if a person pulls a gun (or other weapon) on a police officer...
shouldn't that person have a reasonable expectation of being fired upon by the officer?

you pull a gun or any weapon on a police officer , you should get shot,a whole bunch of times
I agree! That includes trying to hit them with a car. People think that a police officer should be able to read minds or know what they are walking into at all times. It is always ok for the criminal to be a criminal until they become the "victim." Then you have all the liberals and civil rights activist comming out of the woodwork. They all need to work as an officer for one day or shut the h*** up
If cops coming barging in a house not in uniform (as in the case with the elderly woman in Atlanta) then they should not be surpised when fired upon. People have the right to protect themselves from intruders.
Cops have the right to serve warrents. She couldnt see the word POLICE written on their shirts, but she could see good enough to shoot 3 officers. You dont get that lucky.....
I guess they should have called first and let the lady know they were comming with a warrant to search her house for drugs. Maybe they should give that courtsey to all. Cops put their lives on the line everyday they go to work. They are underpaid. Do they ever get thanks for the "good" that they do. No, you never hear anything until something goes wrong.
They had shirts on that said POLICE on the front and the back. What else do you need? Anyone see our city and county guys in their swat gear? I would certainly know that they are legit!
Cops are not always the good guys, as plenty around these parts have shown through the years. You find examples of cops everywhere abusing their power everyday.
That being said, there are a lot of good, honest cops out there and they certainly don't deserve to be fired upon but it is understandable the distrust some hold for them.
The bigger question is why it took three armed officers to storm a 90 year old woman's house who didnt have any drugs in the first place. Even if she did, does it take three armed officers to do the job? Sounds like good old fashioned police work right there.
You find all type of people abusing their power, not just cops. Like I said before, walk a day in a cops shoes and im sure you would change your opinion on many things.
They should have known what they were dealing with. I'm no cop, but doesn't good police work involve surveillance? And why not knock on the door? If they had knocked and shown their badges, all of this could have been avoided.
You are correct that lots of different people abuse their powers but the difference with cops is they have legal authority to kill and imprison you and there is not a whole lot you can do about.
If you got pulled over for speeding, you probably were, no reason to say bad things about the policeman. Slow Down and quit being so aggressive with your automoblile.
Not just a police officer, but anyone. If someone crashes through my door unanounced, they can expect to be fired upon with leathal intentions. If anyone pulls a weapon to do bodily harm, other than uniformed law enforcement, someone will be injured or killed. It's all common sense.
Oh im sorry the news report i listened to said they did knock and announce who they were although they didnt have too. I guess the meeting that the neighborhood had with this police a few days earlier concerning drugs and other crime in that area didnt take place either.
How can a cop imprision someone without evidence? Evidence that has to be presented to a Jury...Yeah, they may arrest them but their case has to be backed up.
The purpose of "No Knock" warrant is to have an element of surprise and prevent a sudden surge of water as every toilet in the house flushes evidence down the toilet. The person who need to go to jail here is the idiot who gave the sweet senior citizen a gun. Had she not had one, she would have been alive today and three officers would not have been shot. Book em'
Book'em seems to be the crass attitude of many law enforcement personel. I was recently in the presence of numerous Lamar county officers when applying for a license in which I was treated in a very professional manner. It was also obvious to me that they had a job that I wanted no part of. This profession has a tendency to allow the ego to run a muck to where the courtesy inwhich each law bidding citizen deserves is many times never granted. My personal perception is that many times the desires to catch "Bad Guys" tramples over the rights of all Americans. I think monies and property confiscated in arrest should not go to the arresting law enforcement agency. There is something wrong with that picture when a law enforcement agency is subsidized by what it can take way from it's citizens even if there were laws broken. The money should be used in a manner that gives back to the community in another ways.
Anybody can yell "POLICE" and kick down your door. When you find out who is realy at your door it's too late. This method of entry invites violence by all envolved and should not be a permittable procedure by law enforement agencies no matter how much evidence is flushed.
as for a shirt with "police" on it,or a "badge", you can go to a lot of military surplus type places and buy these items,if i'm sitting in my home and somebody comes crashing thru my door, you WILL DIE

IF its a gun or a weapon. Wallets can look like a gun in the dark.

I don't blame the lady for shooting them. I would shoot too if three men not in uniform with guns came crashing throught my front door.

What if there had been 10 people in there?

The good things dont make good news. Just watch TV. Its all bad.

The above poster was correct when they said there are good cops and bad cops.
Unfortunately for the good ones, it's the meathead/power trip/pulls you over for speeding and acts like Dirty Harry cops that give them a bad name.

I wonder what the precentage of cops killed by criminals is as compared to cops killing criminals.
