hot topic from the poll question board on mobile homes...

has the time come for lamar county to halt permitting for all mobile/manufactured homes except for those to be located in moble home parks?

Several years ago when we first moved here, we couldn't find a house large enough that we could afford. Found some land to buy, but found that we didn't have enough time to build from the ground up, so we considered a very nice, 2200 + sq. foot new modular home. However, our realtor strongly discouraged us, and in fact, lied to us about the zoning for MH's on this particular parcel of land stating that MH's were not allowed. We later found this to be untrue. Ultimately, we bought a home in foreclosure in the same area and it has been one nightmare after the other trying to get all the upgrades and repairs made. I sometimes wish I had went with that beautiful modular home that we considered. There have been two modular homes moved into my area since we moved here. My property value hasn't decreased apparently, because my property taxes have increased yearly!!

While many of the "movers and shakers" of Lamar county would like to believe that we are a suburban county like Henry county, the truth is that even if metro Atlanta is able to continue growing at the same pace as it has for the last 10 years, true suburban growth will not reach Lamar for at least 10 more years! Until that time, there is no reason to ban manufactured homes as they provide affordable housing to many of the gainfully employed, land owning taxpayers of the county.

I know several people that have added a manufactured home to their property to provide a home for elderly parents. This allows the elderly some independence, but close enough to the family if a problem arises. In these cases, the home will be "removed" after the parents have passed. Do you want to force these people to live in a nursing home with a weekly or monthly visit from the grand-kids?

I would not be opposed if the county wants to enact some fair restrictions, such as no single-wides, minimum acreage, etc. , but a ban goes too far.

It seems to me that it is wrong to legislate what a person can live in on property THEY have purchased. Modular homes are not unattractive and are easier to afford for some. And it is true that some put them on their property for a loved one who needs care.I just think that it is wrong to pass these kinds of laws.

i thought republicans were against big government and keeping the politians out of our family's pocket and business.....looks like they arent telling the truth, and want to rule like they say the democrats do....

I feel that there should be no change. Mobile homes under the same rules that exist. It is nonsense to change that. There are persons that a new mobile home may be the highpoint of their life.
Should we be so condesending to prevent that?

So are you saying the board is actually considering this or are you just stirring the pot a little. If the Lamar County government is, these guys are not even smart enough to pick a fight they can win. First Fla Rock and now the mobile home industry. The lawyers for Lamar County must be the happiest(and richest)lawyers in the state.

Are all these people Republicans Anon 7:09? Did you even research this?

Anonymous said...

They should definitely be restricted!!!!! I wouldnt buy or build a house next to a trailor.

There is a difference between a trailer and a manufactured home. Look at Fuller Trailer Park. Those are trailers, I myself would not want to live next to something like that. But now manufactured homes are a different kind of thing. Look at those models that sit next to 75 near McDonough. Manufactured or Pre-Fab homes are the thing of the future. I mean if it weren't for those Extreme Makeover, Home Edition wouldn't be such a hit!

Yes, get rid of them. I hate them!

Anonymous said...

I say let them stay only if they keep the sheels under them and the tongue, that way if the people living there dont keep there place clean, the local authorities can just hook up to them and pull them off to a gov owned trailer park and charge them rent to help pay for the counties attny costs......hehe

wheels not sheels(sp)

Trailors should be kept in trailor parks. Just ride around Lamar Co. and look at the condition of most of them....not all but most. Hell, at some of the places there is more crap out in the yard than in the trailor. They are all rusty, etc etc etc. I dont see how people live like that. Any way my point is that if they were kept up, it might be a different story. I dont care how rich or poor someone is there is no reason to use your property as a junk yard.

Get off your high horse about mobile homes. They are just as decent a home to live in if not better than most stick built homes. I live in one on 20 acres of land that my husband and myself worked hard to pay for and ya'll aint gonna tell me they are an eyesore because thet are definitly not. It just depend on the type of people that live there. I consider myself a clean decent person and I keep my property up just as well if not better than people who have built a house. Keep your nasty attitude about people you know nothing about, to yourself.

Anonymous said...

Im not on a high horse. LIke I said not all places are dumps. Im glad you are pround of what you have and no one is putting you down but the fact is a majority of trailors are dumps and that because of the sorry people living in them. They let them get that way. I guess they grew up thinking its ok to throw the toilet in the front yard if its broke and why use the trash can when you have the whole front yard to use. And I think the best I have seen is all the window screens laying aroung with grass growing up through them. It is what it is and its too bad people are that sorry. Its nothing to do with money. Its attitude and pride.

Anonymous said...

Thats what you call trailor trash!

Anonymous said...

Trash in the front yard and yards used as resting places for junked automobiles is not a problem unique to the occupants of mobile homes. A person who resides in a mobile home has the same capacity for pride in ownership as those who live in stick built homes. Generalizatons based on where and what type home in which one lives is absurd. Location doesn't always matter: There are a couple of run down houses on THOMASTON STREET that need immediate attention. One is quite large and is for sale, the other is at the end of the street, but both are eyesores. I even think I saw fake flowers in a yard on T-Street. LOL. Don't get much more trashy than that.

I for one with someone would paint that horrid gold fence!

There are quite a few houses all over barnesville that could a little demolition on them. I also see houses with toilets in the front yard so don't talk about people who live in mobile homes some of the nicest people I know live in mobile home and they take care of them better than alot of people in the city of barnesville. I am just glad that I own my land and you can't tell me what I can live in. I live in the country and the area that I live in has mobile homes and stick built homes in it. they don't seem to have a problem with mobile homes or else they would not have built houses in this location. I live across the road from a very nice brick home and am good friends with the owner. They don't have a problem driving out of their driveway and seeing my place. Because they know that I take care of my place inside and out. I am not trailor trash and some of the trashiest people I know come from Nice Homes. Don't run down everyone who have mobile homes and stop trying to make everyone live up to your expectations. Everyone has their own set of values and sense of pride.

There are plenty of houses in Lamar county, that are not mobile homes, that have an enormous amount of trash in their yards. You cannot regulate one without regulating the other. Those are the residents problems and need to be made to clean them up. Then what difference would it make Mobile or stick built.

Anonymous said...

bottom line is that if you own the land and are not doing anything illegal, then the government should leave you the heck alone and allow you to live in whatever you want......

Anonymous said...

Anyone know of any land for sale that doesnt have trailors around?

Anonymous said...

You better look elsewhere for land without mobile homes. Unless you want to move into town with snooty neighbors or into a subdivision where people tend to everyone elses business.

Manufactured homes are the only dwellings that Geraldine will have a hard time selling due to nonpayment of taxes.

They go DOWN in value, even though they may be very nicely maintained.

They are the 'perfect' tax shelter.

You can't take it with you when you go, folks.

Count me in!

The more we give in to govenment interference with what we can or cannot do with our properties, the more liberties we lose. Does Eminent Domain sound familiar. I say keep the government out of my backyard or my front yard for that matter.

- honestly, look at some of the houses in this town.....how dirty/crappy they keep their yards, ect.....can we do the same for them? oh, and while we're on the subject, the apartment complexes in this town are the dingiest i've ever seen...should we get rid of them too....oh, wait, why not kick everyone out of this town who can't afford to live on Thomaston Street....

Yeah, low rent and low income people are the majority in Lamar county. If you want to be like Peachtree City then maybe you should move to Peachtree Ctiy. It is a beautiful place to live but they also have mobile homes.

Anonymous said...

I beg to differ.

Anonymous said...

what do you beg to differ about? My husband used to work in peachtree city and I know far a fact there are mobile homes in peachtree city.
I've benn by them.

Anonymous said...

So are the trailors in Peachtree City bigger and better than the ones in B'ville?

Anonymous said...

Personally I dont think your income bracket should make it ok to live like hillbillies. Just because someone is poor doesnt mean that they cant keep their yard/trailor/house clean.

Anonymous said...

If you took the people from railroad street and give them home's in peachtree city, within one year peachtree city would be the most trashy place in GA. Bottom line it doesnt matter what type of home you live in, if you are a trashy person your home will reflect that.

Anonymous said...

It doesn't matter what people you were to put in mobile homes whether they be from railroad st or up town if they have no respect for other people they will run the neighborhood down. Yes there are mobile homes in peachtree city and no they are not fancy but they are well maintained. It just depends on the quality of the person as to what kind of neighbors they will be.
Not all people who live in mobile homes are white trash or trailor trash. some of the worst trashy people I know do not live in mobile homes.

Anonymous said...

Living in a mobile home has nothing to do with the way someone maintains there home.

Anonymous said...

Listen here you bunch of dumpster diving trailor trash! Yall need to get the hell out of Barnesville. We're trying to clean this place up. How are we going to do that with you hillbilly inbreader's hanging around.

Anonymous said...

And clean up your damn yard.

Anonymous said...

Anon 9:26

Answer: No we cant do the same for the houses, because they dont come with wheels and a tongue.

Hope that answers your question.

Does anyone know where I can buy some of those plastic pink Falmingo Birds?

you can take your ass out of barnesville!!! you are the type of people who want to give everything to the welfare people K-ss my ssa! You are probably one of those people who have half breed children. And you are a panzy ass on top of it. that is why the school system is so full of juvenile delinquents because of people like you. I would rather live in a mobile home and be happy than to live with a bunch of half breeds around.

Anonymous said...

Anon 6:51
You should be more polite to me! After all I'm one of those people who actually work so people like you can have welfare. And you should know that I only made that comment so that these people who say we should do away with mobile home's can hear how they sound. I did'nt know that a real hillbilly half breed was gonna read that and get offended. I'm sorry!

Anonymous said...

anon 10:25
You sure don't know whatthe h-ll you are talking about! I don't think I should be more polite to you or anyone else on this blog for stating my opinion. I also have you know I have never been on welfare and I work just as hard or maybe even harder than you just to help keep your half breed kids in pampers! I don't ask for handouts and I don't give hand outs. I also live in a mobile home and have no problem with people who do. I feel that if you work and pay into society and pay for what you own then NO-ONE should tell you how to live or what to live in! It just depends on the type of person you are as to how you live. Lily livered people who live in glass houses should not cast stones at the people who work and take care of their own. I am not white trash and I don't like having to work to help white trash up. While they lay around and spread their legs for anything that comes along with their pants hanging half way to their knees. I am a hard working white person that has pride in myself and feels that everyone else should have pride in themselves and respect other people.

Trailors SUCK!

Don't knock someone for their choice of home. You should try to understand that this may all they can afford and it is their right to live in it. WE are not all so fortunate as to be born with silver spoons in our mouthes. Don't judge everyone by the same standard, judge a person by their character and the respect that they show their neighbors.
