was a widespread catastrophic event and I must say that they had no need to whine. Help was availabe IMMEDIATELY after the disasters in S. GA/Alabama occured.
The difference is that the people in NO had been warned to leave at least a week prior to Katrina hitting. They were STUPID and choose to stay. Guess they didnt want to miss out on the looting. The people in GA never had that warning.
Lets all give a hand to the mayor of NO. He handled everything so well.
I have a close friend that lost his brother in the tornado that struck Taylor Co. in March. His family did not react the way that the Katrina victims did they did not take all that they could get and were really greatful when FEMA helped pay for his funeral expenses.
Get your attitude staight the government and no one else owes you anything. Get out and support yourself!
