county shop misuse details emerge...

responding to rumors posted on this blog, county commission chairman jay matthews confirmed thursday that two veteran county employees have been disciplined.
“we handled it in-house. it is a county personnel matter,” the chairman said.
personnel matters are routinely handled confidentially by the county.
the discipline was meted out after a vehicle owned by a child of one employee was twice worked on at the county maintenance facility.
in the first instance, the vehicle was painted after normal working hours. the county employee involved bought all the paint and no county expense other than normal wear on equipment was incurred, matthews said.
in the second instance, the brakes on the vehicle failed and the child involved called the second employee who bought parts but repaired the vehicle on county time in the barn.
“both employees admitted their involvement. this may have happened in the past but it will not happen again. if it does, heads will roll and they are well aware of that,” matthews said.
both incidents occurred in 2007.

Wow - a reasonable politician. You have to like how Matthews addressed the incident without throwing people under the bus for political gain.

I am very sure this type of going ons have happened in the past, so I think the new chairman handle things very well

I think the chairman handled the situation wonderfully even though I still think it is considered absolutely wrong. The 2 employees involved have numerous numerous years with the county and should have known better in the first place. I just wish JM had been the chairman a long time before now maybe other good hard working people would not have been flatten by that political bus.

Just beccause this kind of miususe have happened in the past does not excuse misuse of taxpayers. They should have been fired on the spot and then investigate those that have taken advantage of taxpayers in the past.

they shouldnt be fired on the spot. Come on. They were just dong what they have been allowed to do for ever. He handled it perfectly, mercifully with a 2nd chance since this did not really hurt anyone one or anything, ansd sent the message he needed to send.

Thisis effective leadership. Compassion but firm resolution with clear cut future expectations for these men and all others on the payroll to see. A good leader protects people while demanding their best.

I guess this says alot for the new chairman. The rest of the board must be following his lead now which is good because following the lead of the previous chairman was detrimental to previous employees even when they had been cleared. The only thing they were worried about were their political careers.

Most people would not know effective leadership if it bit them in the butt.
